Hi all - I can't decide which scarf pattern to use to knit a scarf for my MIL, so I was hoping to hear your opinions. She wants a scarf to go with a maroon coat, so I chose this yarn (colorway 10):

I have three patterns I'm trying to choose from. I'm posting the link to each pattern (if it's online) and pictures of a test swatch which I knitted. I knitted each of them on size 13 needles.

1. Reversible Plaited Scarf (from Ravelry)

2. Misty chunky ribs and ruffles scarf (I added an extra repeat of this so the scarf would be wider) http://www.mistialpaca.com/downloads/ribs_ruffles_scarf.pdf

3. Villandry Lace Scarf

Anyways, I just can't decide which pattern shows off the colors of the yarn and is unique but still appropriate for an adult woman. Any and all comments and opinions are appreciated.

I like the top two. I just bought yarn for something called Curvaceous which is a cabled scarf that reminds me of the top one. The yarn is Rowan's Colourscape Chunky from Kaffe Fassett. Anyway, I think either of the first two show the yarn well. Good luck!

I think the first one looks intriguing and different. I'd go with that...

Thanks everyone. I liked the first one a lot, but was worried that it was too 'out there' for an adult's scarf since it looks like a long braid. However, I wanted to be sure that it was sort of unique and original and wouldn't just look like something you can buy at a store.

I really like the first one too. But I have to say I have made lots from the 2nd pattern and it is my new stitch pattern of the moment. I have made it from lots of different types of fibers and it always works up wonderfully!! Plus it's SO quick - which is really important to me this time of year!
