My parents are going to Phoenix, Sedona and then going on a road trip for three weeks. They asked me if I wanted anything brought back from the US. Hmmn, any good yarn shops on their route??? Trying to think of things they could (a) find that I (b) can't get here..

You could do a search for LYS in the cities they will be in. I don't know about yarns that you can't get in Ireland. But you could possibly investigate that on the net also and find some yarns that you can't get and give them a list of what to look for.
Good Luck,

This (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37759) thread should be able to help you! It has a yarn store locater.

The difference with LYS here compared to up north is that we have more light and novelty yarns, since we rarely wear winter garments - or for a very short period anyway.

Phoenix is a big city, knowing the area they plan to visit would help alot on picking a LYS. While I never been there, I know some knitters that rave about Hobby Lobby.

The SWTC is local (about one block from where I work!) however they are not open to the public :waah:

I hope they are prepared for warm weather!! :D Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must!

Check on ravelry. I'm sure there is some sort of "Arizona Knitters"
group. I'm sure they would be happy to give you some LYS advice.

That's why they are going in May, we're all fried the minute it goes over 20 centigrade here! They always go to "hot" countries before or after full summer. I'm not sure of their full itinerary, they prefer only booking a few days in advance then planning things when they get there. Knowing my dad though the grand canyon and some form of trains will figure in there somewhere.

I didn't knit when I have visited there- but my dad & brother lived in Phoenix then moved up to Sedona and my little sister went to college in Flagstaff so I am very familiar with the area. My little brother went to Red Rock High in Sedona and is buried there in a cemetary near the Chapel of the Holy Cross. :verysad: (It's beautiful up there and you can see out for miles from the chapel- your parents should go while they're there!) Here is a link: http://www.chapeloftheholycross.com/

ETA- my little sis said the Red Rock Knit Shop is/was on the main drag (89A) in Sedona- they could try there but I don't have any personal experience.

I hope they have a wonderful trip. Maybe they can find some handpainted yarns or something about the landscape that inspires them to choose colors- it's really beautiful and very different.
