I started making them in search of a way to have needles to teach some of my students to knit. They are made with smooth dowels. If I have the students make the needles, they are more likely to stick with the learning process. I will write a how-to and send it to you in a few days along with a pair for you to try out.

. . . I was afraid to send chocolate now that it is getting to be true Texas weather!

It has been SNOWING here in Wyoming all day. Yes, you read that right - SNOW. So far, five - seven inches, and still falling in huge, wet flakes.

So, ladies, I would welcome some of your Texas weather, but since it is still winter here, I will take chocolate instead. :teehee:

Thank you so very much. My DD (with Asperger's) is the one who got me started on knitting. She wanted to learn so I had to self teach myself. Now that I'm hopelessly addictied, she doesn't want to knit~GO FIGURE! DH is very handy, so maybe if we could make her a pair of needles of her own she would take some interest in it again.

We moved back to Texas 2 years ago after living in South Dakota for 11 years. That is my home and getting used to the heat/humidity of Houston is an adjustment. My girls and I still miss the snow, but not the long winters.

Alas, I should be banned forever more from Charity Knitting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so sorry guys, I have no good excuses so I won't try to give one. I got the letter, and I want to send the blanket along. To be honest, I thought I could do the border, but I really can't. I tried, but to no avail! I finished the last section though and I am ready to send it along for someone to do a border. Please let me know who I should send it to and it will be on its way. I'm really sorry guys and I understand if you never let me work on a blanket again!!!! :((

There is a new blanket being started that I hope you volunteer to knit a section.

How many blankets are currently in progress? If the blog is up to date, it looks like most of them are almost finished so there should be an abundance of new blankets starting soon. I can wait to knit on the next one that gets started unless of course you need to fill more spots on Hokey Pokey and I can do that too.

Or are we going to be breaking over the summer like last year?

I am not planning on breaking for the summer. The need always exists for our blankets!

If you would like to knit on Frogs & Snails there is still a spot open or there are 2 open on Hokey-Pokey. Of course, you can always do both.

I'd prefer NOT to take a summer break. In my opinion, it slows the progress of the blankets too much and it is too hard to get back into the rhythm after the break.

Hi Everyone,

I've completed the border on Berries & Cream. I selected a dark eggplant colored yarn for the first round and then a pink, lavender and white round for the small shells. Decided to stop at that point as I didn't want to overwhelm this pretty blanket with too much border.

Here is a picture of Hokey Pokey. I used Red Heart yarn. The pattern is called Diagonal Rib. This is one rib pattern that does not pull in. I found it on Knitting on the net. I knit 4 rows, then did 3 repeats of the pattern and finished with 4 rows of knit. I had to increase two stitches in the garter stitch rows to have the multiples come out right. Because I did the increases I also did two decreases in the last 4 knit rows to make the blanket 100 stitches wide.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Spearmint Candy arrived today. Beautiful little blanket in lovely shades of green and cream. Looking forward to creating a border for it. :knitting:

Thanks Tania for the 'bribe' 'apology' skein of yarn. It is lovely and I've been wanting to try Malabrigo yarn and a lace project. Now I don't have any excuses left! cloud9

Will post pictures when the border is completed and then mail off to Purlingkitten.

No picture - I'm now talking to flickr to see why it won't load my pics. I will drag them onto my Ravelry projects page if that works. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/kae1crafts You can take a look there until this picture issue is resolved.

I could add the pics to the Ravelry projects page so you can see Spearmint Candy & Plum Pudding there.

I run a local chapter of the national organization called Project Linus and we do the same thing, we make handmade blankets for seriously ill kids and take them to local hospitals. www.projectlinus.org

Is there a pattern for this blanket? I think it would be a great blankets to learn new stitches with.

Thank you,:muah:

Tena,

We have general guidelines - cast on 100 stitches, use soft yarn such as Simply Caron, knit 3 stitches at beginning and end of each row, each person knits 4 inches in their section and then finishes on the wrong side with a knit row so the next person has a nice starting row. The blankets are mailed to the next person while still on the needles. There are 5 knitters and a border person that work on each blanket.:knitting:

If you want more details, purlingkitten is the person to contact.

It was actually a yarn one of our members sent to me awhile back as a gift - it's a TLC 'Wiggles' yarn. I've never seen it before, outside of receiving it from a fellow knitter (wish I could remember who!). I've been holding on to it not really knowing what to do and I thought, I'll just try it in this blanket. It was fun, took a little getting used to because sometimes the colors would look like another stitch on the needle, but I just had to remember to only knit the main blue color. I would either slip the colors off the needle, or "knit 2 together" using the color and the main blue.

Nice work, everyone.

I've tried uploading a photo, but Flikr has changed its procedures and I can't figure it out.

The photo of the blanket will be on my blog (http://wyomingbreezes.blogspot.com/) on Monday.

Hey, I finally figured it out. I went to "All Sizes" on Flikr and then a right click for the image code. I then pasted the information on the image button on KnittingHelp.com

It would not work on Flikr to get the HtML under "Share This"

I spent some time this morning looking at old posts and thought it would be fun to see how many blankets we have been working on in 2010. I was amazed at the number - 25, according to my count!

Ladies, you are truly amazing! Give yourselves a round of applause. According to the group blog (http://westcoastoddballknitters.blogspot.com/), eight of those are completely finished (with border) and four more are waiting for borders.

This group is truly amazing, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

Let’s give purlingkitten, our coordinator a HUGE “Thank You” for keeping all of these blankets circulating. We could not accomplish so much without her. Thank you, Janet!

Let’s keep those knitting needles clicking.

I would like to say that I enjoy being the leader of the group and working on these baby blankets.

I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to all the wonderful knitters in our group for your dedication, creativity and time spent to work on them.

If you look at the thread title, it is a little different this morning. We have merged the Midwest group into our West Coast group. Our group now includes 26 states. Very exciting, I think! If you have friends, relatives or even acquaintances from: Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevade, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming -- please invite them to join us to create wonderful baby blankets for charity.

I hope there may be some way to either merge the old midwest blog posts in with yours, or to just open up that blog so that people can still see it. Purlingkitten and Shandeh, can you please help to make that happen? I know I'm not the only one who would appreciate it!

WELCOME MIDWEST KNITTERS:muah:  I am so excited to have the midwest knitters as part of our group. I grew up in SD and just moved back to TX where DH is from a little over 2 years ago. It's like a bridge between my heart and where I currently live. I look forward to working with this new amazing group of knitters. Let's rock out some awesome blankets.

I have 4 coupons for Michaels and 1 for Hobby Lobby and they are all 40% off. I was thinking of going and getting some more circs so that we could get some more blankets going and have more of our new knitters join in the fun. How does 5 more blankets sound to the group? I'll post again later with updates on blanket names, etc. This is going to be a fun afternoon of yarn shopping. I can't wait.:knitting:

For those of you who have been wondering about Baby Sparkler, the needle got pulled out while it was in my knitting bag a few weeks ago. I put it away for a while until I could face fixing it. I got really sick with a allergy/ sinus attack which turned into a sinus infection and I did not fell like dealing with it for several weeks. I fixed it last night and will hopefully complete my section today or tomorrow. Only my section was affected. None of the other sections were affected and the blanket is beautiful. I am very sorry for the delay. It was an accident.
