It looks great. You should be so proud of yourself, especially making up your 'pattern' as you went to get a custom fit. The sleeves look good, and if they are comfortable for you, then they're perfect.

Yep, top down. I didn't follow any pattern, I just calculated the stitches based on percentages and just sort of went from there.

Wow, that looks great, Mason! How heavy did it turn out? Like, a fall weather sweater or 2 feet of snow sweater?

If you had posted saying "This is my 10th sweater and I made it without any problems at all," I would have believed it. The sleeves look fine.

Knitting_Guy

I'd say it a Fall sweater. It'll be great for layering in the Winter underneath a coat.

How many skeins did it take?

I would like a handknit wool sweater but I'm not that thrilled with LionWool (or the colors at Wally World) and can't afford the real expensive yarn. I've thought about Andes but the 50g skeins have me worried.

Puddinpop
08-05-2008, 05:39 PM
It looks great. I don't know what more you could want from it. When you say you calculated the stitches, did you do as many stitches as it would take to make so many inches around? That's interesting.:cheering:

It took 14.5 50g skeins.

Yes, I started with the largest measurement. On most people that would be the chest but on me, well, let's just say it's a bit lower

I did a gauge swatch and calculated the number of stitches for that diameter, then added an additional couple of inches for ease. Everything else, neck, sleeves, etc were percentages of that base measurement. I then tried it on as I went along and made adjustments as needed.

It took 14.5 50g skeins.

At first I balked, but I guess that's because I just figured I could finish the sweater I'm doing now with 5 skeins of Caron.
A little over twice as much for wool isn't bad.
Thanks.

Very, very nice -- I can only echo what everybody else said. It looks awesome, the color is great, and no one would ever know it was your first sweater!

Aren't top-down sweaters great? I love how you can try them on as you go to make them fit the way you want them to.

You can wear that sweater with pride now, and when anyone asks you about it you can tell them (in the words of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee) "It was a challenge, but I did it."

Yeah actually there are a few things I'll do differently on the next one.

I know I'll use a different bind off for the ribbing than I did on the bottom. Way too tight.

I'll probably make the neck ribbing about a quarter of an inch longer than I did on this one.

I'm sure I'll drop the needle size for the bottom ribbing another size as that will make it look a bit more tailored.

I'm sure I'll drink imported beer instead of domestic as I know it'll improve the over all look.

mason,
I just showed your blog and your sweater to my 8 year old grandson that said "men don't knit". I really enjoyed the look on his face when I said I could show him a person who knitted and was a trucker. When I said that you didn't use a pttern but used math to figure out how many stitches need for the fron , back and sleeves really impressed him. He has trouble under standing math right now since he just started third grade and because he didn't pay attention last year, he is slightly behind in his learning.
