I finished Autumn Reds yesterday. Here is a picture of the finished product. It doesn't look like it in the picture but this blanket is pretty much square. I did the border in Chocolate brown, single crochet 5 rows with a crab stitch final row. I think it is really pretty.

Hi all! I just wanted to give you some stats...just to encourage you...

To date, we've completed eight blankets. We still have 12 more out and about. Many of them are nearing completion as well.

We have about 20-22 active knitters in our group. This is actually quite a small number given that we started 20 blankets.

Y'all totally rock!! I know it's busy right now with the holidays fast approaching, so I find it even more incredible that you are still working on them.

Hang tough...we'll be breaking very shortly. Meanwhile, the babies who receive them are going to LOVE how warm they are under all that yarn and love.

Hi all!

Hey, I have a question for you...

Last week, I was talking to Rabbitrescuer (she and I have become good friends ever since this summer when her son was burned). She told me that she knows a gal who works with teens. One of the teens is expecting a baby within the next few months. In the meantime, when she turns 18, her father is going to kick her out of the house since he'll be able to do so legally.

She has nothing...no baby stuff...no maternity stuff.

My heart goes out to this gal.

How would you feel about donating one of our blankets to her? I was thinking maybe one of the blankets that is gender-neutral, such as Disneyland.

I don't know if anyone would be interested in knitting up a hat or something else for the baby. But, since we have these lovely blankets...

Anyhow, I want to get a consensus. No twisting or arms or anything, I promise...

Hi all!

I'm looking for updates on Pacific Blues (I think Pinnut has this) and Neon Rainbow (sepenguins has, I think). I'm also not sure about Little Boy Blue. I think I had someone step in as a pinch knitter, but I forgot to make a note of the change.

Hi all!
I wanted to share a photo of the blanket that pinnut (http://www.ravelry.com/people/pinnut) knit all by herself! She named it Lime Sherbert.

mhansen (Mary) will be working the border.

Thanks so much for taking the initiative! Y’all are so terrific!

Hi all,

I just PMed with Auburnchick and I am really excited about participating for the next set of blankets.

I didn't read every post in the thread, but if there are still suggestions being taken about where to donate blankets to, one I am thinking of here in Boise is the City Light Shelter. In Boise, we don't have enough resources for the homeless, and most of the ones we do have are for men. This shelter helps women and children. I think it would be neat to consider it as a cause.

http://www.boiserm.org/facilities-citylight.asp

If anyone would like me to, I am happy to contact them and ask about what their needs are.

Thank you!

We love new members!!!! I can't wait to plug you into some blanket spots!

We're set on where to donate the worsted and preemie blankets from this round, but perhaps in the 2nd round of blanket-making, we can consider this charity. The blankets are small...ideal for newborns. I can't see them being used for children older than a year or so...unless they used them as snugglies.

What you do is send me a PM when you're done with your section. I'll get in touch with the next knitter to ensure they are ready for the blanket. There have been a couple of instances where I had to find a pinch knitter because life threw a monkey wrench in someone's routine.

Anyhow, the person I PM responds to me to let me know that they are ready, and then I get back with you and provide you with that person's address.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what people are going to use. Generally, you take a look at what's been used and try to coordinate accordingly. But, if others use pastels, you might want to use a pastel. The great thing about these blankets is that things don't have to really match up...hence the name "Oddball."

I would love to CO a new blanket -- I have a pink & brown varigated that I would like to name "Chocolate Covered Cherries" if I might. Or something with teal/turquoise and brown yarns to be named -- "Beach Blanket Baby" (or some other name). Any thoughts?

It will have to wait a few days as I slipped and fell down my front steps Tuesday night -- smacking my left elbow & left ankle and spraining my right ankle. Praising God :yay: I didn't break anything since I was on duty (& will be until this evening), just been very interesting trying to do my duties.

Here's some information, originally posted by Sandy in a KH thread, regarding starting blankets:

STARTING AN ODDBALL BLANKET
If you are the first knitter on an Oddball Baby Blanket, here is what you need to do.

Before you start, purchase some SOFT 100% acrylic yarn.
(Here are some recommended yarns for our project (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1106246&postcount=4).)

If your blanket is a Preemie Blanket, your yarn should be dk/sportweight, and will be cast on with size 5 or 6 circular needles. Cast on between 80 and 100 stitches.

If your blanket is a Regular Baby Blanket, yarn should be worsted weight, and will be cast on with size 7, 8 or 9 circular needles. Cast on between 90 and 110 stitches.

