I said to my bf 'I want to knit you something.'
He said 'Oh! Could you make me a vest?'
'A vest?' I said, trying to imagine him in a vest; with his torn jeans, old t-shirts, battered shoes and long hair.
'Sure,' he says, 'Somthing I could lounge around in. Simple, but a bit different.'

Have you ever seen a pattern that fits that brief?! i certainly haven't!!

Knitting Pure & Simple has a nice pullover. Interweave knits also has some nice men's vest patterns.

me: 'what sort of colour would you like for this vest?'
him: 'well that sort of knitted olivey greeney, mixed with yellow, kinda mustardy yellow, and bits of purple and grey and things. You know, that sort of odd mix of colours you only see in knitted stuff, that sound horrible but looks realy good.'
Me (whilst rolling my eyes): 'Oh that colour. of course, what else.'

Any ideas as to what colour or type of yarn he is talking about? i have an idea, but any other suggestions would be much apreciated!

The only thing I can think of is actually not one color but a mix of colors and maybe he just doesn't realize that its actually 2 strands (or more) of yarn. Something along the line of the knitpicks swish colors of lemongrass heather and squirrel heather??? But then there's no purple in it . .. lol There's a clematis heather, but I don't know how that would look with lemongrass :?? I have a hat that was made in nepal that is kinda mossy green with all sorts of colors in it and I always wanted to figure out how they made it. Before I knit I thought it was 1 kind of yarn. Now that I do knit I realize that they used a bulky weight mossy green yarn and sari silk yarn. That might be kind of a neat vest for your non-conventional bf :)

Oh - and just to make sure there's no misunderstanding when I mentioned the knitpicks yarns I was just giving color ideas not yarn type ideas. :)

Upon thinking does this look like what he might be talking about?

I still think that using a worsted or bulky yarn with sari silk for a vest (or sweater) is an intriguing idea. Maybe I'll do that :)

There's this one that I'm making for my husband who wanted a casual outdoorsy kind of vest:

I'm making it with Cascade Superwash:

If you scroll down to the 800's on that page there are some heathered colors...(I made a bike-riding sweater out of #865 for my very scruffy 24 year old son who loved the weight/color/washability of it)

I love the vest pattern Sue and the sweater for your son. BTW - he doesn't look so scruffy! You should see my son :roflhard:

i'm with evona on this one Sue, your sons scruffiness has nothing on my BF (is nickname round here is Scruff!).

I was thinking somthing heathery or tweedy too colour wise. hmm, i have a while to figure out this, but it is an interesting challenge!

this is a picture of the bf (on the left) and his brother. He is looking relatively tidy here.
