Glad to hear that everyone is so hard at work on our beautiful blankets!

gmmarton, bobi1218 from Ravelry just posted that she received Farm Fresh & Jersey Devil.

Also, suziehomemaker (aka motherhenknits) has jumped in to fill the last empty slot on Jersey Devil. :happydance:

Just posted this on the blog, but thought I'd put it here, too.

There's a crispness in the air here in the Northeast, and that can mean only one thing...fall is arriving and our blankets are on the move. A few of our blankets are sooooo close to completion. Can't wait until the first batch gets delivered.

All slots are currently full, except for one knitter for the green section on Pastel Rainbow. Not to worry, though, our creative knitters are already thinking up new blankets ideas for when they have empty needles.
Here's the update, with new pics, thanks Team!!!

Good Morning!

missyjoon from Ravelry is going to use the needle from Save the Sound (which is thisclose to being finished :woohoo:) to start a Halloween-themed blanket, called Boo! I Love You! She needs at least two more knitters.

Who's interested in some trick-or-treat knitting?

Also, tuxedocat from Ravelry is going to start Think Pink, on her own needle, in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Thanks to missyjoon for the terrific idea and to tuxedocat for running with it! :cheering:

Anyone with lots of pink in their stash?

Remember, each time you deplete your stash, you make room for more yarn. The rule in my house is that two skeins must replace one that is used. It is important for insulation. :teehee:

Spikey - Heathers will be mailed out this weekend. Too much happening at school this week, so I never got out of the building before 5!

It is starting to feel cooler here every night. Do you want me to start Autumn in New England? I've got the perfect yarn, so let me know!

Spikey
09-25-2008, 09:32 AM
No rush on Heather. I STILL can't seem to find a good yarn. I'll have to ask threesmom where she bought that yarn that she sent to tuxedocat.

Let's hold off on Autumn in NE for right now, as we've got quite a few (17!!) worsted weight blankets floating around right now.

I'd love to get a few more preemie blankets going, as we only have eight of them. Any chance that you would be interested or have the right yarn/needle for a preemie blanket?

i'm just copy/pasting my posts from Ravelry as I need to get my butt in gear and go pick up my minions (one of whom will be learning to knit soon, walmart had the straight bamboo needles on clearance for 3 bucks so i picked him up some size 15's and i have some chunky yarn in my stash... figure he can make a bunch of squares or a scarf).... Anyway...

ok… blankets that will be ready to go out on monday:

Preemie:
Rainbow Sherbert (been done for a while… who’s next???)
Tuttii Fruitti

baby:
August

August and Tutti Fruitti both have about an inch to go until they’re done…. so i’ll more than likely have those done tonight….

Nor’easter and Bluebird should be done by the end of next week and then I’ll just have Tiny Dancer to do.

and the second post:
Ok, i’ve been thinking and come up with some more to do once these are done.. and they’re holiday themed….

Turkey Bird (brown and primary colors, think the turkeys made out of handprints that kids do in school)
Cornicopia (browns, harvest colors, etc)

Winter holidays:
Candy Cane (we can have fun with it… think of the different types of candy canes)
Peppermint (red, white, and green)
Winter Solstice (blues, greens, reds, white)
Christmas (red, green, silver, gold, etc)

happy new year (black with bright, neon colors like confetti)

Now, on the holiday themed ones, i think most of them will have to be done for regular baby size. Does anyone know if we can use that red heart yarn that has the metalic thread in it (i think the thread is nylon)? I got some white with gold from someone on freecycle and i'm curious....

I will be casting on this weekend for another Oddball Preemie Baby Blanket for the Northeast that I'm calling Gumdrops. I thought we could work in soft colors like green/yellow/pink/red/off-white...the gumdrops I used to enjoy as a child weren't the dark colors like Spearmint Leaves, so I'm looking for soft, pastel colors. Even a varigated yarn can find its way into this blanket.

If you are interested, please pm me or Spikey and we will add you to the master list. Thanks!

As for holiday blankets, your suggestions are terrific. We do need to be a bit careful about our themes, however, and keep them limited to secular holidays and events, so as not to offend. Thanksgiving-themed blankets may be appropriate, but unfortunately, we should steer clear of any of the religious holidays.

What do folks think of the idea of Piano Man, a black and white blanket? Personally, I have mixed feelings about black in a baby blanket. It might look really cool in the right setting (like Boo! I Love You!), but might be a bit overwhelming in other themes. On the other hand, aren't babies supposed to respond well to those black, white, & red toys? How do you guys feel?