With either blanket, you will need to knit every stitch for the first 3 to 6 rows to make a nice garter stitch border. Then, you can use any design you want, making sure to have 3 knit stitches at the beginning and end of each row. Your knitting in the first section should measure about 4 1/2 inches when you are finished.

The best designs for our blankets are the ones that are reversible, since our blankets will be used by children and babies. Cables, cross-over, or twisted stitches do NOT work well. Ribbing or slip-stitch patterns are also a bad choice, because they tend to draw the blanket inward. The best designs for our baby blankets use simple knit and purl stitch combinations, which make the blanket lay nicely.
(Here are some recommended stitch designs for our blankets (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1106247&postcount=5).)

When you finish knitting your section, do 1 row of all knit stitches on the wrong side, so the next knitter will be able to add their own yarn, and the color change will look nice.
(New colors should always be started on the right side.)

Leave the knitting needles attached, and place the blanket in a ziplock bag with the appropriate Oddball Memo folded up inside the bag with the blanket. (See the attached documents with this post. There is an Oddball Baby Blanket Memo and an Oddball Preemie Blanket Memo.)

You can also include a simple greeting card, and sign your name and list the state you live in, leaving room for the rest of the knitters to do the same.

If you include a card, choose one that is generic and happy. We should not say "Get Well" in the card, because sometimes these children do not get well. :pout: Also, avoid any religious statements, because the children and families at the hospital have many different beliefs. I usually choose a colorful card that is blank inside, and write, "We Care About You" on the inside.

If you have scrapbooking skills, you can MAKE a greeting card!

If you choose to include any gifts for the next knitter, please avoid any food products. Our packages occasionally get lost in the mail. (One time a blanket was lost for 6 months before turning up again!)

When mailing the package, please get DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, so we can track the package online. We don't want to lose our precious knitting!

Hmmmm -- pretty quiet in here!

I thought of another name for the second blanket -- Surf & Sand. I know we have done several blankets in blues, so if no one is interested it's okay!

While knitting at the beach this morning, I was watching the humpback whales surface for air, breach with these huge leaps, and smack their flukes on the water's surface. Wish they had been a bit closer to shore so I could have gotten pictures of them. I immediately tried to think of some way to tie knitting into what I was seeing. The whales are black, grey, and white and the water was in various shades of blue & white capped in some areas. Don't think knitting in black is a great idea for a baby's blanket, but some people like black a lot.

Dimpledapple

Thanks for volunteering! Why don't you tell me your preferences, even though you don't really have any.

I do know that it's been quiet, but that's only because I've been working on new blankets!!

:yay:

Here are the new ones I'm casting on.

Spearmint Twist
Jewel of the Nile
Flower Power
You Are My Sunshine
Fruity Pebbles

I'm only going to knit six rows of garter stitch, just to get them started. I'm hoping that the last knitter won't mind ending with the same six row garter border, just to finish things up neatly before the border is added.
I will need 6 knitters and 1 border person for each blanket.

Auntcrafty is casting on Chocolate Covered Cherries and Surf and Sand. Both blankets need 3 more knitters and 1 border person, unless she's not going to knit an entire section. In that case, we'd need 4 more knitters on each.

So, it looks like we're getting 7 new blankets started! Yay!!! This should keep us busy through the Spring, I think. Especially since we still have a few blankets from the Fall to finish up (and I've sent emails asking about them, so don't worry).

Any volunteers?

Oh, and I'll post pictures of the ones I'm casting on hopefully some time tomorrow.

I do have a concern/question about knitting the six rows of garter stitch at the beginning of the blanket and then sending that yarn around with the blanket until the last knitter can add another six rows in the beginning yarn.

I love knitting on these blankets, but I don't like paying unnecessary postage on a skein of yarn that is not used until the end of the blanket. A skein of yarn does not weigh that much, but sometimes the additional weight makes the blanket too heavy to send First Class, making Priority Mail the only other option. The post office is increasing rates in May, so this will make even more of an impact. The more money I save on postage the more blankets I can work on.

With that said, you can put my name on two of the new blankets (I don't care which ones).

Sorry, Nathalie! I spaced out on the fact you were busy CO blankets and others were waiting to see what they might like to knit on. I'm going to knit a whole section on both blankets, so three more knitters & a border person for each.

Nancy, I understand your concerns about postage costs. I thought of that another time, but realized that the reason the yarn isn't saved and mailed onto the last knitter directly, is there sometimes unexpected pitch-knitters/finishers & it's easier to keep everything together. Sometimes others can use that yarn in the middle of the middle of the blanket, too. Does anyone have any ideas about this to help with keeping the shipping costs down for others?

