Julie,

I will be away from the computer most of the weekend so I thought I would give you a quick up date on my count. I added 4 more for a total of 10 done with 3/4 of one OTN's. Will finish that one up this afternoon in between my bus routes. Will give you new update after the weekend where I should have lots of time to work on them this weekend.

I am using varigated yarn from Hobby Lobby in red, white & blue's along with a christmas varigated yarn too. Mine are nowhere near as inventive as others though. It is the thought that counts not the colors. They will love whatever we send over there. They like to know that we are thinking of them here back at home!

I really like the variegated ones. They turned out nice and stripey even if the yarn isn't super soft. I just used regular red heart for most of these. :blooby:

My misfortune has been fortunate for this mini-sock project for the troops -- We just had a huge snowstorm and I lost power early yesterday morning and didn't get it back until later this afternoon... almost 36 hours!

So what the heck do you do when you're snowed in and have no power so you can't work (I work from home on the computer)? YOU KNIT!!

So between trying to stay warm, finding creative ways of cooking without power on an old wood stove, longing for a hot shower, listening to weather reports on a little bity transister radio... I found time to knit 12 more socks for the troops!!! It kept me from going insane.... and I must say, knitting at night by kerosene lantern with wind blowing 50 mph and snow building up outside so you can't see out the windows is actually not a totally bad experience! ;)

I believe my last count was 12, so Julie, you can make my total 24 now!!

I was most anxious to get electricity and phone/internet service back just to see how this project was going (to heck with work!!)... So I was so happy to finally get on-line tonight and see we hit 300 socks! You guys were really busy while I was out of touch... Way to go!! :cheering:

I'm hoping to keep doing a few more through next week, but will have to catch up on work I missed for two days now, so don't know how much I'm going to get done, but I'm going to try to keep adding to the count. I figured out my Christmas knitting I'd like to do and the finish up some Special Olympic scarves, and think I could devote another week to this project before I need to jump into those things, so you guys are stuck with me for bit longer! :roflhard:

Julie, what is the day that you need them in by? I could go look through the past posts, but our phone/internet has been pretty sporadic since it came back on a few hours ago and I want this post sent before it pops me off-line again and I lose it, so I hope you don't mind me asking again quickly!

Thanks again to all of you... Even if we don't get to 850 in this little KH group, we all deserve a big hand for the huge amount we have done! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Take care everyone!

I'd like to try and do at least a couple, but I've never done anything like this (I've done booties, but they didn't have the "flap", and all those minute details) and I'm afraid I'll mess it up. Are they as difficult as they look? I'm also HORRIBLE at seaming...I still haven't learned how to do it neatly.

I don't want to promise anything and then not be able to follow through....anybody got any advice or tips to give me so I can do my part?

Thanks!!!!!!!!

TrikkeAddict
11-07-2008, 11:55 PM
they're not hard at all - and if you use Jan's pattern you don't even have to do any seaming!!!! I can't seem to find the link to the pattern right now - hopefully someone else will jump in with it.

EDIT: I looked again and found it - http://members.cox.net/janlewis1/Cop...20Stocking.pdf

It's very easy to do - I am using a 3 needle bind off on mine instead of the kitchener stitch, which I don't know how to do. Oh, and I'm doing them on double point needles - I don't know anything about knitting in the round on 2 circulars!!!

kellybigeyes
11-07-2008, 11:59 PM
miccisue.... these stockings don't have a 'flap'. It looks like it, but it's not. The body is knit in stockinette stitch and the top that looks like the flap is garter stitch. They are really easy to make. My seaming isn't that great either, but I'm doing the best I can. I have never knit in the round before, so I am doing my straight and seaming them. Knitting in the round scares me!! So please feel free to join in. We would love for you to help.

Not that anyone asked :aww: ..... but.....Just another way for those who don't like seaming things up or doing kitchener's stitch... this is how I've been doing it.

Do a "double" long-tail cast on -- I'll try to explain.

If you're familiar with the long tail cast on, just do that as usual, but hold two dbl-pointed needles side by side (like a railroad track) and cast the first stitch on one needle, and the second stitch on the other needle, and continue alternating until you have 12 stitches on each needle.

