Hello my friends! :muah:

As you know, we have been making Oddball Blankets for charity for some time now. I'm working on finishing up a couple of them right now, and they will soon be given to charity. (Oddball Blanket #1 & Oddball Lapghan #1)

We still have four more fullsize blankets and one more lapghan in process. They should be completed in the next few months, and they will also be going to charity.

Since our blankets are almost complete, I have decided to get another one started. This blanket will be made specifically to the size requested by an orphanage in Mexico. I am really looking forward to sending handknit blankets for those children.
 cloud9

Our first Oddball Orphan Blanket has already been started by our wonderful forum leader, Amy. :)

Here's the beginning of our blanket!

She chose a very interesting stitch design. Just lovely!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3154/2637832665_c8127a0e6f.jpg

I am adding another section of knitting right now, and will be ready to send it out to another knitter in August.

Until then, I'll be accepting new knitters that want to join the project. We need 14 more people to help make the blanket. (I already have two knitters signed up - pcrihfield & evona.)

When I get enough knitters signed up to participate, I will put the names in order, set up a blog for our photos, and get the blanket in the mail to the next knitter.

As usual, our blanket is being handknit with washable worsted weight yarn, and will remain on the original circular needles throughout the process. When you receive the blanket, just tie on your yarn and start knitting. :) Each knitter will have TWO WEEKS to knit their section.

Who wants to join in?

Thank you both!

Now, we just need 12 more knitters.

By the way, I will be arranging knitters geographically, so the postage will not be so bad. Let's keep this blanket within the United States, so we don't have to deal with international shipping.

If you have any allergies to pets or tobacco smoke, please let me know, so I can let you be one of the earlier knitters.

What a beautiful stitch! I have enough on my plate right now, but just wanted to say how pretty that stitch is. The oddball blanket idea is awesome. It is like a stone in the pond, it is never the same, and it's effect is wide spread.
Thank you for such a wonderful idea that is helping litterally 100's.

To anyone interested in that stitch I am pretty sure it is the quilted lattice stitch. I just finished using it for the Red Roses baby blanket. Here is a link (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/na_knitting/article/0,,DIY_14141_5419611,00.html) to a pattern. Enjoy!

Shandeh

Thanks Sarah! I usually arrange knitters geographically, so the postage is easier for everyone. When the blanket gets big, it becomes more expensive to mail.

Also, keep in mind that each knitter has the blanket for about two weeks, and there is travel time involved after each knitter, so the project can sometimes take a year. (Sometimes our blanket gets held up in the mail)

If you want to join in, just send me a private message, with your name and address.

Thanks!

I'm okay, because I'm working on the blanket now, and will wash it when it comes back from all its travels.

I sometimes have a problem with cat hair, but I'm not highly allergic so I should be okay; however, I do have problems with smoke/tobacco.

I do have a dog, but she doesn't get on the furniture and doesn't bother my knitting projects, but I thought I should let you know.

I only need to know if people actually smoke inside your house, or around your knitting area.

I've been dragging my feet a bit with our Orphan Blanket, but I'm almost finished! I'm using two different yarns, to make a striped section. Some vintage Caron Wintuk in the color "Baby Yellow", and some Caron Simply Soft Brites in "Mango".

The Oddball Orphan Blanket was posted to New York this morning. Delivery Confirmation #: 0306 2400 0000 8915 6330. I took a photo but my camera's battery was very low, so I am in the process of charging my camera now and will post a photo later today or early tomorrow.

I worked up two sections: one in Caron's Simply Soft Off-White and another section in Caron's Simply Soft Brown. I used my favorite stitch these days, the Farrow Ribbed stitch. The blanket is quite colorful, and will make any recipient very happy.

Thanks for including me in this project, Sandy!

Sandy,
I would love to help out with this blanket!!
Which orphanage in Mexico is it going to? My sister helped out at Casa Hogar in Oaxaca for a week a few years ago.
What colors or kind of yarn is preferred? bright acrylic?

Shandeh
11-01-2008, 08:08 PM
Yay! Thanks for joining, lizardknits! :woohoo:

The orphanage is in Reynosa, Mexico, and is sponsored by Last Days Ministries in Hidalgo, Texas. It is called the "Josiah & Bethany Children's Home", named after two little ones that were lost in a plane crash in 1982, along with their father, Keith Green.

