Um!!!! knit one purl one? (K1P1) is that as in rows? I am using a very basic pattern but are not sure what the terminology means. I assume that that's what it is.

I learned to knit by basic "go from the front" Knit, and "go from the back" Purl... so that basic thing as with stockinette stitch is basically foreign to me.

I have read a Sock making book but the term stockinette is not in the glossary, It is in the pattern but not there.

anyhow, anyone please offer much help!!!!

K1p1 is a rib pattern. You knit a stitch, the purl a stitch, knit a stitch, purl a stitch, etc.

You should also know that when you are doing a stitch pattern like this or any other really be aware of the stitch count. k1p1 is made up of two stitches so it's a multiple of two. That means if you have an even number of stitches the final stitch will be a purl stitch. This is even more important if you are knitting in the round. Just something to consider.

Have a look at the Basic Stitches videos on the Tips page. That should help you sort out which is what and how to do them.
