Since I started this, I will cast on and start the rotation. Please let me know if you want to be a part, and we can start with 1 and see where it goes. I will give details once I get some knitters on the list!:yay: :muah:

Yay! Thanks Susan! :)

I'll be glad to start one too, because I'm allergic to pets. I can't work on it after you all. I'll call mine "Grapevine", and it will use purple, green, and brown yarns.

Sandy, can you email or pm me the card printout you use for the blankies?
I think I want to start with all variegated yarns. I know we have all picked up some lovely looking colors that have hidden in our stash because they are acrylic, so we can start with that.
So far we have:

I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the snuggles. Is that what you're referring to?

I also include an instruction sheet with the snuggle. And I add a simple greeting card for us all to sign our names and the state we live in. (The card goes to the animal shelter, showing where the snuggle travelled during it's creation.) The blanket, sheet, and card are all placed in a large ziploc bag, and mailed to the next knitter.

Will you be managing the list of knitters for the acrylic blankets, Mulderknitter?

Thanks Sandy for the advice on the xcel spreadsheet. I have no problem managing this one on my own. You already have a bunch, and it was my big idea! (didn't realize it would take off like that!):muah:
Each blanket needs 5 knitters, so I'll just keep starting them as we get more people to knit. If you want to be on more than 1, or a specific blanket, or have an idea for one to start, just let me know. Don't worry about how soft the yarn is for this one, it'll get washed a lot! Also, if you have a talent for finishing borders and would like to be the last knitter to finish the blanket off, just let me know.

You're right....I already handle a LOT of these projects. And, there are always SO MANY wonderful knitters, ready to take on our charity projects. It's a great thing!

Let me know if I need to send a sample spreadsheet to you.

Also, if you have a talent for finishing borders and would like to be the last knitter to finish the blanket off, just let me know.
Just so you know, we aren't doing borders on the cotton snuggles, because the blankets are already the size requested by the Snuggles Project guidelines. And they seem to look pretty good without a border. But, of course, you're welcome to do whatever you want.

:waving: Hi friendly knitters!
I will not be creating a new blog, at least at this moment, for the project, but will be including updates on my current blog, found in the signature of my posts. I do have a running excel sheet of where we are on the blankets, so I will try to post regular updates here of where we are and who is coming up next.
I still need 2 more knitters for "Snuggle Buddy" (blues) if anyone wants to be on that one.

I'm intrigued and I have quite a stash of Red Heart Super Saver yarn that I don't know how I want to use. My colors are "Light Coral", '"Dusty Teal", "Grey Heather" and maybe "Soft Navy", "Rose Pink" and "Light Periwinkle". (I'm getting these color names off of the Knitting-Warehouse website. :) If I'd update Ravelry like I keep saying I want to, I wouldn't be guessing what I have. )

If I have the navy and/or the light blue, I'd like to sign up for the blues (I wonder how they would look knit together?); otherwise I'll just watch for a group that better matches my stash.

I have both a dog and a cat, who they are not allowed anywhere near my yarn, including when I am working on it. I don't know if that makes a difference to the allergy affected (probably not :pout: ) but I wanted to mention it.

I'm a new knitter and do not have much experience with binding off or borders (I'm still struggling with weaving in ends  ); however, I can do a basic crochet border if needed. (Not really volunteering but letting you know that I probably could finish it off. I haven't been following the other oddball threads, so I'm not sure what the finished blankets usually look like.)

Hi Katie! :waving:

I'm sure that Mulderknitter will be happy to use your knitting on our snuggles! They can be made with ANY color yarn, actually, because the homeless pets are not critical about color choices. They just want to snuggle on the blanket.
cloud9

And I don't think you'll need to worry about allergies either. Everyone else in the group has lots of pets. (I'm the only allergic one, so I just START snuggles.)

Be sure to send a private message to Mulderknitter, with your name and mailing address, so she can add you to the list of knitters.