Here's a link that describes the orphanage.
http://www.lastdaysministries.org/Groups/1000023903/Last_Days_Ministries/Orphanage/An_Orphanage_is/An_Orphanage_is.aspx

And here's another link that shows the orphanage today, in 2008:
http://www.lastdaysministries.org/Groups/1000021295/Last_Days_Ministries/Orphanage/Orphanage_Today/Orphanage_Today.aspx

The blanket is knit with any washable worsted weight yarn.

I sent it out on the 13th. and as of last Friday the 21st. it was back in Calif. What I mean is...somehow or another it has made a 360 degree trip. It started with me in Wa. left for LA, was processed in LA and then was sent back to Wa. As of Friday it was back in Calif. being processed in Bell. HOPEFULLY it will arrive to Yvonne on Monday. So much for using Priority Mail. I will continue to keep tracking it and plan to call the 1-800 # on Monday morning. Becky

The conf. numbers are reused. SOMETIMES they have a glich and it's not really where it says it is! If that makes any sense? Hopefully it will make it to it's desintation and/or they will have the right information online later today!

I usually don't get that anxious about our blankets, because something ALWAYS happens to those crazy packages!

But, somehow, they pull through. We've made 5 fullsize blankets and two lapghans. Only ONE of them had to be restarted, because it was lost on the way back from the Netherlands. So, we don't do international shipping of our blankets anymore. ;)

Ok I'm not sure which blanket is which since there a bunch of different threads about oddball blankets (maybe we could close some of the old ones to avoid confusion?) but a couple of days ago I received a lapghan and it was in great condition! :) I will try to post a picture of it when I finish my section as per the requests. :)

Thanks for letting us know you received it, stisdale!

I can't close the other threads, because ALL of those blankets are still being worked on. (I'm finishing up all the large blankets at my house. The baby blankets are being made all over the country by more than 200 knitters. The shawls are being made all the time. The Oddball Pet Snuggles are going strong as well.

So, I don't think any of the Oddball Blanket threads will ever be closed. They are part of our history as Oddball Knitters!

If you want to easily follow our discussion about this particular blanket, just subscribe to the thread. When you are in this discussion, go to the top of the page, and look for the "Thread Tools" button. Click that, then click "Subscribe to this Thread".

Yeah I know the threads like west coast oddball knitters wont be closed, but there was something about Oddball Lapghan #1 finding a home?? How many big Oddball blankets have been done (not including all the baby blankets)? That's what's confusing me, but no worries, I guess I found the right thread!

We've made 5 fullsize Oddball Blankets and 2 other Oddball Lapghans. I'm still finishing up all of them, because they were too large to mail to each other anymore. Postage was getting too high for such heavy packages.

You can see how all our large blankets look on our Oddball Blanket Blog:

Oh that was helpful! Now it all makes sense since it's all in one spot! Man, that's a lot of work for you! Maybe in the future someone can volunteer to finish off some of the blankets along with you so it's not just put on you. Meaning someone else is the "last person" before they send it back to you to be given away, versus you have to do all the finishing touches! And perhaps people could throw in some of their stash along with the blanket so that person has yarn to work with. Anyways, just some ideas. I hate to have all the work put on you!

.........Man, that's a lot of work for you! Maybe in the future someone can volunteer to finish off some of the blankets along with you so it's not just put on you. .........
I don't mind the work. The Oddball charity projects were my idea to begin with, back in February of 2007.

You can read my first post about my idea here:
http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54114

When the first blanket got started, it was like a wildfire in the forum, and everyone wanted to join. That's why we started four more big blankets. Next, we decided to make lapghans for battered women's shelters.

Then, Snowbear suggested that maybe we should make baby blankets, and we got going on those as well. The baby blankets were an even bigger hit, because they were completed so quickly.

My next idea was to make Oddball Shawls, and those are still going strong as well. So far, we've started about 20 shawls, and donated about 8 of them.

Next, I asked if anyone would like to make Oddball Pet Snuggles, and those were successful as well.

It's so cool to see all the different Oddball projects growing!

