I'm relatively new to knitting. I want to make a hat and a pair of socks. I don't really know where to begin. I want to make an adult size of each. I tried using a circular needle for the hat but it looks odd. I scrapped that project. I tried a sock on dpn, but I don't know what I'm suppose to do to shape the heal. and toes. I have been looking on the web, but I haven't found the right site to help me. Can anyone please help. I just want to learn something basic.

There are several ways to knit in the round for hats and socks. Here's a link to the video section here in KH.

Here is another that has good still pictures. It shows you the correct way to hold your needles so you are knitting on the outside of the project.

This is the probably the best sock pattern for learning to make socks and use DPNs. You don't have to know how to make the heels or toes yet, just follow the pattern and it'll make more sense. It helps too if you use a heavier weight yarn to learn before using fingering weight and tiny needles.

Please feel free to come to the How-to-Questions Forum when you need help. No ones knitting looks perfect especially when they are new.
