I bought a very expensive 100% cashmere sweater (Malo is the brand) for my husband a few years ago. It's in beautiful shape but it's really stretched, esp the sleeves, which are hanging way down now. Will cashmere shrink or felt. I thought I'd try it in the sink and watch it. don't really want to felt it though. It's so pretty but so big.

I think cashmere will felt very easily, though I do not have much experience with it. It will probably shrink easily too, so proceed with caution.

Yes, you can shrink cashmere. However, from what I've been told it won't be very attractive (pilling, shape distortion, and thickness will occur) afterwards. You could try doing the sleeves buy hand to control the process but it might not result in a satisfactory end.

:aww: frankly, I have a hard time NOT shrinking expensive sweaters!

But it sounds like someone hung it on a hanger - given that the sleeves would fit a gorilla now. Try dampening it (or washing it in wool soap) and laying it flat to dry. Bunch it back into it's proper shape, as best you can.

Thanks all! for the tips. Yeah, I think I'll just wash it gently in a sink with some Eucalan and try and push it into shape. It really stretched although it was never hung on a hanger! thanks again

Could you hem the sleeves?

I am having the same problem with my cashmere sweaters too but I lost some weight and now they are too big for me. I thought about washing them to shrink them but now I think I won't. I don't want them to ball up. One is so very big that it's my nightshirt now, how luxurious is that!!!!???? The other ones I think I will just wear with a thick t-shirt unerneath.....

Hartley,
As intimidating as this may sound, have you thought about recycling the yarn from the biggest sweater. Here are a few links I found through Google using the words "recycle sweater yarn."

I even think there is a recycle yarn group on Yahoo and you could probably find out more on the subject on Ravelry or here if you would like to try this technique. Why should all that lovely cashmere be relegated to simply being a nightshirt.
