Hi all!

Pinnut made another blanket. Here's a picture of Arctic Ice:

I've sent a PM to someone about adding a border.

Hi all!

I have not been able to reach one of our new knitters, who's on the list for You Are My Sunshine. I've decided to skip her and go to the next knitter (already sent nostash2big a PM).

But, this leaves me one knitter short.

Would anyone like to volunteer to work on this blanket?

I'm still not quite sure how many I've been assigned to (I believe it's 2). If you only have me down for 1, you can sign me up for this one. If I'm already assigned to 2, then someone else can have a turn!

Three blankets are on the move to the next knitters -- sorry to take so long!!!!

Fruity Pebbles is on it's way to Becky:
03081400000232696684

I was rushing to get this in the mail with the other two and forgot to take pictures. Becky would it be possible for you take some before & after you do your section?

The yarn I used was Bernat in Pink Lemonade using the ZigZag Moss stitch -- after all children are bouncing off the walls after they eat Fruity Pebbles.

Snowball is in route to wsnels:
03071790000080360332

52181

I did a Checkerboard pattern because it reminded me of the forts I used to make when we had snowball fights.

Chocolate Covered Cherries is going to nannaknits:
03081400000232696677

52183

Used TLC Baby in Neopalitan to make the Seed Stitch Checks pattern -- reminded me of the shape of the tray the candy sits in the box.

Hi you guys!

I found a hospital to donate our preemie blankets to. Yeah, I know…I’ve been slacking. I apologize.

Anyhow, we’re going to give our blankets to The Children’s Hospital. It’s located in Aurora, CO.

nostash2big (http://www.ravelry.com/people/nostash2big) will be delivering the blankets to her local yarn store. The store collects the blankets for the hospital and makes the deliveries.

I spoke with a gal in the Volunteer office yesterday, and asked me to pass along the hospital’s thanks for our work.

You can visit the hospital’s web site here (http://www.thechildrenshospital.org/). They do amazing work!!!

bailchri
purlingkitten (http://www.ravelry.com/people/purlingkitten)
nannaknits (6th section and border)

I haven’t been able to get a hold of bailchri yet, although I think she’ll respond to my KH PM’s soon. She’s one of our newest members. I’ve got another new knitter I can email, but right now, we still have two open slots.

Any takers?

Sepenguins asked if we should do the blanket in all yellow or alternate yellow and black.

What do y'all think?

Since Snowball came with yarn, I decided to start on it first.
Since I'm a new knitter and have 2 blankets in my possession, I decided to just do simple garter stitch in an effort to keep the blankets moving. I finished my section last night (the same day it arrived) and am quite proud because I was thinking it would take a long time. Of course I'd be the one who had to start the new yarn, hopefully I did that right!

Here's a picture of Snowball with my section added:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36933509@N04/3402241578/

Here's Fruity Pebbles when I received it (I don't think there were previous pictures, sorry if this is a repeat):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36933509@N04/3402246718/

I hope that you can see the images, I'm trying out inserting them from Flickr and they show up as ? for me, but if not, try the links!

Hopefully I'll get to the store today and get some yarn so I can work on this one and get it moving!

Thanks!

Hopefully someone can help me find my answer quickly:

When I'm trying to figure out what stitch to use for my section and I'm looking at the "Recommended Stitch Designs for Oddball Baby Blankets" section how do I count how many stitches I'm working with? There are 85 on this particular blanket, but 6 are the knitted border, so is that 79 for the pattern? Not many work for this number - does that matter? For example, Checks and Ridges is multiple of 4 +2 which would get me only 78. I hope this makes sense, I want to try something other than garter stitch but don't want anything too complicated.

Thanks so much!

Yes, you will be working with 79 stitches for the pattern. I think the "Recommended Stitch Designs" post accounts for the 6 border stitches, so if it says 100 stitches, that means the pattern is to be worked in 94 stitches. When you click on the link the page it takes you to will tell you that the pattern is worked in multiples of x stiches.