Hi and welcome Katie!
You can use whatever yarn you have around that is acrylic. That is why I started this blanket group. I have tons of acrylic that I don't know what to do with because a coworker of mine gave me 5 trashbags full after her mom died. I donated some, but kept some too.
I'd be happy to add you to Snuggle Buddy for some blue. You just need to hold the 2 strands of yarn together and knit as if they are one. I can put you on as the 3rd knitter, so you don't have to worry about binding off the bottom or weaving in ends. And we are actually not worrying about a crochet border, as the blankets are already the right size :woohoo: (I can't crochet at all).
I don't think any of us have allergies except for Sandy, so she just starts one when she has time:knitting:
You can send me a PM with your name and address and I will add you to the list!
Thanks again!:waving:

So call me clueless, but I plead new knitter to account for my ignorance. (Of course, as a new knitter, I also don't yet have much of a "stash" to pull from.) What exactly are pet snugglers? I kinda gleaned that you're making something (a small blanket?) for pets in shelters, and I would love to contribute to something like that (especially if the knitting doesn't have to be perfect--I do pretty good, but still a newbie). So could somebody clue me in with more details so I can decide if I want to "sign up"? Maybe there's a link?
Thanks

:waving: Hi DJBug!
A pet snuggle is basically a small blanket for pets. They are called "oddballs" because a bunch of knitters work on it from what they have in their stash, and it kinda/sorta matches but it's nice because it's all different and nothing is perfect! It's a great way for a newbie to learn! All you do on these pet snuggles are the knit stitch for 5 inches, everything comes in the mail to you with the blanket already started on the needles from the other people, keep everything on the needles and send it in the mail to the next person. You don't have to bind off or weave in ends because it goes in the mail for the next person to work on!

You can look at previous posts in this forum for an idea of what they look like, or on the 2nd page I posted a picture of the one I started just a few days ago.

You can feel free to join in if you want, and contact anyone of us via this forum or pm me if you get the blanket in the mail and are confused. Otherwise, you can also feel free to "watch" along with the thread to see if you are interested. We also make a point of contacting the next knitter in line when the blanket is ready to go off so that they are ready, and if they have too much stuff going on to work on the blanket, we just send it to the next person, so no one is obligated to work on it if it's their turn and they have too much other stuff going on.
Hope that helps!:muah:

(I thought I already posted a reply, but I don't see it anywhere, so sorry if I end up double-posting)
This sounds like fun to me; of course I'll have to go buy some acrylic yarn--gives me an excuse to go shopping!
I really like working with variegated yarns, but am willing to do whatever--let me know so I know what to pick up next time I head out to the craft store. Oh, and what weight--worsted? (showing my beginner-ness again!)
(I'm assuming at some point someone will ask for my address to be able to send the project to me....)

Looking forward to adding to a blanket.....

Shandeh
01-08-2009, 01:35 AM
Worsted weight is correct!

Some of our knitters like to wait until they get the snuggle in their hands, and they take it to the craft store to choose a color that will work well with it.

Oh! And we sometimes include little treats to the next knitter. (tea, coffee, candy, notecards, candles, yarn, knitting notions) Makes things even more fun!

Hi and welcome DJ bug!:muah: I will be casting on Snuggle buddy this week and will start another one probably shortly after. (dunno, reds??? haven't done reds yet???) Would you like to work in blue's or another color scheme? You can do variegated in blues if you want for Snuggle buddy, or you can do anything that goes well with it. Like Sandy said, sometimes I wait to get the blanket from the knitter and take it to the store to see what will go well. You will just need 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together, and you will be set!
If you want to work on snuggle buddy just let me know, i will do a bit of rearranging so that you won't be the last knitter on it.
Please pm me your address and what blanket you want to be on, and I will get you on the list! Don't forget, we are always here (always, really, I work on a computer at work and constantly check this site :roflhard: ) to answer any questions you might have.

I received 2 pet snuggles today! BUT I don't know what their names are!

1. is the blanket I'm finishing, it came from someone in Parix, Tx (I didn't want to say her real name).
2. is the blanket that came from Spikey. I will be the 2nd knitter on this blanket.
Thank you to both ladies for the 2 skeins of yarn I received. I just love getting new yarn!

I hope this isn't too confusing for you shandeh!

~danielle~

PS. Please forgive me, but are there any color/themes I need to be aware of for either of these blankets? Blame it on the pregnancy but I seem to be forgetting everything! :)

Danielle-i believe the first one you got was from JDee? she is in Paris, Tx. The name of that blanket is forever friends. I wonder if there are cards in either of those blankets that have the names of the blankets on them? If there aren't do you think you could throw one in or write the name of the blanket on the cards???
Thanks for updating!:muah:

:woohoo: We have another new knitter! DJBug is officially on Snuggle Buddy!
I have reordered the snuggle buddy blanket a bit so that our new knitters (or new to the oddballs) don't have to cast off or weave in ends. If this new order doesn't suit you, please let me know.

