Hi - I stop in every once in a while to see how you all are doing. It's a wonderful thing you do!! I continue to make snuggles for my local shelter when I have time. I just donated my 24th one since mid-last year! I hope that the shelters where you donate them appreciates them as much as my local shelter does. I found out that they sometimes give them with newly adopted cats, which is kind of fun. I poked in at the shelter's web site and caught a picture of a kitty on one, so I thought I'd share. Anyway, keep up the good work!! :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

I probably have her addy somewhere, but would you mind PMing it to me anyway. I don't want to take the chance of mixing her up with someone else.

Twillight has been started, but my Grandma wanted in on the action, so before it goes off to Melmac51, it's going to her. I hope no one minds! :muah: It will just shift everyone's spot down 1.

The right hand bar of the blog is updated again with our blanket status! :muah:
If you think something is off or you want to change something, let me know...
It's getting to that time where we have a lot of blankets being finished and not a lot on the move anymore. I'd like to get some more going and have more activity!
Do you have any ideas? Are there any blankets you really liked working on? Did you like the fun fur? Do you have other crazy yarn (I know I do:knitting: ) that you think would work? What about chunky yarn?
Please, give us all your ideas! I can get some more going and get you all on the lists! Lets get some blankets on the move again!:muah:

I just pm'd you to check on it!
thanks!

I am getting another blanket started, but haven't had anyone offer to start any for me which is why we're so low right now.
Does anyone have any needles and want to start one or want to mail them to someone who can??:muah:

We use size 10 to 10.5 US sizes. We use circular needles because they can hold the size of the blanket and be folded up nicely for mailing

Cricket, I finished Patriotic Paws a couple of weeks ago, and it's been donated to a Shih Tzu rescue group. It turned out really cute! I also finished Snug as a Bug last night-- another pretty one! Now I just need to do Team Spirit, and donate it and "Bug" and I will be finished with all the snuggles in my possession. I will try to post pics of them all, too, but I seem to be picture-posting challenged.

Oh, yeah, and I have empty needles from Patriotic Paws, Snug as a Bug, Peachy, and soon will have them from Team Spirit. :aww: sorry to end up with so many :aww: but most of them all arrived here near the same time. I can start one and send some needles around to some other people to start some more. Who wants them? :happydance:

I have lots of small pieces of odds and ends of projects in acrylic. I was thinking of starting a new snuggle and calling it 'Kitchen Sink" I would make one strand a continuous solid color and the other I would use to 'use up' the small pieces that I dont really know what to do with. What do you thinK? If you think it is a good idea, I be happy to get one started for us. If there are any going please put me on the list.

I think that sounds like a great idea, mspwrz! I think there was one with black carried throughout and then a different color for each section, and it turned out really pretty! And I think having lots of smaller scraps within the sections sounds like it would look great, especially with the one color carried through the whole thing. Would you like me to send you a set of needles? The needles stay with the project through the whole snuggle, so I'd be glad to send you some dedicated snuggle-needles so you don't have to give up some of your own. Just let me know!

That would be great. I have started a baby snuggle before but this will be my first pet snuggle. I just think it will look really cute with several different colors accented with one main color AND I can use up some of those odds and ends that we alll probably have.:woot:

When I was at Hobby Lobby today, I found a set of size 10 circs in the discount sale bin. I got them to use for a new snuggle. I thought of putting red and brown together and calling it Chocolate cover cherries, but I'm thinking it would open more color options if we called it Box of Chocolates. Then we can pair brown with just about any color.

Not only did I have fun knitting this but a customer came in my line today(I'm a cashier) and gave me a box of chocolate, Mint meltaways! If someone gives Jdee some chocolate covered cherries then I will think this is some magical Snuggle. So I suggest that whoever works on this next pick their most favorite flavor of chocolate. You never know!

