Hello

Thank you so much to anyone who helps. I'm making socks right now, at the heel flap. I have a couple of questions.

It says to "work 30 heel sts back and forth as follows:

Row 1: (RS) *Sl 1pwise with yarn in back, k1, repeat*
Row 2: (WS) Sl 1 pwise wyf, p29

then repeat those two steps 9 times. (I'm using bigger yarn and needles than the directions, so thats the right number for me.)

Does the 30 quanity include both the slip stitch and the knit stitch or are those seperate?

Also, doesn't it seem that this piece is going to get rather wide rather fast in adding all the slip stitches? Is that right for a heel flap??

This is my first pair of socks, so any help is much appreciated!! Thank you!!

Hi,
I'm new to knitting socks, too, but I know the directions you are questioning: the sl 1 stitch at the beginning of each round is imperative for picking up later when you want to add the gussets, and the 30 stitches includes the slip 1 because if you read it, it says over the next 30 stitches, sl 1, ... so slip 1, k1 for row 1; row 2 is sl 1, p29 so it's slip that first stitch, and p 29, and then redo those rows as many times as you need to get the flap. Now if I could get help on my problem with my heel flap, I will be highly blessed! Hope this helps you. Teddi It won't widen because you are not yarn overing....it's just moving it to the other needle...

Teddi explained it well. Just remember that you're not adding a st, you're just slipping the st - moving the st from the left needle to the right needle without knitting it. I think that you're getting confused because they say 'with yarn in back' and 'with yarn in front'. They're just getting you ready for the next sts. Since you're knitting in the first row (altern. with slipping), your yarn is supposed to be in back. In row 2 you'll be purling, so your yarn is supposed to be in front.

Row 1: Sl 1, K1, repeat across
Row 2: Sl 1, Purl across

It makes a nice strong heel and is easy to do.

But there are several different ones. Use the one you like. :)