Good morning all...I just happened on this thread and wanted to see if there is room for one more knitter. I knit on the West Coast Oddball Baby Blankets, but have a soft spot in my heart for the young ones in Mexico. My husband and I (and 2 daughters when they could) spent a week each year at Easter doing a mission trip to different towns in Mexico. My husband ran a dental clinic and I worked with the children. We no longer do the trips, but I would love to still be able to help out if I can. If there is a spot for an extra knitter that is. Just let me know.

In any event, the blankets are amazing and the cause is wonderful...thanks all for doing this.

Morning all. The lapghan arrived safe and sound and I've started working on it. It's so much bigger than the baby blankets. It's kind of nice, because it has been chilly here this weekend, so it is nice to have some extra warmth while I'm working on it. It sure is a pretty blanket. :knitting:

Hey y'all! I have not been keeping up with this thread  so, I have some questions...

I'm the next knitter on the orphan blanket. Does it have a theme? What yarns have y'all used?

Thanks!!!

Hi Nathalie! :waving:

No theme....just knit a section in any washable worsted weight yarn you have in your stash. Any pattern of your choice.

So glad you can work on it! :)

My kids have gotten used to me taking pictures of my knitting projects. They are usually the ones behind the camera while I model my finished projects. The brick on my house makes a pretty backdrop too!

I did start my section tonight and will probably finish tomorrow. I'll try to get an updated picture posted on Friday.

I finished my section today! :happydance:

I used Vanna's Choice (Colonial Blue) and worked the Broken Diagonal Check pattern from the book knit & purl (http://www.amazon.com/Harmony-Guides-Knit-Purl-Stitches/dp/1596680563/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246563452&sr=8-1).

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51a3JcoZ6vL._SS500_.jpg

My section looks small...it was a 14-row pattern...but I think it's about the same size as some of the sections. We didn't want to stretch out the blanket too much at the top so the stitches wouldn't come off the needles.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3568/3682591694_db34def6d3.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3568/3682591694_db34def6d3.jpg)

A close-up of the pattern:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3544/3682591974_9d3dbb1142.jpg

I also wove in the dangling ends from previous knitters. I have heard that this saves the last knitter (or the person who does the border) a ton of time when finishing up!

On it goes to the next knitter!

Hi Becky!

The blanket is here at my house...."on deck"....waiting for me to finish it up. I recently finished our large Oddball Blanket #5, and will be finishing up another big blanket soon. I have 3 other large ones, and the orphan blanket still to finish.

I wish we could have a big get-together at my house so everyone could come and help work on them!

Our blankets are all too big to mail to knitters now. The postage is just too high for packages this large.

I've wondered about this. I work on the pet snuggles, but often wondered how expensive it would be to mail a full size blanket. So, if you don't mail them, how do they get from one place to another??

Shandeh
10-06-2009, 07:56 PM
They WERE mailed....several times, from knitter to knitter.
Blanket #1 - mailed 26 times
Blanket #2 - mailed 20 times
Blanket #3 - mailed 23 times
Blanket #4 - mailed 24 times
Blanket #5 - mailed 25 times
Lapghan #1 - mailed 17 times
Lapghan #2 - mailed 16 times
Orphan Blanket - mailed 21 times
But, now the blankets are so big, that the postage was getting ridiculous. So, now I am knitting more sections to make them long enough, then adding a crochet border.

There will be a final mailout, of course....when they are sent to charities. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford that!

Yay! This morning, I finished knitting the last section of our Oddball Orphan Blanket. Now, it is being washed and dried in my machine, and will soon be in the mail to the Josiah & Bethany Children's Home in Mexico. :cheering: :woohoo: :cheering:

I apologize for the delay in finished it up. I've been dealing with some health issues for the past year. This past month, I decided to just do as much as I can on the pile of large blankets that need to be finished. So far, I've finished two of them, including our orphan blanket! :)

Thank you to all the amazing knitters that participated in this project. You rock! :muah:

I've also cast on another blanket for the orphanage. If you would like to join in on that one, just let me know. Each row will have 200 stitches, and each knitter will knit for about 4 inches. We will need about 15 knitters. Here is the discussion thread to sign up for that blanket: http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1299037#post1299037