Kitchen Sink will be in the mail to Melanie in LA in the morining. I will post the confirmation number as soon as I get home from the post office. I originally planned for one strand to be the same color through out the blanket (black) but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of it being the same color throughout the section so that you can use up those odds and ends. So ladies on the list, use everything and the kitchen sink!!!:muah:

I spent the afternooon volunteering at an adoption event for the Wichita County Humane Society. I had never volunteered before but my son and his girlfriend were going and asked me to come along. We had a great time! I will be volunteering regularly at the shelter now that I have seen the sweet animals there. They will take snuggles and blankets. I am going to try and make a few sewn ones as well as knitted ones.
I am going back tomorrow to visit some of the dogs and meet some of the kitties in the cat habitat with the kids. Will try to post pics if I can get them.

It really hurts me to do this. My husband will soon be changing jobs, and we will be losing a large portion of our income for a period of time. Because I need to tighten our budget during this transitional period, and mailing snuggles costs extra money, I'm going to have to withdraw from the oddball snuggle project for a while. I hate to do this so much, but I'm going to have to remove my name from the snuggles I've signed for. I'll be back the second our finances return to normal.

Hello All!

Just a note to say that "Kitchen Sink", and "Box of Chocolates" are ready for the next knitters. Sorry it took me so long, but we had a few obstacles. My DH went in for an outpatient surgery, and we found out that he has non-hodgkins lymphoma and chronic lymphocitic leukemia. What a shock! His surgery was on the Monday after I lost my job.

Between taking care of him as he recovered from his surgery, and picking up the slack while he's unable to cut the grass and his other "husbandly" chores, I was just too exhausted to knit for awhile there. Back on it though...I even brought them with me to a few of his doctors and procedures appointments. He's doing okay, the cancer is very treatable. He started his treatments last week, and so far, he's only had a couple of bad days.

Just let me know who to mail those snuggles to, and I'll get them to the post office! Also, I have a set of needles from the snuggle that I completed. Any suggestions for themes for the next snuggle?

:grphug:

Melanie,
I am so sorry to hear about your troubles. I just knew that something must be wrong because you pretty much disappeared for a while. My mom is a breast cancer survivor so I understand the way that it can totally rock your world in a bad way. Things have been pretty slow as the summer has heated up so I don't think any one is upset about the delay. I am getting ready to go back to my teaching job next week but will work some this week to get my new room ready. I will be praying for both your employment situation and your husbands treatment.

I got Purple People Eater in the mail yesterday and I will be working on it later this week. I am very concerned that our group seems to have dwindled. It makes me sad because the snuggles are an easy knit that anyone can do. Being a shelter volunteer, I know that there are countless animals out there that need the snuggles. I really wish for new life for our group. The need is most definitely there.

Hi Rhonda - Yes, it's been fun watching this group do so much for the shelters. All of you Snuggles knitters inspired me, and I just finished my 38th one. My stash is big and I get leftover yarn from other people (and use my 40% off coupons from Michaels, etc.) and so I launched my own Snuggle campaign a little over a year ago. When I take the Snuggles to the shelter, they love them. And I often see pictures on the shelter's web site with a kitty sitting on one I made.

So keep up the good work, everyone!

I would like to make a challenge to all the Oddball Blanket groups.

Use my design ideas to knit two blankets for your group.

Blanket 1: “GENIUS”
Black, White, and Red

Blanket 2: “SUPERHERO” :star:
Comic Book Colors

I think it will be interesting to see what each group does with this!
I will make a new blog, showing the progress of the blankets. Be sure to post photos, which I can use to highlight the work for your regions!

When the blankets are complete, I will send an additional blanket (knit by me) to your region, for you to donate in your area. So, everyone will be a winner! :)

Hi all! :waving:

I haven't been around or doing much knitting lately, but I was thinking I'd like to sign up for these blankets again. It's been about two years since I last participated (when I was on maternity leave for my now two year old :teehee:) and I haven't been keeping up with the thread.

Are you taking new knitters? How much time do we get with each blanket? What are the requirements again? Is the process the same or have there been changes and improvements? (Not that I remember what I did before.)

