STARTING AN ODDBALL BLANKET
if you are the first crocheter on an Oddball Baby Blanket, here is what you need to do.

Before you start, purchase some SOFT 100% acrylic yarn.
(List of recommended yarns for our project (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1106246&postcount=4))

If your blanket is a Preemie Blanket, your yarn should be dk or sport weight, and will be chaining with size F/5 or G/ 6 Crochet hook and chain between 60 and 80 stitches.

If your blanket is a Regular Baby Blanket, yarn should be worsted weight, and will be cast on with size H/8 or I/ 9 Crochet hook and chain between 70 and 90 stitches.

With either blanket, you will need to single crochet every stitch for the first 2 rows to make a nice single crochet border. Then, you can use any design you want. Your crochet work in the first section should measure about 4 1/2 inches when you are finished.

The best designs for our blankets are the ones that are reversible, since our blankets will be used by children and babies. The best designs are the simpler ones such as V-stitches or something that is working in every stitch.

When you finish crocheting your section, do 1 row of all single crochet stitches on the wrong side, so the next crocheter will be able to add their own yarn, and the color change will look nice.
(New colors should always be started on the right side.)

Place the blanket in a zip lock bag with the appropriate Oddball Memo folded up inside the bag with the blanket. (See the attached documents with this post. There is an Oddball Baby Blanket Memo and an Oddball Preemie Blanket Memo.)

You can also include a simple greeting card, and sign your name and list the state you live in, leaving room for the rest of the knitters to do the same. If you include a card, choose one that is generic and happy.
We should not say "Get Well" in the card, because sometimes these children do not get well. Also, avoid any religious statements, because the children and families at the hospital have many different beliefs. I usually choose a colorful card that is blank inside, and write, "We Care about You" on the inside.
If you have scrapbooking skills, you can MAKE a greeting card!

If you choose to include any gifts for the next knitter, please avoid any food products. Our packages occasionally get lost in the mail. (One time a blanket was lost for 6 months before turning up again!)

When mailing the package, please get DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, so we can track the package online. We don't want to lose our precious knitting!

Thank you!

The children's hospital requires that all blankets be knit with SOFT, 100% acrylic yarn. (A small amount of nylon or polyester is okay.)

I jist want to learn to crochet. ANy suggestionS?

If you look on my sidebar under Hooked On Needles (http://www.hookedonneedles.com)Links, you will see a link for Crocheting and one for Video Tutorials. Either of those will connect you to some videos showing the very basics of crocheting. Then you can poke around and see what other crochet ideas and information you could use.

There is so much a beginner can do with crocheting, so just start slowly and get good at the basics, and enjoy it! :happydance:

I will definitely try. I love knitting but feel crocheting can help with finishing off, etc.

Crochet is a great skill and I've seem some patterns that require you to put a crochet border onto I poncho. Plus if you ever knit blanket squares to make an afghan crocheting them is more secure.

I've been crocheting for about 15 years - what do you mean by 'oddball blankets'? I actually try to always have a baby blanket that I'm working on or made. I try to have a boy and girl blanket on hand (people are always having babies). Personally I use Homespun yarn (it's the softest brand for this purpose) and I came up with my own blanket pattern. It's larger than most baby blankets so that they can keep using it as they grow up. My 4 yo DS loves his. And I just found out that my 1 yo neice (who's 600 miles away) won't go to sleep without holding the one I made her to her face. Just love hearing that!

OddBall Blankets are those that get passed from person to person to be worked on. With the knitted one there are 6 knitted section and a border is then added. Here (http://babyoddball.blogspot.com/)is a link to the original Odd Ball Baby Blanket Blog so you can see what they look like.

Hi Christine, I'd be interested in doing some Oddball Crocheted Blankets if we can get a group together. Let me know...
Pam

KnittinMitchie
10-10-2008, 03:13 PM
TY Pam. We will need 6 crocheters plus 1 to do the border. Also we need to decide on what size of blanket we want to do and where we want them to be donated. Some places have very exact sizes and specifications.

Shandeh PM'ed me the sizes for different blankets depending on if we wnat to do preemie or baby size.

