My Grandpa might be going to an assisted living facility sometime in the near future, and I would like to knit him an afghan that he could use.
I'd like to use large knitting needles, and a bulky yarn, but I can't find a pattern that I like. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Join the Lion Brand site if you haven't and when you do a pattern search you can select afghan and bulky yarn. Here's a link, but if you aren't member you might not be able to see it yet.

I really love these cabled ones!

Have you seen these patterns, the first one is from Kraemer Yarns and folds up into a pillow (http://www.kraemeryarns.com/patterns/pdfs/Bearsden.pdf) [which could be useful due to space constraints] and the second one is from Panda Yarns [an Australian yarn company] (http://www.pandayarns.biz/media/freePatterns/12ply_rug.pdf). The second pattern uses 12 Ply yarn equivalent to bulky yarn and size 13 US knitting needles. Also, the pattern was designed for the Magnum 12 Ply yarn which is approx. 203 yards per skein (you might want to try Bernat Softee Chunky as a substitute yarn [http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=softeechunky] (http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=softeechunky%5D). HTH. Good luck with your Grandpa.