I'd be happy to be at the beginning, middle or end of a blanket -- I have a couple of local shelters that I think would accept them and I would love the excuse to go buy a new circ -- just let me know. :)

I guess I could just make my own too, but I remember how fun it was keeping track of the blankets and watching them grow! And how interesting it was to see the differences in everyone's garter stitch.

I realize that this appears to be past its heyday, but I would love to participate in this if we still have a group going. If we don't is there someway we can get another going and try to start this back up? There's a lot of good work we can do and a lot of animals we can help with this kind of cooperative community.

Our daughter runs a sanctuary for special needs animals in Northern California. There's never enough money to cover spay/neuter, food, and vet bills. I buy yarn at yard sales, then knit or crochet pet beds, toys, and blankets for the critters, and also people products to sell online with all the proceeds going to the animals. I'M ALWAYS UP FOR ANY PET/YARN PROJECT THAT ANYBODY WANTS TO WORK ON. I can also promote what others are doing on my websites, Twitter, Facebook, etc. :happydance:

It looks like Mulderknitter (the leader of the Oddball Pet Snuggles) is not participating here in the KH Forum anymore. And there aren't any active discussions in the Ravelry group either.

I'll be happy to start a blanket for you all here, and the rest of you can knit sections, finish it off, and donate it to a shelter. I'm allergic to animal hair, so I can only START blankets. (I know that several of you have animals that "love on" the blankets as you are working on them.)

Then, when the snuggle is finished, that knitter can start another blanket, and get the ball rolling again. This way, we will at least have some snuggles being created for the animals.

Here is the chart I made, that shows the different sizes of snuggles we can make.

Since it's been so long since our group has knit a snuggle, let's just start over here. I just need to know who is participating now. You can send me a private message, with your name and mailing address to sign up. (Don't post your name and address here, since this is a public forum)

I will be happy to manage the snuggles here in the KH Forum. We are a smaller, more intimate group than the one in Ravelry.

Shandeh, I had sent you (I think) my info for the SE Baby blankets group... Do you still have it/ did I send it to you?

BTW, I only knit in my bedroom and while I have animals none of them are allowed in my bedroom (or even in my wing of this multi-generational nut house I live in), so you can knit on a blanket that I started :D.

Yes, I still have your info.

Let's do this thing!

So do we work with themes like with the baby blankets or what? I've got tons of white, lots of red and multiple shades of blue super saver... I've got three cones of ombre yellow/white Peaches N' Cream cotton. (That I can see right this moment...) And if I recall what the first page said, we knit with two strands on size 10 needles right?

Shandeh
08-07-2011, 04:09 PM
Good questions!

Yes, we name our blankets, just like we do with the Oddball Baby Blankets. Makes it easier to keep up with discussions about each blanket. Otherwise, we'd be saying, "I finished my section of that blue and red and orange blanket....who's next?" :teehee:

If you'd like, you can start a "Patriotic Pets" snuggle with your red, white and blue. Send it to me when you finish the first section, and I'll add a section to it. :)

You are correct about the way they are made:

Size 10 or 11 knitting needles. Cast on 72 stitches.
Two strands of yarn held together throughout.
Each section is 5 inches long.

We use either acrylic or cotton....but the fiber should be consistent from beginning to end. Each snuggle should be entirely cotton....or entirely acrylic.

Here's our blog, which hasn't been updated in over a year.
http://oddballsnuggles.blogspot.com/

I'll update it when we get some snuggles started. I don't know the status of the earlier snuggles. Maybe Mulderknitter can tell us where they are. But, I prefer to focus on starting up new ones.

Awesome!

So, are you going with the Patriotic idea? If so, I need to get others to sign up to join in making that snuggle.

Did you want to knit the last section as well, so you can get your needles back? If you are, then we only need two more knitters.

TreshaRuthe
08-08-2011, 01:11 PM
I was definitely liking the patriotic idea, and getting my needles back would be lovely, though as long as they keep circulating to keep this going, I'm fine with that as well. (Run-on should have been my middle name...)

Anyway, when it comes right down to it, if we can get a third member that would be lovely, otherwise, I'm happy to do the final slot.