Sometimes others can use that yarn in the middle of the middle of the blanket, too. Does anyone have any ideas about this to help with keeping the shipping costs down for others?

I love knitting on these blankets, but I don't like paying unnecessary postage on a skein of yarn that is not used until the end of the blanket. A skein of yarn does not weigh that much, but sometimes the additional weight makes the blanket too heavy to send First Class, making Priority Mail the only other option. The post office is increasing rates in May, so this will make even more of an impact. The more money I save on postage the more blankets I can work on.

Valid concerns, and ones that I've already thought of as my own budget is very, very tight right now due to a layoff I experienced at the end of October.

You know...Sandy rarely sent the original skein of yarn along when she cast on blankets. She just let the last knitter use whatever they wanted, adding even more to the "oddball" affect of the blankets.

We could just do it this way, if you want. If someone wants the yarn I originally used, which might just be the case with the Spearmint Twist or the You Are My Sunshine blankets (I used some of the fun yarn that Sandy sent me awhile back), then I can send it along at the end. The other blankets are being started with regular old worsted weight weight yarn, so nobody would probably care about that yarn being included.

Once again, Ladies, I really do appreciate your opinions. We are a group, doing a wonderful thing for others. I'd like to keep us of one mind and not make this become a burden to everyone during tough financial times when every dollar has an impact.

Nancy, I'll put you at the top of a couple of the new blankets I'm casting on.

Ashley, I'll add you to Spearmint Twist.

Penny, thanks for the clarification about your blankets. We'll plan for three more knitters.

When I start getting stressed about money, I just try to remind myself that even with this economy, I'm better off than the vast majority of the people in the world just because I have a roof over my head, electricity, food to eat and running water.

Thanks Kris! I've got you down!

Y'all, I received a HUGE box from nannaknits today. Nanna, thank you for the chocolates!! YUM!

Inside, I also found three completed blankets!!!!!

California Coast

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3396/3248852054_4659ed3140.jpg

Knitters were:

auburnchick
kaniger
sepenguins
Purlingkitten
nostash2big(rav)
knittinmitchie
nannaknits

Here's Strawberry Shortcake:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3329/3248024061_b0525cfbc9.jpg

Those who worked on this were:

nannaknits (started and finished the blanket)
purlingkitten
dimpledapple
pinnut3200
tripletmomma

And this is a blanket that nannaknits (aka Dottie) knit by herself. She didn't name it, so I thought I would call it Goodnight Moon, after the children's book. There was just something about it that reminded me of this fabulous story that I read to my children many, many times...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3097/3248851210_9e17906e4f.jpg

Here's a close-up of the stitch:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3385/3248851574_48937b61d1.jpg

Now, she didn't want to send back empty needles, so she started two blankets...

Snowball

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3109/3248024609_52890d2f0c.jpg

She included two skeins of white I Love This Yarn. We'll do this blanket in all white and let the yarn travel with it, allowing everyone to use the same yarn (oops...I cut off the tail end before realizing that the yarn would travel). Oh well.

And here's another blanket...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3493/3248850530_efb2387fcd.jpg

She used Vanna's Choice for the blanket above. It's greener than the picture shows.

My son thinks it looks like kiwi, so let's call this one Kiwi Surprise.

Ok, folks, here's a breakdown...

To date, we've completed 18 blankets. Six of these are preemie blankets.

I promise...I'll get these washed up and packaged very, very soon. I'm job hunting, subbing, and soccering, so my schedule has been hectic. But, I want to get these sent off to the gals who will be delivering them to the hospitals where we're donating them.

Now, with the newest blanket cast ons, we'll have 10 new blankets started. With the other four outstanding from the last batch, that's 14 more! Can you believe it?!! Wowsa!

:passedout:

Here's a list of the newest blankets and slots open:

WE HAVE THE BEST GROUP EVER!!!!!

:teehee:

Ok...I'm super busy today, and I'm subbing all week at school at the Attendance desk, which means a bit less computer time for me.

I'm going to try to get an updated list of blankets/knitters posted by tomorrow. No promises, but as soon as I can.

A quick run-down on blankets that still need knitters...

Chocolate Covered Cherries - 2 knitters and a border gal
Fruity Pebbles - 1 knitter and someone to do the border
You Are My Sunshine - 1 knitter

Wow! That's it, folks! I can't believe it!

I'll try to do some rearranging so that people don't get a bunch of blankets all at once. I know how that works out sometimes.

I was also considering possibly rearranging according to geographic location. Would this make it cheaper to mail?

Thoughts?

I'll try to get the blog updated this week too. I haven't added the newest blankets yet.

Ok...off to cook dinner, make sure my son is doing homework and chores...and do whatever else that busy moms have to do.

Calgon...take me away...

Hi all!

I just went through and rearranged the order of knitters for each blanket. I figured out a way to add locations to Google Earth and look at your locations that way. Pretty cool! Hopefully, we’ll be able to save some postage this way.

Before I post the updated lists, please remember that we need to get on the ball and decide if we want to select new places to donate the blankets. We’ve got two different knitters who will be delivering blankets as soon as I can get them in the mail to them (debkcs and grannydani). I expect that when they make the donations, they will post updates. I’ll give you updates as to when I get the boxes sent. Work has been busy, so I still haven’t had time to wash them.

I’d like for the next round of blankets to get mailed directly to whoever will actually be delivering them to our designated recipients…saving on the cost of extra postage.

Here's some info posted by grannydani (Danielle) over on our thread on Ravelry:

Nathalie asked me to post something about the hospital I work at - which is going to recieve some of the blankets. We are a community hospital in northern California with a Level II Nursery - that means we do not keep ventilated babies or babies who require surgery. They go to a Level III nursery, as do micro preemies. We are now affiliated with UCSF. We have been undergoing a renovation of our Nursery since OCtober - and in that time have been stuffed in a tiny two bed room, with another over flow nursery which we have had to use often since January. The finishing touches are going on in the new nursery and we are anxious to be able to spread out again - the final inspectors come at the end of the month. The weblink to our hospital is www.valleycare.com. We have 120+ deliveries per month - and our nursery census can run from zero to 8 - and that can happen in one 24 hour period! LOL

We use to have several groups that made blankets for the babies that ended up staying in the nursery (the well babies typically stay in the rooms with the moms) but they tend to fall away periodically. The families love the blankets they get - they are so touched that people they dont even know care about their babies! It is a source of comfort to them when they are living thru the tough times of leaving their sick babies in the nursery when the moms are wellenough to go home.

Hi y'all!

I wanted to let you know that I've been talking to sepenguins, and she's been working on several blankets. Pretty in Pink is finished. I'm hoping we can get a picture of it soon. She's also got her section of Pumpkin Pie complete and is working on Little Boy Blue. Both will be traveling to purlingkitten after, although I told her to wait until she's finished with Neon Rainbow, which will also go to purlingkitten. Hope you're ready for the blankets!!!

Good news, though...our blankets continue to travel!! Woo Hoo! :woohoo:

Pinnut made a blanket all on her own! This one is called Crayon Box. You can read more information about the blanket on Nancy’s blog (http://wyomingbreezes.blogspot.com/2009/02/crayon-box.html).

Marria will be working the border.

What a generous group y’all are. I am constantly amazed and inspired by each and every one of you.

Crayon Box arrived in the mail today. It's gorgeous, Nancy! And thank you so much for the generous gifts. The lace yarn is absolutely yummy. You're such a sweetheart!

I am going to run up to Joann to get some yarn because I'm not happy with how any of my stash looks with it. So I will try to have it ready to go by the end of the week.

Another blanket will soon be cast on.

Sepenguins is finishing up a couple more blankets and will be casting on a new one with a set of empty needles.

In her words...

I was thinking I could start a blanket with the “Bee” stitch because Utah is nicknamed the Beehive state. We could use the same stitch throughout the blanket with bee-like colors.

We'll need five more knitters and someone to work the border.

One spot might be taken by a possible new member of the group. I was contacted by someone yesterday who is interested in the project, so I'd like to leave a slot open for her in case she joins us.

Other than that, feel free to sign up!

Oh, and we need a name. Someone has got to be more creative than me! Throw some ideas out there!!

Ok all...decision time about something.

I've been corresponding with one of our knitters. We were originally going to donate the preemie blankets to her local hospital, but she just told me that, aside from burial clothing sets for the little ones, they are set because of the generous donations that her community makes.

So, we need to decide what to do with these nine blankets.

She suggested that I donate them locally, but I do not want to slight our region in any way.

My intention, with the blankets that are completed from here on out, is to have them sent to one or two of y'all...whoever lives closest to the place(s) we decide to donate them to.

I do not have a problem sending the boxes I have. I'm going to send the worsted blankets to the hospital where grannydani works. That leaves the box of preemie blankets with a yet-to-be-decided charity.

