hey so im knitting a glove in the round... i have just finished increasing for the thumb, and put 17 stitches onto a piece of yarn for the thumb, and now i am supposed to cast on 6 stitches before knitting some more... what is the best way to do this?

You can use any of the single-strand cast ons, but I think knitted or cable is best.
One tip is to cast on 2 extras and when you get to them on the next round, work the edge cast-on stitches together with the existing stitches to avoid holes.

i like the simple loop cast on (aka script letter e cast on) but contrary to most cast ons, make them tight! (not loose)
Not excessively tight, but tight.
(no matter, they will still loosen up as you knit into them!)
when its time to work the thumb, pick up the stitches from the loose loops.. you'll get 6 twisted stitches (in the crotch of the thumb where no one will see them) and a tight join of thumb to hand.
(and Ingrid thank for that tip about casting on 8, and decreasing.. that's a great tip!)

Thanks Ingrid and "of troy" .... however im still slightly confused... am i supposed to cast on to the left needle? Because if i do, once i cast them on the first thing i do is to knit them again... is that right? or is there something im missing, like turning it to face away from me and casting onto the "left needle" (the right from the front view) then turning it to face me again and then knitting.... does that make sense?

a simple loop can be cast onto right needle (yarn gets wrapped round your thumb (1/2 of long tail cast on) slip stitch from thumb to needle.
a knit cast on?
Knit to gap.
(last stitch knit is now on left needle, (as is yarn)
use right needle to do a knit cast on
*-Knit into stitch (normally) but don't let it drop off needle!)
take the stitch you just made (on right needle) and slip it onto left needle (1 stitch cast on)
repeat from * 5 more times (or if you follow ingrids advise, 7 more times!)
continue row. (yarn is in last (cast on) stitch on right needle.
(see video's (above) for visuals.)

Cast on to the needle that already has sts on it, you may have to change it to the other hand to do so. If you do, then change it back after you CO and finish the round. Next round, there they are.