As I mentioned to gmmarton, we have lots (17!!) worsted weight blankets OTN or newly finished:woohoo:, but only 9 preemie blankets. I'd like to get a few more preemie blankets started before we start more worsted weight blankets. They also take fewer knitters.

the high contrast colors of white, black, and red are supposed to help babies develop their eyesight better and i saw quite a bit of it in the playschool type toys at the store.

on the winter solstice and christmas, we could use the same colors, just a different name :)

Let's get some more Preemie blankets on the needles, folks! I'm casting on Gumdrops this weekend, and have two knitters who want to help. Any other takers?

As far as a black and white blanket, I'd rather we not go that route for the Oddball Baby Blankets. There are such gorgeous yarns out there that we can use, so please, let's leave the black and white for some other project.

Does anyone know if we can use that red heart yarn that has the metalic thread in it (i think the thread is nylon)? I got some white with gold from someone on freecycle and i'm curious....

The yarns with the metallic threads in them are a bit too scratchy for babies. We've had them in one or two blankets and those sections are noticeably not as soft as the others.

We should avoid using these yarns, please.

that's why i asked :) Years ago i had been given a sweater set made from pompador baby yarn and ended up having to toss it... but i wasn't sure with the Red heart holiday ones coming out with the thread in them what the deal was.

I still have a LOT of yarn to go through that i have hidden upstairs (going to target later and getting some mroe storage bins... shhhhhhhh.... dont' tell dh!) and sorting the caron simply soft OUT from the red hearts and wool...

tutti fruitti is done, i'll get a pic later :)

Yay! New blankets! And new photos - Awesome!

If there are still spots on Lemon Drop and/or Here Comes the Sun (love that song!), I'd be happy to knit on them.

I also have a skein of really pretty baby yarn someone sent me - I think bobi1218 from ravelry. It's blues, greens, purples, pinks ... I can't think of a name though ... something cool, kind of oceany, maybe sunset or candy-like since it sort of reminds me of cotton candy - the name on the label says "Rock a bye Baby" which doesn't help me much for name ideas. ... I'd love to use the yarn though - the colors are great.

I had an idea for a winter night blanket too - dark blues, blues, silvers or grays, whites.

Any opinions on these??

I would like to make sure that no one is spending more than they feel comfortable to assist with this wonderful project.

Now that we are regional, please know that you can definitely mail the blankets first class, and they will arrive at the next knitter in a timely fashion. Priority mailing is not necessary and is often several dollars more each time, which can really add up.

You can also save on postage if you use an envelope, rather than a box. The whole package needs to be less than 3/4 inch thick, which may be harder to achieve as the blankets grow larger.

I went to Staples and bought a box of large white envelopes, as some of you have received. The envelopes have already paid for themselves in the difference in mailing costs. With the contents in a plastic bag, they seem to survive the trip just fine, but since I'm sending, not receiving, can anyone confirm this? Has anyone gotten a damaged envelope?

Also, I still have lots of the DK/sportweight yarn that CarlyD from
Ravelry donated to us. I've been sending it out with blankets, but if anyone needs any, please let me know and I'll be happy to send out a separate package if I don't have a blanket coming your way soon.

If you do need to send it priority, due to the package size, if you arrange a pick up from home, via http://www.usps.com (http://www.usps.com/), and print out your own label, I believe that the delivery confirmation is free (saves 65 cents each time), and saves the gas for the trip to the post office.

Any other tips for the group would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again to all of you for making this such a success! :grphug:

the blankets arrive just fine when they're in the plastic bags. I actually keep them in there as i transport them in my knitting bag so they stay clean and nice. I ended up going to joanns tonight and bought another size 5 circ (they only had one, AC Moore was out and it only cost me a few bucks as I had one of my coupons from there).

Also, once the blankets get larger, a flat rate envelope might not be too badly priced either. When you go to the PO window, just ask for whichever shipping method is cheapest.

Our experience mailing out orchestra music for my wife's group is that priority mail becomes cheaper than first class when the weight reaches about 1 lb. If it's less, first class will be cheaper! (One thing I don't know is whether you can get delivery confirmation on first class.)

You can sometimes find padded manila envelopes at the dollar store in packs of 2 or 3.

Yayyy!! It should be here tomorrow. Back to the yarn issue... is Red Heart Super Saver OK, or is it too rough? I don't mind getting something else, but I have almost whole skeins of red and royal blue that would be great for this if they would work.

You can get delivery conf on first class. It costs an additional 75 cents, as opposed to 65 cents with priority. But I think deliv conf on priority is free if you print your own label and arrange pick up from home.

The cutoff appears to be right around 13 ounces. If you are under, first class is cheaper, if you are over, they are pretty comparable. It also depends on the overall thickness of the envelope, as it is less expensive if it is less than 3/4" thick.

Hopefully, you'll get I D on Saturday. Unfortunately, RH Super Saver is too rough for our blankets. RH Soft is ok, but not the super saver. I use that to make dish scrubbies. If you want the pattern, to use some of that up, I'd be happy to share it :teehee:.