Just got the PM. :)

I'd love to join up again! I will warn you that I am a bit of a slow knitter -- it was taking me about two weeks to finish my section when I participated before, and I was on maternity leave then! I'm working full-time now and I expect it will take me longer.

If that's not a problem, go ahead and sign me up! I can even start a blanket.

I'm an acrylic girl; if I ever make a dent in my acrylic stash, maybe I'll consider cotton, but right now I'm looking at this being a stash busting exercise. :teehee:

I also have pets so I can't ever send to Shandeh. :pout:

Hi Gill1,

I wish we could use you to help with our snuggles, but we only use knitters located in the USA.

You're welcome to start a group in Ireland, though! Just check with your local animal shelters, to see what size blankets they need, then get together a group of your knitting friends to make the snuggles as a team, passing the blanket from house to house.

Take care!

Thanks for joining in again to help us make pet snuggles.

I will cast on a new snuggle this week, and you will be the 3rd knitter. Now, we just need one or two more knitters for that one. And I still need to come up with a name, because I haven't even looked at my stash yet.

I was busy this week, knitting a French Scarf to wear when I go to visit my sister in California at the end of this month. She paid for plane tickets for me and my oldest son to go there for a week. I'm so excited!

I've heard that the nights get chilly in California, so now I'll have something to wrap around my shoulders. cloud9

Thank you both!

Which one of you wants to be the last knitter?

Our last knitter will need to bind off the snuggle, donate it to their local animal shelter, and start another snuggle for us.

I've come up with a name for this snuggle. Since I have a lot of brownish colors available in my stash, I'm calling it "Mountain Hike".

All of this yarn was given to me for my charity knitting. I'll be double stranding the Vanna's Choice along with one or two of the other yarns.

That's fine with me, Sandy. You could even reassign my spot on "Mountain Hike". (I'm spot #4 on both that one AND Patriotic Pets so I am concerned that I will get them at the same time.)

Also, I'm wondering how people are doing the ends of the rows? I normally just knit to the end, turn, knit to the end, turn, etc, but I was reading across the board that people have different ways of doing the end stitches.

I've been experimenting with slipping the last stitch purlwise, but I haven't actually finished anything that way and am not sure what I think of it yet.

I don't know that it matters, but I wonder what everyone else does/is doing/will be doing? I would be interested to see if everyone already has the same strategy and I'm the lone one without a plan! :teehee:

Shandeh, it's fine with me that you are using other knitters on Flower Path. Don't want to leave anyone out of the fun, but don't want any blankets to sit without knitters either. :waving:

sakura-panda, and everyone else. I have tried several ways of working the first and last stitches for a neat edge and this is the one I like best. With the yarn in the back, I slip the first stitch in the row as if to knit; then I knit the second-to-last stitch and purl the last stitch in the row. This gives a twist to the edge stitches and makes them a little tighter than the standard "slip the first stitch purlwise with yarn in front and knit the last stitch". (I have never liked that edge because the stitches are too loosy-goosy to me.) On the oddball baby blankets I have worked on, I just do what the previous knitters have done, so as not to confuse anyone. :knitting:

Shandeh

I always just knit every stitch, from beginning to end, on every row. Looks fine to me. And I like keeping the snuggles easy, so beginners are comfortable joining our project.

Here is a link to a very large photo of a snuggle I just knit. You can see the edge well with that shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/59646927@N00/6050130833/sizes/o

I think the fun part of our project is the anticipation, and the excitement when we get our package in the mail! I know I have a smile on my face whenever I get a package. Feels like Christmas!

So, now that we are all getting set up and learning more about each other, let's talk about what kinds of treats we would like to get in the mail.

Some of our knitters will include small, inexpensive treats for the next knitter, just to make it a little more fun. We don't spend a lot of money. Just little things. Like tea bags, or chewing gum, or a skein of yarn.

Here are my favorite little treats:
Tic Tacs
Altoids
Chewing Gum (any flavor)
Sour Gummies
Jelly Bellies
Life Savers
Sugar free candies
Tiny boxes or metal tins, for storing knitting gadgets or medicines
Tea bags
A single bag of popcorn
Knitting and Crochet Gadgets (of course!)
Old magazines (any kind)

What kind of treats would the rest of you enjoy?