Then you can begin knitting in the round on these 24 stitches, but as you knit, transfer them to two additional needles, so you'll have 6 sts on each needle. It's a little "uncomfortable" at first since the needles are so close together, but I promise, after 3-4 rows, it starts feeling more like knitting in the round and you'll be more comfortable with it. Be sure to give a little extra "tug" on that first stitch of each needle just to avoid a hole or gap on those end stitches.

Then sort of following the first pattern we had the link to (I believe was Jean Greenhowe's pattern), do the increase row of K1, inc in next st around, to 36 sts. Then follow the pattern to the end, but remember that now that you are knitting in the round, all of the purl rows will be knit rows. Other than that, follow the pattern as far as decrease rows, changing colors, etc., and when you get to the "cuff" part, since you're knitting in the round, you'll knit, purl, knit, purl, knit the last 5 rows to get the garter stitch... bind off and you're done!

I hope this helps some of you who don't like seaming and/or don't like or don't know how to do kitchener stitch and/or don't like how a 3-needle bind off looks. It's the way I've done most of my socks after trying all of the above techniques and it's super fast, no seaming, no grafting, just cast on, knit the pattern, cast off, weave in a few ends... simple!

Oh, I also take my last bound-off stitch and instead of pulling the yarn through, I insert a crochet hook, chain 10, then pull through and then make a loop with the chain 10 and tack it down, weave in the end... done!

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.... please feel free to post if it does and I'll try to clarify!

Knit on!

I did a search for posts made by Jan and tried the links... there was one in #90 that did not work. The only one that I could get to work was in post #181. It might be my computer. But anyway... I know that #181 works... and the others don't. I hope this helps.

I didn't try the link from my own post, just copied it from Jan's. I didn't realize that when I copied it that it wouldn't work. Not sure why it doesn't. But I did copy the one from post 181 - I knew the earlier one didn't work.

Hi Everyone!

I'm going to try to post a picture here.... I'm not having a very easy time resizing with my photo software and have to choose a pretty low resolution to get the file size down, so hope it comes out clear enough. If it doesn't come out well, I'll check into Flicker and try it that way when I have more time.

I don't have all of them in the picture, but the varigated, green, and red are the only colors I've been using, so they all look like those in the picture anyway!

Happy Knitting!

Weezie- I use photobucket for all my KH photos. They have an option that you can use that lets you size your photos every time you upload them to photobucket to internet posting size. I can't remember where in the site just now, but it's there, I promise. Then after your photo is uploaded to photobucket, click on the bottom linky for the photo (under the photo) it's the image url that is the same code that KH uses for it's photo posting. Easy peasy! it sounds more complicated than it is, I promise!:muah:

Ok...apparently I'm either a SLOW knitter or I'm extremely busy. I think it's the latter.

I've only completed four thus far (so however many I told you before, just do the math). PCmaya and I went out holidaying today, so I didn't have time to knit anything, but I will be working hard tomorrow and Tuesday, my day off, so fret not.

I have a friend who offered to stuff the stockings I finish, so I have even more incentive to do a bunch.

I knit a couple more today and one last night. I just counted a little while ago and it's 22 now. ;)

Jan- I can't believe how many socks people have knit either:yay:
I wish I knew how many were being sent from Ravelry ,Bev's blog, and 2 yahoo groups  I got 15 e-mails asking for my address. Guess I just have to wait and see how many I get at the end of the month.:wall:

weezie
11-09-2008, 01:41 AM
I agree with Jan... now that I've done so many, the pattern is memorized, so they go a lot faster!

And to everyone -- like Julie said, whether you have time to knit only 1 sock or 100 socks, every sock counts.... and what counts more is that we all did them with love, honor, and respect for our troops, so the only number I'm looking at is our total as a group... and look where we are!!! :woot:

I've done a few more today, but just piled them up and didn't count them, so will get a count again soon and post it... I'll be working on them tomorrow during the Nascar race and football games too. I thought I'd be stopping at about 10 to allow more time for my personal knitting for Christmas, but this is just too much fun and we still need more, so I'm going to try to put in a few more evenings the next week or two and try to keep contributing.

