View Full Version : Machine-Washable Yarns

When I'm at school, it's a bit difficult for me to find a place to hand-wash clothes. Is there any nice yarn out there, that's soft and breathable, yet will hold up in a washing machine?

You mean other than acrylic? Acrylic blends usually do well. Can you give us an idea of what kind of yarn you want other than washable?

I was hoping for maybe some sock yarn, and possibly something to knit some hoodies or jackets with. I'm new to buying yarn, I've just been using stuff that my sister gave me when I started knitting, so I don't know much about it.

Hey Bobbi! :waving:
Many sock yarns are washable as it's often impractical to hand wash socks. Most often it will tell you on the label what they recommend for washing. This goes for any other yarn too. As Jan said many acrylic blends are washable too, or looks for yarns labelled "superwash" which means they're wool, but they've been treated to make them washable.

I hate hand washing and only do so in extreme cases. I bought a special lingerie bag for washing molded cup bras, I bought it at Von Maur, and it looks kind of like a small hat box with a zipper. I wash my socks in that with other gentle wash stuff in the wash machine. NOW, I don't use any felty yarns, but my socks always shed their fuzzies in there and come out looking really great.

A couple of worsted-weights that machine wash and dry well are Plymouth Encore and Lion Wool-Ease. These are also available in bulky.

Just recently I knit a baby blanket in Cascade Superwash. It is superwash wool, but it is soft (and gets softer with washing). The colors are amazing and come in large, lush balls.
The label says to machine wash and dry; however, I couldn't bring myself to put it in the dryer and let it air-dry instead. I used a mesh laundry bag in the washing machine and put it on the gentle cycle with no problems at all.