If anyone is adverse to ending the blanket, I can just put myself as the last knitter, and donate to Feline Rescue http://www.felinerescue.org/ here in MN. They are a no kill/foster/shelter program for cats and kittens and if you are a longtime member you may remember the saga of the 5 kittens and mama that I found under my porch. That is the organization that took in and found homes for all of those poor guys. If you are a knitter that wants to donate, I would urge you to seek a program that values your beliefs in animal humaneness. Even shelters that are not no-kill need help too!

Thank you everyone for helping me with this project. I have been blessed by my two snuggle buddies Mulder and Itchy, and I thank you for helping me pass those blessings on!:muah:

I wouldn't mind being an end knitter at some point in time (future blanket is perfectly fine). I'll be donating the blanket to the best friends organization in utah.

They do the tv show dogtown on natgeo and they took in 22 of the michael vick dogs. They are a no kill shelter and just a wonderful group. I have a blanket I will be finishing up from the cotton snuggles that will be headed there soon along with some homemade catnip toys and hopefully a parrot sweater or two!

I looked on that website linked in the cotton snuggles thread and the local shelter that I got my beagle from is listed. I'll be happy to finish one sometime in the future, but before I take that on I want to try one and see how I manage that first piece. :knitting:

Also, I went through all of my yarn tonight (my stash isn't huge, but I don't have any plans for any of it so it is something that needs to be managed) and I found I do have partial skeins of Country Blue and Soft Navy. (Not the colors I guessed earlier.)

I don't have a lot of the Country Blue left -- I weighed it on my little scale and came up with 68g (includes sleeve). Any idea if that is enough? I'll have to check and make sure somebody carries it so I can run and buy a skein when my turn is up, if I need to. :)

Best friends has asked for parrot sweaters b/c these birds usually come from homes that have been stressfull/neglectfull. The birds tend to pull their feathers out (it's a reaction to the stress/neglect). There is a really easy pattern someone came up on ravelry. I'll just be using that simple pattern to knit up a couple to send along to help the birds. It's a good way to use up more of that acrylic yarn!

And just to let everyone know, I like to have a color theme to the blankets, but this is absolutely not set in stone. It is just a start. If you have some yarn and want to knit, just let me know. There are many ways we can help out. You can knit iin another color which is totally fine, (animals don't care) or we can send you some yarn if you want to keep with the theme. NO WORRIES AT ALL! The charity blankets are so that we can help out, not stress or worry in any way at all. I'd love to work on pet snuggles. Pretty much my entire stash is acryllic as I'm allergic to wool so I have a variety of colors. I have a ton of cream yarn if that fits into any of the color schemes.

Thanks

Hi Mckane and cheley!
All you have to do is pm me your address and if you have a preference for a blanket you want to be on. Right now we have knitters for all but Critter Cozy, but I will be casting on more blankets as soon as I have some time :roflhard: The blankets are made with 2 strands of worsted acrylic held together, so the color possiblities are endless!
cheley-I believe cream yarn will fit into ANY of the color schemes, if that helps.
Welcome to acrylic oddball knitters!:muah:

I have not gotten to the post office yet. It's been so cold here I haven't wanted to go anywhere!

I can back that up and second it too! The high yesterday was -6 with a -25 windchill. Do you know what that equals? A cold day you know where! I am on vacation today and tomorrow and I am saving all of my errands for tomorrow when I go out I will do EVERYTHING. Including the USPS.

NP....it's been pretty cold here, too. Unfortunately, babies are born no matter what the weather, so I still have to go to work--labor & delivery just doesn't close!
Let me know when you do send it so I know when to look for it!

I got Snuggle Buddy yesterday. Will pick up my yarn on my way to work tomorrow (need to wait for the paycheck....went to IKEA on Monday and, of course, overspent our budget:shrug: .....good thing we limit our trips to 3-4 times a year! :teehee: )

Were there supposed to be instructions? Like the next address to send it to? Other than that, I'll be all set once I get my yarn tomorrow....will keep you posted when I'm ready to send it along.

I don't have the instruction sheet set up yet. Basically do the same as the person did before you, 5 inches of garter stitch w/ 2 worsted weight yarns held together. When you are done with your section, you can pm me or post here and I will contact the next knitter.
Thanks!:waving:

Sandy-Thank you! I actually took a picture off the pet snuggle website and created our own card for the blankets. Go ahead and include this one though for the one that you are starting. No big deal.