Big hugs to everyone who is participating!!

I dream of mini-socks....

A quick question for all and a request to Julie...

First - For those of us who won't be adding goodies to the socks or sending cards along with them, what do you think of putting just a slip of paper in each stocking with something like: Handknit especially for you with Love, Honor, and Respect... and add our name and address. Do you think that would be okay or not? Do you think it would even be allowed?

Julie -- When you receive all of these socks in the mail, would you post a picture? I don't know how you'd pile them all up or anything, but I'd like to see what a pile of 850 mini-socks would look like! ;)

Thanks,

Weezie-I already started a folder to put pictures in of the packages I get from everyone. And I will DEFINITELY take a picture of all the socks together, even if I have to move the furniture out to make room:roflhard: That reminds me I have to go buy tubs to put them all in so I can keep them organized.
As far as the note goes DEFINITELY add a note as a matter of fact we encourage it.

TrikkeAddict
11-09-2008, 08:24 AM
Julie, I'm sure you were trying to say DEFINITELY!!! I had to chuckle when you misspelled it and it came out defiantly.

I was wondering the same thing yesterday about adding a little slip of paper to each of my socks with a little message and my name. I was going to say something like this:

"I'm sorry that you are so far away from your family and home at this time, but know that you are being thought about by many people and wished safety, peace in your heart, and Happy Holidays!!" What do you think?? It was the first thing I thought when thinking about a message.

Last night I started knitting a preemie hat, for another group that I knit for, and all I kept thinking about was that I should be knitting mini socks to help you guys!!!! I'll put the preemie hat aside and knit more socks today because I can't stand the thought of not reaching our goal - and even if I can only get a few done in a day it all adds up!!! I'll be watching football and Nascar too, so lots of time to knit!!!!

I got 9 more done over the weekend.... total of 33 for me now!

Welcome to the new knitters participating. I think you'll find this group fun and this project rather addicting!

I didn't get on the computer yesterday, so loved seeing the new total this morning when I signed in!!!

Way to go everyone!! :yay:

Susan - I understand your feelings of guilt knitting on something else while this project is still in full swing....I also have other knitting to do, but this project has the closest deadline, so I'm working on it first... then I can finish up the Special Olympic scarves and my Christmas knitting and then go back to my regular year-around knitting for preemies in the NICU and our local homeless veterans' shelter. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking after I get these socks done for our troops overseas, I'm going to make some for the homeless veterans' shelter for Christmas too.

These little things really are addicting... Do you think we're going to need a 12-step program or something when we're all done! :teehee:

Knit away!

Well, I was thinking more that when you felt like it, you'd knit some socks and just save them up. I didn't mean to keep going at this pace! Just more of a background project.:out:

Thanks! She is a beauty isn't she! She's 17.5 yrs old now and has some gray hairs mixed in and her eyes aren't quite as bright, but she's still super soft and quite a love. I just wish over her life I'd kept all the fur I brushed out. She'd make a lovely scarf. :teehee: Here's a full body shot where it's easier to see her eyes and fur.

I was actually thinking the same thing. If they don't get used for the same project they could be used in nursing homes, veterans hospitals, etc.

YAY for the new tally, I was telling them when I left it was close to 300 today and everyone was excited! :woot:

I have some pictures...the kid's pictures have been turned into coloring books since I'm not sure their parents would want me to post full out picts of their kids...this way you just get an outline :teehee:

We only got to go into one of the 2nd grade classes...the other teacher told us to come back on Thurs/next Tues  ...anyways the other class had fun! We got there and the teacher was telling them about Veterans Day...and then we told them about what we were doing...asked them if they knew anyone over there...some did...

We first passed out cards to them and they filled them out and decorated them, then they came back to me where we put their cards in ziplock bags and they stuffed a stocking to put in with it, we then thought hey why not decorate the envelopes :teehee: so they did that and then we had the fun part of matching them back up *mental note for next time there*...They made the envelopes very colorful and they were all so sweet wanting the best for our troops. (even the teacher got in on it and filled out the extra cards and stuffed a few stockings)

The 5 stockings those are Denise's that I filled you in on yesterday...when I dropped off some more cards to the LYS she gave them to me to put in my box here. She also told me she had heard from Bobbie and she has 5 done as well...
So 5 more to the tally.