PamJ
10-10-2008, 09:42 PM
You answered all my questions without my asking! I hope others will join us. I'm always crocheting blankets to donate, and it would be fun to do some as a group. The knit ones are so lovely. Where are they donated?

KnittinMitchie
10-11-2008, 11:45 AM
When we where doing the knitted ones they went to a hospital out in/near St. Louis, MO ( I think this sounds right) Snowbear delivered all of the wonderful blankets and Shandeh was the mastermind behind it all.

Since we are now divided into regions on the knitted Odd Balls they go to various hospital. The South West region is donating their blankets to HAIN and the West cost is donating to different hospitals. (I work with both of these groups)

 What a great idea! On crochetville.com, I think they do one where people send in granny squares from all over, and someone connects them to finish an afghan (or lapghan, or whatever...) I'd like to participate, but I'm a lefty, so that would be confusing for the next person to continue (unless, of course we were ALL lefties).

KnittinMitchie
10-30-2008, 12:07 PM
no it will work out as I'm a lefty. the person would just attach the yarn at the opposite end from what we do.

How many crocheters do you have now? I'm new to the oddball blankets and wondered how long each crocheter would keep the blanket?

KnittinMitchie
11-03-2008, 11:27 AM
I have 2-3 crocheters right now.

Each person would have 2 weeks to work on the blanket then it would go to the next person.

pcmaya

There are enough of use to start a blanket if you all would like to. I cna do the last section and put the border on os It doesnt have to come bck to me again.

I'll work on getting stuff together as far as guidelines and what not. Also does anyone want to make a button like what is in my signature? It will need to be large enough so I can put it on the guidelines that goes with each blanket while it travels.

also I need a hospital/charity to donate the blankets to. If we can't decide then I'll just send them to Danielle aka secksiebrat and they will be donated to the HAIN (heavenly Angles in Need) hospital where the South West region knitted Odd Ball blankets are going.

Care-Net (http://www.care-net.org/) centers are located around the country and are always looking for nice things for new babies. I used to volunteer at my local center many years ago and I saw how much it meant to the young girls to have something handmade for their new baby.

Just a thought.

Last I knew, they were happy with anything anyone wanted to give, but just to be sure, I will call Monday morning and speak with the director. No sense putting all that love and work into something that no one will use!

The blanket will be worked in Double Crochet (DC) for the ENTIRE blanket.

I have Red, Orange, Yellow and Blue so you all let me know which colors you would like to do. When it comes to the border we can do either black or white.

I just spoke with my local Care-Net and they are very excited about getting some handmade blankets for the babies. Their only requirement is machine wash and dry! Very easy to please!

I would be happy to be the last crocheter on Rainbow Connection and also do the border, then deliver it myself along with any others we might have ready around the same time.

How does that sound?

I guess since I've done these blankets before, I was thinking 2 weeks is quite a long time and crochet goes faster! If anyone else feels it might be overwhelming we certainly don't have to do it that way.

I don't want to overwhelm anyone by any means. So see what others think and then make the decision?

~danielle~

PS You could still mail both to me. I can mail each one out serpartely if everything else would prefer to do one at a time.

pcmaya

These blankets look great! Thank you so much for posting pictures. I had wondered how they were doing! Did we decide where they were going? I know 2 baby's will be very happy!

These two will be going to my local CareNet center which helps moms during pregnancy and after delivery to care for their babies. I used to volunteer there many years ago when my oldest was just a baby, and I know that sometimes having a little handmade something for their babies makes all the difference for these moms.

Butterfly Kisses and Rainbow Connection will be delivered to my contact Rose of my local CareNet office this Wednesday evening. I'll bring my camera along so I can share a picture of our lovely blankets with the lovely nurse/counselor/volunteer who takes such good care of the moms and their babies who need a little extra help. :happydance:

I just wanted to let you all know that, after quite a few attempts to meet with Rose at several different events, finally last night I was able to give her these two blankets! Since it was an evening of recollection at a local church and not a social event, I didn't feel it was appropriate to take a picture of her with the blankets. But rest assured, she has them now and they will be given to two moms in great need of lots of handmade love. Many thanks to all who participated in the making of these blankets!