Hi:waving:
Just another quick note while our project gets started. You CAN, but you don't HAVE TO include a special "treat" or "present" for the next knitter on the blanket. Some people like to send some special yarn, some tea or coffee, a candle, etc. Nothing big, or expensive, just a nice thank you for being on the project. But in no way should anyone feel obligated to do so. Just being a part of the project is present enough for us!
If you are going to include a present or treat, could you please include a small note letting the next person know that you are including that for them? I'm guilty of the no note when in a rush to get to the post office, but we should try to make sure our wonderful knitters know that when we do include a goodie it's for them to enjoy!:muah:
Because I didn't have the instruction sheet when starting this project, if you have a blanket that doesn't have one/only has the card to sign, if you could be so kind as to print one off if you can and include it when you mail it to the next knitter? This might be a pain and I really apologize for not having that set up at the get-go, but I sure would appreciate it.
And if you ever have questions when you get your blanket in the mail, please pm me! :waving:

Slow Shandeh is back with another report. :)

I got "His Majesty" boxed up and ready to mail. Now, I just have to wait until I can afford to mail it! Ha! :teehee:

I just paid our house payment today, and that wiped me out. I have 6 packages sitting here, ready to go. So, next week after I teach a few piano lessons, I'll take them all to the post office.

In the meantime, I've been knitting up a storm. I finished the first section of THREE pet snuggles this week. (One of them is an acrylic snuggle for Mulderknitter's group.)

However, if you end up with a blanket that is waiting for a volunteer, you can go ahead and send it to me. I'm getting impatient. :teehee:

I can even finish Critter Cozy and drop it off at the Humane Society of Livingston County (http://www.h4ha.org/shelter-directory/index.php), which appears to accept Snuggles Projects. (Their description includes "We would love to receive the Snuggles! They would certainly be put to good use.") I've never been there -- I live at the very edge of the next county -- but they are not far from me. You just have to tell me what I need to do to finish it off. :)

"Her Highness" - needs 1 knitter
(knit with red, purple, or pink yarns)

"My Prince" - needs 3 knitters

I remembered reading that on the blanket forum. One more reason to love the ODD part of this project's name!!

No worries...all the other sections are also 4" (give or take) and is 21" wide. Sooooo, if I do one extra inch in the same colors and the last knitter does an extra row or so to make it a 21" square (or a 24" rectangle), would that be the best way?

I think that 24" was the target, but I doubt any of our pets would know or care that it was a little off.

I think the knitter before you had the same problem. Just go ahead and do your 4 inches and send it on, or do an extra inch if you don't mind. I don't think it will matter much if it's a bit short.
Secksiebrat-you are scheduled to have Hugs n Snugs after SgtPam, would you mind doing the full 5 inches even though the beginning sections are only 4?
Um... yea... this one might be the example of ODD:roflhard:

I was looking at the Snuggle Project website to check out a few places in my area that participate so that I can finish one sometime soon and donate it in my town. :happydance:

Anyway.......they have some other patterns you might like. Maybe we could start one with the twisted garter stitch? It's still just one stitch, but it's "K in back loop of every stitch in every row". The note says that it "creates a firmer, plusher straight knit Snug".

:blooby: http://www.snugglesproject.org/content/view/88/30/

if you haven't looked at the project's website yet, I'd encourage you to check it out.

I have PM'd secksiebrat and Jdee to see if they are ready. I will pm their addresses to you as soon as I hear back from them.
If you are a more advanced knitter and want to use one of the stitch patterns suggested, go right ahead:muah: I think we started it with garter stitch because it's easier when holding 2 yarns together and the new knitters don't have to worry about a pattern. Whatever makes you happy!

Um... yea... this one might be the example of ODD:roflhard:
We've had LOTS of "oddball" examples in our projects. :teehee:
That actually makes it fun, because we learn new stitches as we're going. Our project is a WONDERFUL way for new knitters to learn the craft of knitting. :)

And with the snuggles, I don't think the pets will mind if our blankets look "interesting".

Thank you for the yarn, I can't tell you how lovely it is!:muah:
I hit an estate sale on Sunday, they had posted they had yarn so I waited for the last minute to go so they would discount everything. Everything in the house was $10 a bag!!:woohoo: I walked out with about 50 odd skeins of yarn, mostly acrylic, but enough in one color that I could make a really nice afghan if I found the time!:roflhard:

Hi trvlbuddy! :waving:
You're welcome to join us. You might be interested in the acrylic pet snuggles group also, which uses acrylic yarn to make snuggles. If you want to work with us in the cotton snuggles world, you'll need to buy 2 skeins of cotton yarn for each section you knit.