The green one (size 6 needles) is 3 1/4 inches by 4 1/2 inches. It was made from Cascade 220. The red one (size 6) is 3 3/4 inches by 5 inches. It was made from I Love This Yarn!. The multi colored (size 5) with red top is 3 1/4 inches by 4 1/2 inches. It was also made from I Love This Yarn!. As you see... I went down 1 needle size due to the difference in gauge.

My stockings are not very large: 4 inches from heel to cuff. I used the pattern (http://www.heartstringsfiberarts.com/minisock.pdf) suggested in an early post. I used size 3 needles and scrap yarn with a spot-on gauge of 6 inches per inch.

My mom and brother are coming this weekend to visit. I was thinking of enlisting my brother (he's 11) to sign the cards and stuff the stockings. I noticed Dustin's kids put stuff in a ziploc baggie, is that ok to do? Like put in a card, some chapstick, some other goodies? I was thinking of hitting the dollar store. I just finished number 40 and regretfully have to stop there. I have a lot more knitting and other things to do now before Thanksgiving and Christmas and probably should have stopped a week ago already... but they are so much fun! As a matter of fact, I enjoyed them so much, part of my holiday knitting is making 15 more to send to the doctors I work for. After I get a few other things done, I am hoping to be able to make another 30 mini-socks to stuff with goodies and take to the local homeless veterans' shelter near me that I send hats to every year... time will tell if I'll get that done or not!

I agree with whoever said something about keep on knitting these little socks for next year... They'd be a great little project to just have the yarn handy for when you know you have a little time to spare throughout the year.

I am going to type up some little messages to insert into each sock, but am not going to stuff with anything as far as goodies, etc., as Julie said their group will be doing that... am I correct on that?

Also Julie... I have your address, but is there anything else we need to know about sending them to you? Should we get a signature required receipt or something to make sure you get them and that they can be tracked if you don't get them? Are you available to receive them and sign for them or would that be too much trouble for you?

I am planning on getting the messages tucked in them and box them up to send tomorrow or Friday.

I will definitely be continuing to watch this thread and see how everyone is still doing even though I won't be contributing any more socks... It's been a lot of fun doing this and "meeting" everyone too... what a great group to be a part of! :woot:

Happy Knitting!

My total socks is up to 20 completed now. I plan on mailing my sock soon, so thanks for posting the address. I also plan on sending Becky a couple of dollars to help with the stuffing or the postage to mail all the socks to the troops. I really appreciate all the effort going into this project. I have a son and a daughter in the service and I know first hand how important getting mail is to the troops. Thanks everyone.

I just sent off my package to you this morning Julie, so I didn't see Becky's address until it was too late... But mine are not filled either, just a small slip of paper with a note, so they shouldn't be too much trouble for you to get them to her. I'm sorry, I thought you all were in close vicinity... I probably need to go back and read the original post. :aww:

Now that we're towards the deadline and through this phase of the project, I think you'll get a kick out of my note I wrote to you in the package that says that I think the easy part is over now! :teehee:

If Becky and her group need a little help financially to defray a little of the cost of either providing the goodies for inside the stockings, plastic baggies to put them in, or postage to get them to the troops, please let us know. I am certainly willing to send her a little extra money to help out if it's needed... and some to you too if you need help getting the ones you get sent on to her.

I'm so anxious to see how this all comes together and what our final totals are!

Happy Knitting!

Well, the good news is I have 67 knit - the bad news is that I don't like the looks of one of them, so I tossed it. And the six that I have to seam are being tossed too. I tried again to seam one and it looks awful.

So my total, so far, to send is 60 and I'm knitting like crazy today to finish at least 4 more. I have plenty of yarn and lots of time to get more done before the deadline!!!

The pictures of all your finished socks are fantastic - mine are rather plain in comparison, so I'm in awe of all that can make stripes and different socks!!!

Back to knitting!!!