I think for the number of stitches you have you could do Double Basketweave (multiple of 4 +3) or if you want something simpler, then you could do moss stitch.

Hope that helps!

AN-Y-WAAAYS... I finished my section of Chocolate Covered Cherries (I hope I did everything right... :aww: ) and I will try to send it out tomorrow, if not definitely by Wednesday.

Here's Chocolate Covered Cherries now with a close-up as well. It was sooo strange, the pattern that comes out in the pictures of the first section does NOT appear that way in real life. I can't even see the pattern like that when I look at it... STRANGE. It's like an optical illusion or something.

Also, depending on the pattern you can always just cut off the pattern midway. In example, with a diamond pattern you should complete the diamond ideally, but if the number of stitches would leave you with 3/4 of a diamond, just do that! :) That's what I would do anyways. It's going to be hard to find patterns that can always coincide with the number of stitches you have.

Ooh! :cheering: I'm soo excited about receiving Fruity Pebbles, I love this Oddball Knitting thing! You get to receive packages in the mail (always exciting) and you don't have to pay for it (even better) and you get to knit (woo hoo)! It's all so fantastic. cloud9

The blanket is beautiful! It's also strange how differently the colors show in pictures (will all of the blankets).

Oh, and I agree, receiving packages that you didn't purchase is amazing fun.

:o)

Has the Busy Bee (I think that's the right name) blanket been started? I'm working on practicing the bee stitch and found these instructions (http://www.knittingknonsense.com/beestitchcloth.html):
1: Knit
2: k1, *k1 in st below, k1; repeat from * across
3: Knit
4: k2, k1 in st below, *k1, k1 in st below; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2
Repeat these 4 rows.

Does that seem correct? I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before my turn comes for this fun blanket!

Thanks!

Working on these blankets can be very addicting!!!

I just put your name down for Busy Baby Bee.

I don't know if now is a good time to suggest new blanket ideas, but it seems like quite a few of our blankets should be wrapped up soon. I had an idea and wanted to get your guys' thoughts on it.

I know that we have already done some monochromatic themed blankets, but I was wondering if we could do a blanket of all shades of yellow or green.

FYI to Auburnchick: Could you add "California Coast", "Creamsicle", to the list of completed blankets on the blog? And could you please add "Busy Baby Bee" and other blankets in progress on to the blog too? Thank you so much! :) I just want to see wherever I can sign up for new blankets!

Just curious, what's the status of Strawberry Shortcake?

Another idea would be a jewel toned blanket of all the different colors. Similar to Jewel of the Nile (which I love by the way).

yeah.. I'm really getting into this! :P

Hi Sarah! I love the enthusiasm!

First, thanks for catching my lapse on the two blankets I left off of the list. I added them.

I also added Busy Baby Bee. You are on the list of knitters. We need one more person.

Strawberry Shortcake was completed. I added it to the "Completed" list as well.

As far as your idea, I think we have done this kind of theme before (Pretty in Pink was one). We could certainly do another.

One thing I do want to say, though, is that I think we're trying to finish up the current round of blankets. I think we're all going to be ready for a break (except for those of you who recently joined our efforts).

Maybe there could be some brainstorming, and we could compile a list for when we get back started in late August/early September (roughly following the school calendar).

What does everyone think?

Sorry for the delay, Surf and Sand arrived on Saturday along with all the mail that we had held at the post office while we were on vacation. It is so pretty, I love all the different colors and stitch patterns.

Tania; Thanks for the lip balm and note cards. I was just running out of cards and was going to have to buy some...great timing.

Nathalie; I hate to think of taking a break from knitting on these fun projects (I'm one of the fairly new ones), but have no problem with it. Thanks for all you do...you are a great coordinator.  :woohoo:

YAY! :woohoo: I am so disappointed that I will have to delay working on it as I a) have a big assignment that I must finish for school by tomorrow, and b) am almost done with a baby blanket that I have been working on for MONTHS! Thank you so much bailchri for the chocolate (it lasted all of a minute) and recipes and scoop! :muah: All so handy and awesome!!

Chocolate Covered Cherries is on its way to Janet in Seattle, Confirmation number: 0307 1790 0002 2129 5387

Quick question, has anyone ever had to pay more than $5.60 for shipping with confirmation for your blanket? I don't know that distance even really makes a difference the way the system works... just wondering... hmmm. :??

Also, I was wondering too if there was *ANY* way that we could continue blankets into the summer. I totally understand auburnchick how some want to take a break, and I would even be willing to take on some of the coordinating responsibilities if you too wanted to take a break, but I know that there are a few newbies like myself who are so eager to keep on knitting and I hate to think I have to wait until the fall to get another blanket. :(

Depending on where it is sent and in what type of packaging determines the amount of postage. I sent my last blanket to Calif. from Wa. in a padded envelope and I do believe with confirmation costs it was about $4.60. I have also sent larger blankets in priority boxes that now cost over $11.00 to send anywhere in the country. I hope this helps. Becky

The postage varies, depending on how far your package is traveling, along with the weight, of course. I buy and print my postage from usps.com, which offers a small discount. Every little bit counts.

I do not have a problem with everyone mailing their packages first class...to save money.

Times are tough right now, so any way we can save money will help everyone.

As far as the summer blankets, I have a couple of suggestions:

1) If a couple of you want to work jointly on a blanket or two, then by all means feel free to do so. You can keep me in the loop by sending me the name of the blanket so I can add it to the running list.

2) You could hop over to the Northeast Oddball project and see if they need help. Their group is much larger than our's, and I know they are continuing work through the summer.

Our group is so small that most knitters are almost constantly working on blankets...hence the need for a break. Many of us use the summer to catch up on personal knitting projects. Plus, with travel, it makes it hard to coordinate the blankets.

Hope this helps...

Attention West Coast Oddball Knitters:

I am coordinator of the Northeast Oddball worsted weight baby blankets. Two days ago I mentioned to my Northeast Oddballers that I have some DK/sport weight acrylic yarn ideal for preemie baby blankets that I’d like to donate to anyone in our group who can use it. This is part of my destashing project, and I'm anxious to help find my DK/sportweight yarn a good home.

So far, no one in the Northeast group has taken me up on my offer, so I thought I would offer my DK/sport yarn to anyone in the West Coast Oddball group (coordinated by my dear Virtual friend, Auburnchick). If I don't get any "takers," I will put my offer on Yarncycle tomorrow.

If interested, please send me a PM and I will mail the box out to you early in the week.

Many thanks!

Hi all!

Since some of you are new, I thought I would tell you that there is a thread on the Charity forum that lists suggested yarns for our projects.

Shandeh recently updated the list with another yarn she discovered. Here's the PM she sent me regarding this:

Just wanted to let you know that I added a new yarn to the list of recommended yarns for regular baby blankets.

http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/sh...46&postcount=4 (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1106246&postcount=4)

The yarn I added is Red Heart Kids. I had never used it before until recently, and was VERY pleased with how soft it felt, and how well it knit up. Now, I'm looking for it to be on sale! I really love to knit with it.

It should work perfectly for the regular worsted weight oddball baby blankets.

So I have a question, why does everyone include a little swatch of yarn after they finish off their section? I did too but I didn't know why! Also, why is there a little section at the beginning of some blankets? In example, on fruity pebbles, in the beginning there's that little section of multi-colored yarn. What is that for?

I was just curious

auburnchick
04-14-2009, 01:06 AM
There's a little bit of yarn left over from the last section so that you can tie on your yarn for your section. Ideally, each knitter will weave in the ends of the start of their section so that the border person doesn't have to go back and do all of that.

Some blankets were started by me. I didn't want to take the place of a knitter, so I only knit a small section...just to get the blankets started. It was my thought that we could incorporate some of that yarn into the blankets (I think I sent those yarns along). Most people have used their own, though.

Over 2 lbs they will go by weight and distance. Also, they have small roughly VHS sized boxes that you can get for free too that are flat rate of $4.95 IF you can cram a blanket in there. Morning all...I arrived home after being gone over the weekend to find Lolipop in my mailbox...what a cheerful blanket it is. I can't wait to get started :knitting: . Tania thanks for the note and the candy. I love the little tin with the apple mints. The tin will come in handy to hold stitch markers and such when the mints are gone. Nannaknits, the blankets look great!! It's so exciting to see the finished product on some blankets that I helped work on!! :) I really like the Fruity Pebbles border, you're inspiring me to get better at making borders! Would you be willing to share your secret? :teehee: I know how to crochet a basic border, but I don't know how many stitches to pick up per row or line of knitting... advice?

Also, thanks pinnut for starting a new blanket!! I would love to be on the list, if possible, put me a little towards the bottom because I have the lapghan and Summer Sky with me right now and I have finals coming up, so it would be better to get it a little bit later!

Crocheting is much like knitting. Both use patterns that take a multiple of stitches. I have a book by Jean Leinhauser for Leisure Arts, 50 Crocheted Afghan Borders. I use parts of these patterns because some of them are too big, or too lacy. I try to make the border appropriate for the baby. Girl colors I make a little more lacy than the boy or Unisex colors. You can make a nice plain border that is just double crochet then on the last round do the Crab stitch which is a single crochet backwards (left to right) It looks nice and is a good generic design. On the preemie blankets or the blankets that use the baby yarns I use a size F hook. On the bigger blankets or the ones in worsted weight I use a G or H. Most of the time I just pick up on the cast on and bind off edge three stitches skipping the fourth stitch. On the sides I pick up between the garter stitch ridges. (in the valley between the ridges) A lot of the time you just have to play it by ear and make adjustments where needed. Sometimes I have had to fudge a stitch here or there because I need one more or one less. Crocheting is forgiving and finding that wonky stitch will be hard for others to see. I hope this helps. If you need more info feel free to PM me. Nanna

Thank you sooo much Nannaknits! I will have to try it again on my next blanket and see how it goes. If i really get the hang of it, maybe the West Coast Oddball knitters will have one more border person! I've only tried to do the ruffle borders so far, and those have gone well. And like you said, I've had to kind of adjust it as I go along to make sure that it's as "ruffle-y" as I want it to be. Your information really helps though!! Thanks!

A heads-up that Busy Baby Bee is getting ready to hit the road.

Sepenguins posted the following information on Ravelry:

I finished Busy Bee last night and it is ready for the next knitter. I decided to put 1/2” (4 rows) of garter stitch after 3” of the pattern stitch, 1/2” at the beginning of garter stitch. I did this so that if someone has a mistake they don’t frog down into another persons section. Trust me, I had a couple mistakes and it was hard because of the stitch pattern to correct them. I would suggest that everybody knit 3 1/2” of the stitch pattern and then 1/2” of garter stitch. If you are confused about what I mean, just let me know.
I also started another blanket that I am going to knit entirely by myself. It will be in shades of pink and purple and I am calling it Fairy Princess.

I have the following people set to work on it:

sepenguins (cast on and first section)
stisdale
bailchri
purlingkitten
wsnels
nannaknits (6th section and border)

Hi all!

It's been a while since anyone posted an updates. I wanted to check in and see how y'all have been doing.

I still have the three blankets I'm doing the borders on. One is finished, got too hot & sticky during two weeks of voggy & humid weather -- even with the a/c! Then I had to move last weekend. Where I am gets lovely tradewinds so I'm on task to finish the last two blankets.

Just wanted to share with you all about a dream I had last night. I received an unexpected (didn't know I had signed up for this one) Oddball Baby Blanket in the mail. When I opened up the rather large envelope I found a HUGE 'baby' blanket. It appeared that it started as a patchwork quilt and then the person before me had started knitting their section and I was continuing with the knitting. It definitely was NOT the best looking blanket I've ever seen so I don't think we should try it anytime soon! LOL

Any new photos?

No new photos, but it has been rather quiet, hasn’t it?

Let’s see…here’s what my spreadsheet shows. Please correct me if I’m wrong on something.

Crayon Box - Marria (http://www.ravelry.com/people/marrian) was supposed to do the border. She’s had some personal issues, but I thought she said she was mailing this out. Nostash2big (http://www.ravelry.com/people/nostash2big), do you know if you ever received it?

Jewel of the Nile and Snowball - Kaniger (http://www.ravelry.com/people/kaniger) is supposed to be finishing them up. Can you give us a status?

Summer Sky is set to travel soon. We have one more section and then the border!

Lemon Drop - AshleyP (http://www.ravelry.com/people/AshleyP) was supposed to mail it to wsnels (http://www.ravelry.com/people/wsnels). Did you ever receive it? My records don’t show an updated status.

Fruity Pebbles - I think nostash2big (http://www.ravelry.com/people/nostash2big) received this, but I want to double-check. The last person to have it was nannaknits (http://www.ravelry.com/people/nannaknits).

Busy Baby Bee - will be traveling to wsnels (http://www.ravelry.com/people/wsnels) soon. It’s moving right along…almost halfway there.

Spearmint Twist - stuck in limbo with knittinmitchie (http://www.ravelry.com/people/KnittinMitchie). Status??

Regarding the bee stitch for "busy baby bee" - this is my first time knitting in the stitch below and it doesn't seem to be coming out right - it just looks pretty much like garter stitch. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I've looked at the video on this site and still feel like I'm following directions - help!

stisdale
06-19-2009, 01:13 AM
I posted this on the other thread, but I thought this website was the most helpful http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2008/12/knitting-into-stitch-below.html . Basically instead of knitting into the loop on the needle, look at the loop right below it, put the needle through that loop, and knit like you normally would, but through this bottom loop. When you pull it onto your right needle, the top loop that you didn't knit will unravel off the bottom one and a "bar" will now sit on top and behind the loop you now have on the right needle, creating a little upside down v. :) OH and by the way, since there are 100 stitches on the needle, it is not an odd number like the pattern requests you to have, you just have to adjust for that too, just you won't be creating a mock rib brioche pattern instead of the bee stitch. :) I hope that helps!!

Thanks, Nancy, for letting the cat out of the bag. If y'all need someone to walk you through fixing a doorbell or an oven, I'm your gal.

Hey, I didn't let the cat out of the bag. You did that by posting your tutorial on "How to fix an oven."

I have some projects that you could work on, too, like bathroom tile repair, caulking around the tub, bathroom sink stopper repair, etc. What do you say? Do I see a "working vacation" to Wyoming in your future? :teehee:

Yeah, I know I blogged, but I figured that my two or three faithful readers were the only people who would see it! :teehee:

As far as tile and sheetrock...I've never done either one of those kinds of projects. I have caulked though. In fact, I really need to do it again, but it's a messy job!

Tell you what...you pay my travel expenses, and I'll gladly fly up and help you.

Lily of the Valley is finished. This preemie blanket and its pattern turned a lot of heads when I knitted on it in public. Frequently, people asked if they could look closer at the blanket and have a copy of the pattern.

In order to clear a spot in my craft room, I am gradually working my way through my acrylic stash.

Berry Parfait was finished yesterday. You can read more about it on my blog (http://wyomingbreezes.blogspot.com/).

Ladies, I am in need of a pinch-knitter for Busy Baby Bee.

Anyone game?

I know Busy Bee is based on a stitch pattern...if someone can post a link to directions on how to do it, I'm happy to pinch hit (as long as it is not a particularly hard stitch) I think I remember seeing some info on it in this thread, but I'm too lazy  to go back page by page and look for it.

I took a photo of Busy Baby Bee after my section - here's a pic that might satisfy your needs for photos! I agree, we need to see more!

I wasn't too impressed with the selection of colors that met the criteria for this blanket that either of our craft stores had (mine is the top - a little too orange-y for my tastes, but oh well). We're getting a hobby lobby here soon, do they have yarn (I'm hoping)? Hopefully then I'll have more to choose from!