Shandeh's sticky at the top of the Charity Knitting section has a whole long list of yarns that are acceptable. Hopefully you can find one of these without too much trouble!

Howdy! This is my first oddball so I hope I do what I'm suppposed to do, when I'm supposed to do it!!!!

I'm ordering my yarn today, but not sure "when" to esxpect the blanket, is there a schedule?

I live in Upstate NY, Town of Caroline. Caroline is a very small rural community outside of Ithaca NY (home of Cornell University where my DH works).

I am a nurse and as I have mentioned before, I am also a volunteer Critical Care EMT with our local Ambulance. I spend about 24 hours a week at the fire house covering shifts and get to spend lots of guilt free knitting time between ambulance calls.

The last couple years I have been taking classes to advance my EMT degree but have decided to take a year or so off (to knit:roflhard: ) before continuing my Paramedic Certification.

I look forward to participating in the oddball group!!

Hi GinnyG!

Thanks for letting us get to know you!

There is a list of knitters on each blanket, on our blog (click the link in my signature). I try to keep it updated at least each weekend, and will do so again tonight.

tuxedocat from ravelry is working on Pastel Rainbow right now, and you are next. When she's done, she'll let me know, or post on our ravelry thread. I'll contact you to make sure that you are ready before it gets mailed.

We will always check with you before sending a blanket. Life gets in the way of our knitting some times. If something comes up, just let me know. Changing positions on a blanket, or having to drop out are not a big deal.

In addition to the tips from Shandeh on the sticky, a written instruction sheet will come with each blanket. You can always post here with any questions. Our group is very friendly and very helpful! :grphug:

Thanks for all that you do to help others with your nursing and EMT careers

I got Independence Day in the mail Friday! I have now picked up a skein of Vanna's Choice, so I'm good to get started tonight or tomorrow. I was hoping for something brighter, like a royal blue, but I didn't find anything like that in a softer yarn at Joann's yesterday. However, the Vanna's Choice I got is called "Colonial Blue" so I figured that's better than "Royal Blue" for the "independence Day" blanket anyway.

also, a pic of autumn in the ne
What stitch did you use for this? I haven't decided what to do with Independence Day yet, but that looks a lot like one of the ones I was thinking about. It looks great.. you may have made my decision for me!

:woohoo: our first group-completed preemie blanket! Of course, we have the lovely blanket that mdc550 (http://www.ravelry.com/people/mdc550) crocheted for us, but this is our first oddball blanket.

spinningcrna (http://www.ravelry.com/people/Spinningcrna) knitted the final section, and was kind enough to add the border (which went above and beyond what she had signed up to do!).

I've FINALLY updated the blogs, with new pics and updated progress! :cheering:

It's been a bit hectic around Chez Spikey, with family and work commitments, as I'm sure it has been for all of you! :passedout:

Enough excuses! The fantabulous gmmarton has taken it upon herself to start THREE, count 'em THREE, new worsted weight blankets!

Ladies and gentlemen, start your needles,:knitting::guyknitting: they are open for knitters:

Bubblegum (fun colors)

Imagine a tiny little baby all snuggled under it, wrapped up in all the love that was knitted (and crocheted) into it. What a wonderful thing this is! I'm so glad I can be part of it.

LHFBM is next, but she'll be away 10/17 to 10/19. She was kind enough to inform us so that our little blankets would not sit out in the weather, or be stolen by a critter looking for warmth.

I'm not sure where the links are either, but here is how I do a crocheted shell border:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3051/2809418436_39bd513dac.jpg
Here's how I did the shells.
To start, I did a single crochet border all around the blanket.
Next, At the beginning corner, I chained one, then started the shells:

1) skip one stitch,
2) Do 3 half-double crochets in the next stitch (all in the same stitch)
3) skip one stitch,
4) Do a single crochet in the next stitch.

Repeat steps 1-4 until you get to a corner. Then do 5 half-double crochets in the corner stitch. Then chain one. Then do steps 1-4 again until you get to the next corner.

Do the same thing until you come back to the beginning.
Then slip the first and last stitches together, and weave in the ends.

I know this is not the right way to write a crochet pattern, but it's the only way I know how to describe it. :)

Gorgeous work, MGM! :inlove:

I hope you don't mind if I post it on our Ravelry thread as well, so the Northeast Ravelers can see it.

Not at all! I would do it myself but I still haven't had the time to figure Ravelry out! One of these days!

Once Farm Fresh makes its way back to me, we will have four completed worsted weight blankets: Save the Sound (our CT blanket), Garter Garden, Mermaid Tails. :yay:

My goal is to make our first delivery to the Pediatrics Ward at Bridgeport Hospital the day after Thanksgiving. So far we have three completed (as in with borders) blankets, so I will wash them in non-toxic baby detergent, block (if necessary), and wrap appropriately.