I FINALLY DID IT!!! Ok, I only have 2..but, I'm quite proud of them. I've been trying to do this since it was first posted and kept giving up because I couldn't get the increase/decrease to work. I've never used needles smaller than a 6 and had a heck of a time.

But, every time I read more updates, I'd try it again and I FINALLY got it right. Sewn up and ready. They are 4" tall and 2" at the ankle but not quite 3" from heel to toe. No pictures...long story, but, I'll try later.

I'm a tight knitter and have to really concentrate to knit loose enough to keep on gauge. I'm using the two needle, sew up the seams pattern (don't know how to use dpns or knit in the round, YET). After I get back from church today, I'm going to try adding 2 sts on each end and see if it makes the bottom 3". Unless anybody else has a better idea???

THANKS FOR DOING THIS! Maybe the pastor knows of another unit that we could do this for? A lot of military units have "sister" units; or, maybe they are working jointly with a sister service.:grphug:

OK, I haven't even finished my first one yet...I'm trying, but it's going slow. Will they be able to use more than 850, or should I just quit?

I feel so bad that I haven't been able to get any done and ready to send in, but it's been a horrible couple of weeks here - I'm fighting an ear infection, hubby had outpatient surgery (he's fine, but stuff like that tends to throw a monkey wrench in schedules), had to work late some..... Add to that I've never done a sock before, and have had to rip it out at least once (am going to use the second pattern if you still need the help and see if that is easier for me), and all my good intentions have gone to hades in the proverbial handbasket.

Again, I'm sorry I haven't got anything accomplished yet. I'm sure by the time I get even one done, there will be others who have gotten you to goal already. If they will use more, I'll keep at it...if not, I'm so sorry I let you down.:verysad:

your own personal goal. Not only socks but cards, candy, notes in the socks, you even got family and friends and even a town involved :woot::hug:. Just a side note to this project, DH & I were talking about how much it costs to send things to the troops. I decided to contact my State Representatives in Washington and ask them why these packages can't go for free considering the amount of money Congress is throwing at the Banks and now maybe Auto Industry. Don't think it will do much good but it will make me feel better. :tap: Feel free to contact yours and give them an earful. LOL

Thanks to you Julie for heading this up and I would be happy (and proud) to stay in the group and knit year-round if you (or Becky or whoever) would like to keep us going.

Thanks to all of you for such a great job!!

We went to the other 2nd grade class today and they decorated the cards and stuffed them. We also had a special stocking made for one of the boys in the class, his dad is over in Iraq. His stocking is the bigger of the two photo below...the kids also signed a card to his dad and in the picture of the boy signing a card that is him writting a note to his dad. He told us he really was wishing that his dad came home for Christmas and he missed him very much

The last picture and only one I didn't change to coloring book is my 2 kids and the little boy of the lady who is helping me. They are at her house stuffing more stockings and putting them with cards.

Yeah.. my 'one' little sock all decked out in a bow got mailed yesterday.

In case you didn't know, I wanted you all to know.. that I am a teacher on a USA Army Post in Germany... many of my students have a parent or parents already over in Iraq or are on their way there within days. A large group is being deployed there from here.. as a matter of fact.. I had dinner in the dining hall on MONDAY this week...

and... our base was providing a big Thanksgiving meal for the troops being deployed so they wouldn't miss Thanksgiving... the officers and upper enlisted were in their dress uniforms serving the younger troops. I was so glad that I 'accidently' got to be a part of their special meal.

***AND.. my own art students have been working on the 1,000 cards that I'll mail to a friend in Iraq (and also probably to Afghanistan) to distribute to the troops deployed there too. I've been doing the card project for the past 18 years- because we always have troops deployed from their friends/families and homes.

Just a quick note to say good job again to everyone... and to see if I created my signature line correctly....;) Sorry, but I'm new to this sort of stuff and just wanted to check and see if I added the mini-sock for the troops button (or whatever it's called) correctly.

Thanks!

I added some little jingles to the 3 I finished and sent them off to Becky today. I only have a camera phone, but here they are. Once I got the hang of it, I really liked doing them. I'll definitely keep doing them so we'll have them for next year! Maybe next year I'll try real socks, too.:teehee::knitting:
