I have been teaching myself to knit and have been trying to knit this shawl for over a month, and I was just about to throw the whole thing away when......
I found this web site, watched the how to on casting on, which by the way I had been doing wrong I had been knitting the cast on stitch. I did my first post and got my first answer and was able to start the shawl. I spent most of the night reading the questions and answers, I have a simple pattern right now but now I know where to come for help I will be able to do a more complicated one in the future.
