Hello All,
I am a new knitter and I am having difficulties with pattern. Please don't laugh all you experienced knitters.
On the 3rd row I don't have enough stitches to complete the row and end up with 29 sts. Can someone explain what I am missing. Thank you in advance.
Legs (make 2)
Cast on 12 sts. P 1 row.
Next row: k1, [m1, k1] to end. P 1 row.
Next row: k1, m1, k9, [m1, k1] 4 times, k8, m1, k1.
(29 sts)

Maybe you didn't do all of the increases? You initially have 12 sts, on the next row you should be adding 11 sts (by making increases) for a total of 23, and then adding 6 sts (by making increases) for a total of 29. How many stitches are you ending up with?

The m1 increase is between the stitches. Maybe that's where you're going wrong?
I count that you should end up with 29, as well.

Thank you for your response.
When I when I do the the k1,(m1,k1) to end.P1 row I end up with 23 sts.
When I start the k1,m1,k9(m1,k1) 4 times,k8,m1,k1 - I run out of sts. What am I missing? I must be the world's worst interperter of knitting instructions.
I do not have a LYS.

hmmmmmmmmmm . . . when I do this, I have 1 st left over after following the row instructions. Counting that st, I get 29. Actually, I wouldn't worry about it too much. "legs" -- apparently you're making a bear -- or at any rate something with legs. If you are getting less than 29 sts, just add enough to make 29 and keep going. The way you get it probably isn't crucial. Relax. You'll get it worked out.

Let's try this:
Okay, so you do end up with 23 where you're supposed to, but on the next row of increases that's where things go wrong. Soooo. . .
1. You knit 1 stitch, make one, and then knit 9. You should now have 11 stitches on your right needle and 13 on your left needle.
2. Now you knit 1, make one, 4 times. So now on your right needle you should have 19 stitches and 9 on your left one.
3. Now knit 8. You should now have 27 on your right needle and just 1 left on your left one.
4. Make one and knit that last stitch. Now you'll have used up all the stitches on your left and you should have 29 on your right.
Did it work out? Or where DIDN'T it work out?