Perfect! Sakura-Panda can be the next knitter on "Pink Poodle". glowyone, just send a private message to sakura-panda, to get her mailing address, so you two can work out the transition. :)

Well, I left for Wisconsin on Saturday and was done with my section by Sunday afternoon... I just forgot one very important thing... To have the address of the next person on for me to send it onward in its journey. The picture will follow when I can get somewhere that doesn't have pets.

Shandeh, please put me on the list of only knitting first as well. I have discovered that after years of not living with cats I have developed a massive allergy to cats. Before it was minor and I could live with it, now it's REALLY bad.

As soon as I have the address of where to send Patriotic Pets to it'll go out the following day (hopefully).

TIA,
Tre'sha

You can just post the tracking number here.

And I've decided that we won't worry about having a card for everyone to sign. Most of them get lost anyway. When the last knitter finishes up a snuggle, they can write a note, listing the KH Forum names of all the knitters, or they can just let the shelter know that 5 knitters from all over the US each took turns knitting the snuggle.

I know how you feel, Tresha! My allergies are INSANE!
Funny thing is, I am a piano teacher, and teach in other people's homes. Most of my students have pets, so I'm exposed to animals almost every day, all week long. But, my students and their parents know that I'm allergic, so they keep their animals in another room. And I take allergy pills and use an inhaler every day. So, I'm working hard to deal with it.

Fridays are my worst day, because my medicine just can't handle one of the houses I go to teach that day. They have SIX CATS! I teach 3 lessons in that same house, so by the end of the lessons, I'm sneezing and scratching my eyes. So, I use my rescue inhaler as soon as possible, and drive home with the windows down.

What kind of treats would the rest of you enjoy?

Here are my favorite surprises::woot:
Knitting Gadgets
Tiny boxes, bags or metal tins, for storing knitting gadgets
Yarn; if it's from someone else's stash, it still counts a stash busting....right?:knitting:
Knitting magazines or patterns
Tea, Spices, Herbs

I also like:
Chewing Gum
Jelly Bellies
Life Savers
Tiny boxes or metal tins
Tea bags (anything with peach flavor)
A single bag of popcorn
Knitting and Crochet Gadgets
Yarn--come on, don't you have some Why did I buy that?? yarn hiding in your stash

Hi everyone! :waving:
I bet you were all wondering where I've been. :hiding:

As soon as I got home from California, I got sick with a killer cold. I spent several days in bed, and am just now beginning to get better. I went to the doctor yesterday, and she said I have a bad sinus infection. I'm now on antibiotics, using an inhaler and nasal spray, and running a vaporizer.

I just keep the spreadsheet on my computer. There's only 10 of us, so it works fine for now.

I have another question.... Can I use 1 strand of wool-ease chunky or should I double it up? Sorry for so many questions....TG
We use two strands of worsted weight for all our blankets. Chunky is not quite thick enough, I don't think....but I could be wrong. I guess the only way to know would be to knit a gauge swatch with the chunky, and another swatch with two strands worsted, and see how they measure up to each other.

It's called "Autumn Run", and makes me think of a dog and cat playfully chasing each other, while leaves are falling all around.

She has finished the first section, and is ready to mail it to the next knitter. She used size 11 needles, with two strands of worsted weight acrylic. One color is Dark Sage and the other is a variegated called Fall.

Believe me, you're among friends.

I get confused when people use initials for their family relations. Like when people say DS instead of "son". I mean, COME ON, it's just ONE letter less to type.

But, to each his or her own. Some people just like using those initials.

But, in MY little world, DS means this:

DS isn't much of an abbreviation, but DD and DH are and I use them all in places where that is the convention. (I write them out if at a site that doesn't have a lot of that sort of use.) I throw in "YDS" too for the youngest. :)

However, I have a couple of those DSs too, Sandy -- a black DS Lite and burgundy DSi XL. I have been resisting the 3DSi, but when they come out with a 3D Mario game, I might not have the willpower to not buy one. (Although I didn't buy either of the other ones; both of those were birthday presents from DH, different years, of course. If Mario is out before the end of the month... ;))

I'm trying to be good, but it's getting hard -- you can put me down on Autumn Run too. I'll have to see what it looks like when I get it 'cause I don't think I have the right color yarn right now -- but that is painlessly remedied. I've had an itch to buy yarn for the last couple of weeks but have held back because I don't *need* any. :teehee:

Our snuggles are growing QUICKLY! :woohoo:
Thank you all for staying on top of them, and knitting your sections. :muah:

We will probably start some new ones at the end of October, so we might plan on using some holiday or wintry colors. Start dreaming on wintry names for our snuggles! :)

I have not been saving addresses and I just realized I probably should be. :teehee:
Nah...some of us move, or take long breaks. So, it's best to always check with the next knitter to confirm their address.

Flower Path is ready to move on! Who is next? Susan
Thanks Susan! I just sent you a PM, and copied the next knitter, so we can find out if she's ready.

That's pretty much what I've been doing. I think I'll just keep not saving them and not worrying about it. :teehee: I was just thinking it might be odd to get a blanket *from* someone, then later having to ask them for their address to mail a different one *to* them.

I do feel like it's better to get to a *fresh* address, in any case, and it sounds like that's okay with all of you too. :)

I have finished my section of Autumn Run. Shandeh, do we have another knitter lined up?

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j465/bugsyblacklab/1316824303.jpg

Susan used a deep green (RHSS Hunter Green ??) and a variegated called Fall. Her section reminds me of the northern pine woods.
For my section, I also used Fall and alternated every other row with Tea Leaf and Carrot. This is what the Big Thicket of east Texas looks like in the fall of the year.

Hi!

I'm Geetu (Sihaya on Ravelry), and finally came over here from the RAV group.

I'd love to join in... you can add me to any snuggle that still needs knitters. I do have 2 cats, and everything in my home is covered with cat hair, so I shouldn't be on a list to send the snuggle to anyone with allergies.

I'm looking forward to "meeting" everyone!

cheers!

:teehee:

I volunteered for it earlier, but I don't know if I'm "official". :teehee: You can go ahead and send it to me if it hasn't been promised to someone else. I'm going away this coming weekend and should be able to get it finished either on the way there or on the way back.

I'm the keeper of the spreadsheet, so go ahead and send me a private message with your name and address, so I can add you to the list. I'll put you after sgtpam on the "Autumn Run" blanket. :)

Awesome!
Yes, any worsted weight cotton will work. As with our acrylic blankets, you will hold two strands together throughout. So, two small skeins of dishcloth cotton will be more than enough. And you will have enough leftover to make yourself a two color dishcloth! :)

I knit my section with blue, pink, and white yarns. I'll post a photo soon.

Glad you got the Pink Poodle snuggle!
This will be the first blanket we have finished as a new group.
:cheering: :woohoo: :cheering:

Please take a photo if you can, so we can see how it looks when it's done.

When the snuggle is complete, just take it to a local animal shelter, so it can give comfort to a homeless pet there. And while you are there, ask them if they need more....and see if they have requests on sizes, thickness, etc.

Then, you can go home, and start another snuggle for us, using the needles from Pink Poodle.

Also, I don't normally knit with cotton yarn -- I like the elasticity of acrylic -- but you can put me down if you don't get any other takers. It would be a good way for me to get used to it. I'd like to knit with cotton, I just don't. :eyes:

I'm glad you liked it! :)

Here is the photo of the snuggle after I finished. I started out with Vanna's Choice "Mountain Print" and Red Heart Super Saver "Country Blue" until I ran out of the blue, and I added Vanna's Choice "Olive" in it's place.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6041/6251467719_c531e02e86.jpg

There was just enough color in the snuggle that I thought the color change wouldn't be too misplaced. I couldn't decide between to the blue and the green and this way I got to use both!