I want to do what the group wants. That's your area of the U.S.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Personally, I recommend that the blankets be given to a hospital that treats newborns & preemies from many states in our region. I know that Denver, Colorado has two/three hospitals that treat at risk babies/preemies from Wyoming and I am sure that other surrounding states send babies there, too.

That’s my two cents.

I just wanted to say hi! My name is Bailey, I live in Meridian Idaho and have just joined your group. I think I'll be working on the bee theme blanket and I was thinking 'Bee-lieve' (believe) would be a cute name....but it's just a thought. I liked it because it's a good message for a new baby!

Looking forward to this project and getting to 'know' you all!

Following the lines of California Coast and the yet to be named 'bee' blanket honoring the state of Utah, I think it would be great to do an Idaho blanket. Boise is referred to as The City of Tress, and actually the word Boise comes from Les Bois - a French term meaning 'the trees'. I was thinking either a green color scheme or Fall tree colors scheme and name it Les Bois. Who wants to jump on board? Anybody have ideas to honor other states in our group?

Thanks,

bailchri

I'm so excited about these blankets and the ideas just keep coming to me so I want to share them and get opinions. I think doing a blanket honoring each state in our group would be fun!

http://www.50states.com/flag/coflag.htm
in case the image doesn't show up for you follow the link to see flag:
http://www.50states.com/flag/coflag.htm (but if you go to this website, the color of the flag is off - the blue and red are suppose to be shades like the US flag.

Colorado's state flag has a good color scheme for a blanket, don't you think? Anyone from Colorado have other ideas?

Ok all...

We need four more knitters and a border gal for Busy Baby Bee...the blanket that will be done in the bee stitch.

Takers?

I made a vest using the Bee Stitch. I think that is a good stitch for the blanket. I would like to be on this blanket if possible. I could do the sixth section and the border if needed. Nanna

Posted on Ravelry from nostash2big:

I’m from Colorado. I think the CO flag has some good colors for a blanket. We could also do greens for the forests, purples for the mountains, different “wildflower” colors, shades of brown for the plains.

Anyone wanna suggest a name?

Hi all!

One of our knitters dropped out of the group (not one of the Ravelry or KH knitters), so I have a couple of openings on blankets:

Kiwi Surprise
Fruity Pebbles

If you would like to be added to either or both of these blankets, please let me know.

Thanks!

They are both beautiful! I love Surf and Sand so far.

I'm worried because I don't know if I'll be doing any fancy stuff on the blankets I do - what are some easy 'patterns' you can suggest (preferably with online pictures/instructions). All I've done so far is stockinette or only purl or only knit.

You can do garter stitch if you want. It is okay. Knittingonthenet.com has some stitch patterns with pictures. Also there is a sticky at the top of the page on the charity page that has stitch patterns for the blankets. Just don't do ribs, cables, slip stitch patterns because they tend to pull the sides of the blanket in.

You can go to this (http://knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59164) page on KnittingHelp for various pattern links.

I would stick with simple patterns. The easiest patterns are often the loveliest.

We're thrilled with each member who participates. Skill levels are not compared here.

Is Neon Rainbow on the move? I've been saving the purple yarn for this blanket, and it is tempting me to use it for something else.

Is there any news?

I guess I'm going to be working on Fruity Pebbles, I was just wondering if the 'lineup' is posted somewhere so I can anticipate my turn, etc? I saw one picture (the first section) on the blog - it looks like fun! Also, not sure if I'm working on Busy Bee also, but same question - is there a 'lineup' posted somewhere. Maybe these aren't posted, or maybe I missed them.

Thanks!

I'm usually better about keeping the blog updated, but I've been slacking lately. By the time I get home from work, I'm beat.

I'll try to get it updated tomorrow.

The right side of the blog has a list of blankets and the order of knitters.

In fact, it might have a list right now, but I need to update it to reflect the changes in the line-up...when I changed it up a bit to be more geographically efficient.

Hi all!

I'd like to try to set an ambitious goal for the group.

Postage will be going up on May 11th.

I think it would be great if we could see how many blankets we can get finished before the change. We're all watching our money closely, and a few cents per pound really do add up.

In addition to saving money, this will give us an earlier start to our summer break. We took a bit of a break during Christmas, and I believe we'll need another one during the summer. Many people travel or have children return from college.

Anyhow, take it for what it is…a goal. If we don’t reach it, no biggie. It will be fun, though, to see how many we’ll get done.
