View Full Version : Books on designing

Since I'm unemployed and trying to stay busy w/out going nuts, I thought I would learn how to design knitwear. Are there any books on the subject? For example, last night I started knitting a baby hat I saw in a magazine. After CO, the hat looks more giant than baby! So, I thought I might need to read up on how design a hat so it doesn't look like its made for a giant! (FYI, I followed the pattern--needles, yarn, etc.)
My favorite is Barbara Walker's Knitting From the Top. Also, Teach Yourself Visually: Knitting Design by Sharon Turner.

Yeah...I have the Teach yourself visually one...
But I think the most useful thing I have is Sweater Wizard, and Sock Wizard softwares. They let you do what you need to do to get things together...like right now...I am trying to make a duplicate of my Girl Guide vest!

Thanks everyone. I saw the Visual book at BAM the other day and almost got it. I'll be going back next week, and will pick it up.

Vogue Knitting (http://www.amazon.com/Vogue-Knitting-Ultimate-Book/dp/193154316X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222490994&sr=8-1) is the ultimate reference, IMHO.

That site has very helpful measurements.
I also like Wendy's new book "Custom knits" it talks alot about how to alter existing patterns as well as design on the fly.