If you want to join our group, just send me a private message with your name and mailing address to make it official. If you want to join the acrylic group, contact Mulderknitter. :)

I may be able to finish off Critter Cozy, depending on when the other two that I signed up get to me, although it may be awhile before I can drop it off. (Having a newborn means I may have time to work on it; but having a newborn means I may or may not be driving around in the middle of winter. :) I wonder if I can just mail it? :?? )

Tomorrow I go to the hospital to deliver and I probably won't be back online until next week sometime, so I just wanted to toss my name out now in case you get to that point before then and you need a volunteer.

I was reading this great story about a couple of soldiers in Iraq that saved 2 puppies and were able to bring them home with the help of this search and recue project/program.

Here's the story http://rescue.dogpile.com/jackandemma/

You use it just like google. Here's their "mission statement"

We're on a mission to help pets in need. We call it our Search & Rescue program. Now when you search with Dogpile, a portion of the revenue generated will be donated to the pet charity ASPCAź.* The more you search, the more we'll rescue. It's that simple. Our goal is to raise $1 million for pet rescue by the end of 2009.

Check it out.

Hi! :waving:

I've been home since Friday -- I'll post more details in the next day or so -- and I wanted to pop in and say I'm ready to go! :)

I need yarn, though -- I only have the yarn for Snuggle Buddy in my stash. I figure this is a good opportunity for me to try out some acrylics other than the red heart super saver that is in my stash. Is anyone else buying yarn as you go? Any suggestions on brands or labels to check? I have Michael's, Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's stores close by, so I'll be watching their sales ads while I wait for my turn.

jdee
02-09-2009, 07:20 PM
Hobby Lobby sells a yarn called I Love This Yarn. It's the same price as RH Super Saver, has lots of yardage, and comes in lots of pretty colors, but it's much softer. I use it alot for Oddball knitting. Vanna's Choice is another soft yarn. It's more pricey, but is frequently on sale.

Mulderknitter
02-09-2009, 07:22 PM
You can also get Caron's Simply Soft, and Red Heart has a Soft yarn now too. Both are around $2 a skein and lots of yardage as well.

Critter Cozy arrived today. I told DH what it was and what we were doing with it and his opinion is that we could buy plenty of blankets with the money we are spending shipping it from one person to another.

However, he is also indulgent and tomorrow he is taking me out to buy yarn for it. (I have some yarn that would work, but I like having a "good" excuse to go out and shop for yarn. :teehee: I'm planning to buy one new skein and pair it with one out of my stash. Win-win, right? :eyebrow: )

Thanks Marria!

I resized your photo, so it would not exceed the size limits of our forum. Your photos should not be more than 500 pixels wide.

You can use the features of photobucket to auto resize your photos for you. They also have an image code you can copy and paste that KH uses for it's photos

Yep...and Flickr works too. I always post the Medium size photos from my Flickr account, and they fit perfectly in the forum.

I actually used one of the resizing sites that Jan in CA lists in her post here:
http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80610

I assumed that the 800 pixel limit she posted there applied to all the forums on KH. I'll make sure to keep the photos to 500 pixels or less in the future. Thanks. :)

I have the snuggle packed up and ready to go--I just got pulled into an all day meeting today and didn't have time to go to the post office. I plan to do it on my lunch hour tomorrow.

Thanks!

Neat! I'm glad that Jan's stuff helped you out. She's a smart one. And I'm sure she's right about the 800 pixels. I usually size down to 500 pixels because I never have a problem that way.

How about Cuddlebug?

I love you guys:woohoo: Cuddlebug is awesome!
I am home with some sort of plague today, and am off work tomorrow so I have time to knit, and garter stitch is about the only thing my fever addled brain can handle. If I can stumble to the post office, will you be ok with me mailing it this weekend?
We still need 3 more knitters for Cuddlebug!:yay:
And we need 1 finisher for Pretty pets!

I love Cuddlebug! (The colors and the name). I'd like to help with this one - it will be my first snuggle... I'm currently working on my first oddball baby blanket, and it's fast, and fun! Where else can you "finish" a project with only 4 or 5 inches of knitting?

Hi yarncharmer and welcome!:waving:
Do you want to be the finisher of Cuddlebug? Or you can be after MishaRF as the 3rd knitter on the blanket. Just let me know
could you pm me your info (address) and I will add you to the list!
Thanks so much for joining!:muah: :woohoo:

Thanks for the welcome! I don't care which spot you put me in - wherever works best, although I don't know what's required for finishing. I'll send you a pm.

Have a great time, Shandeh. I just got back home from vacation. I should be relaxed, but all I can think of is how much I need to clean this house.