Thanks, everyone, for making this project so special! :yay:

Hi Northeasters! :grphug: Sorry I was MIA, Mr. Spikey & I went on a little last minute (and much-needed) mini-vacation! Thought we'd have more internet availability, but not so much...

Got some great work done on Pumpkin Delight. I can't wait to finish it and show you all the pattern. It is a super blanket. :)

stevedallas, you are next for Pumpkin Delight. Will you be ready for me to send it on Monday? Or maybe even drop it off, seeing as we live pretty near each other?

Also, Boo! I Love You!, Blue Diamond, and Gum Drops went out on Thursday, so if they didn't arrive today, they should arrive Monday. I have the conf #s and will be tracking them.

I received Ocean Waves from pttallbott on Thursday, too.

sent out Farm Fresh and Forest Greens to Sarahbean and Gorgeous Grapes to pttalbott on Rav.

And I'm just about finished with Bubblegum -

Thanks, threesmom! Gorgeous work, as always! :inlove: :cheering:

missyjoon and tenniskid are next for Bubblegum. I'll see if they are ready.

Wow, gmmarton! That is fabulous! Jersey Devil is done, too, and should be arriving at your school soon.

Hey, gang, how about if we do a bit of a push to see how many more worsted weight blankets we can get to gmmarton before Thanksgiving? Of course, we all have holidays to prepare for, and busy lives to lead, but August and Blizzard are almost done.

How great would it be if gmmarton had SEVEN blankets ready for delivery?! In just four months. What an awesome team! :woot:

mdc550 from Rav, who crocheted that lovely preemie blanket for our group, has now joined the ranks of our knitters, too.

She added the blue strip on the worsted weight version of Pastel Rainbow and will be mailing it to gmmarton tomorrow, for the lavender strip and the border. So that makes another blanket that should be ready for the Thanksgiving weekend delivery! :woot::woohoo:

Good afternoon one and all,

I had the privilege of reconnecting this morning with the Child Life Specialist from Bridgeport Hospital's Pediatric Ward to verify that she is ready to receive our Oddball Baby Blankets. Her enthusiasm and delight were contagious! I cannot tell you how excited she was to hear that I plan to bring over our completed Oddball Baby Blankets the Friday after Thanksgiving.

As it stands now, these blankets are complete: Save the Sound, Garter Garden, and Mermaid Tails. I know we have one or two others that are near completion. However, we have a number of worsted weight blankets that were started back in August that seem to have gone Missing in Action! This concerns me, as knitters are holding on to our blankets well past the time suggested for knitting their part.

If you are unable to fulfill your commitment to knit (or crochet) on a baby blanket right now, please don't hold onto the blanket for an extended period of time. Send a pm to Spikey or me so that we can help get the blankets back in circulation.

Let's continue to do our best to get these beautiful blankets out to some truly deserving little ones.

My portion was with Vanna's Choice in Linen, done with Woven Lattice Pattern Stitch, to look like the top of a pumpkin pie.

No problem! Hopefully we can get you Farm Fresh soon, too.

I have a feeling that we'll have to stay up pretty late to hear results, as many polling places are going to have to stay open late to accommodate those who got in line before the polls closed...what an awesome turnout! :woohoo:

Hi Northeasters!

Here are Beautiful Boy and Unnamed (in Bernat Baby Jacquards "I'm A Big Boy" with Garter stitch and Farrow Row Rib [apologies to gmmarton], respectively) and Ocean Waves (in Lion Brand Baby Soft, Light Blue).

Since all I had with me in Boston was that Bernat Baby Jacquard, and a size 6 needle, I started another preemie blanket. It contains blue, green, and white so far, in Farrow Row Rib. Any ideas for a name? We could all do the same stitch with different colors and call it Farrow Row Rib, in honor of gmmarton's favorite stitch. This is the first time I've used it and it is super easy.

Anyone interested?????

All will be mailed out on Monday. Hope everyone is managing to keep their spirits up in this dreary weather. I know it really gets me down sometimes. DH and I went to a local nursery today. Just walking around the greenhouse, where everything was warm and lush, lifted our spirits. We bought some lovely brightly colored tropical plants and succulents, to cheer up the house. I don't normally have a green thumb, but I highly recommend it.

Lovely, Lisa!

Lavender Sachet will be on its way to gmmarton tomorrow! I used Lion Brand Baby Soft in white and my new favorite stitch the Loop Stitch. So quick and easy. Just as fast as garter, but a bit fancier looking.

Of course, after knitting on the Oddball Pet Snuggle (double worsted weight cotton on size 11 needles), this felt like knitting with spiderweb on toothpicks :knitting:

Maybe someone will actually knit with lavender on this blanket someday :teehee:
