View Full Version : Taking the plunge....

Yup... I'm taking the plunge.
I bot a pattern, some yarn and some needles from our local knitting store.
Enough of this scarf and hat knitting, I said. Time to knit a sweater! LOL!
I've started my swatch for gauge - 20 sts X 30 rows = 4" st.st.
The sweater is a little one for my latest grandson, 4 months old. It's a pullover in garter st and the pattern is written in big letters and very clearly and the lady at the wool store told me I can come in anytime for any help if I need it.
So I'm all set...
Wish me luck - it's been a long, long time...:aww:

A baby sweater is my choice of a place to enter the world of sweaters. It's so nice you have "live" help. This should go very well. Let us see it when it is done.

GOOD FOR YOU, Tema! I'm proud of you!
And especially for swatching!!!

You are approaching this in exactly the right way:
1) a design that isn't too complex
2) a sweater that isn't too large
3) a well-written pattern
4) swatching

Exactly the same thing I did!

So happy to report that the sweater is coming along swimmingly... LOL!
The back is done and the front is well underway.
I love the colours of the yarn...
Now I know I'm feeling like it's working up fast but I also know from experience that the sleeves can take longer than either the front or the back... but I'm looking forward to finishing the front and getting to the sleeves...
Thanks everyone for your support for my new venture!

The front has turned out to be a bit of a mess... not the patterns fault... my own...
I misread the darned thing and will soon be tinking my heart out... but I haven't lost hope yet... LOL!

Good grief!
Just call me 'tinker'... think I'm becoming an expert at un-knitting... LOL! (too terrified to frog ;) )
Anyway, the knitting is finally done. Stayed up til 2 last night unable to put the last sleeve down....
Next comes the blocking and then, evidently, I sew the right shoulder to the back and then p.u. and knit stitches for the neck... can't wait for that.
I have only a small amount of yarn left... but I think it will be enough but I doubt I'll even have a smidgen left when the thing is finished.....
Knitting is so exciting... doncha' think? LOL!

That's so cool TEMA! Congrats on your first sweater. Tinking can be frustrating, but I know for me, it's often how I learn the most from a project.

Post a pic when you're done, I'd love to see it! :)

Sounds like you are doing great. You should experiment with frogging on a sample. It is not that hard and is a time saver when you have a lot to take out. My knitting guru taught me to get those stitches back on the needle anyway you can and then to work them through the back loop if you accidentally picked them up backwards. I was so happy to learn that trick. Frogging became much less blood pressure raising. LOL

Sounds like you are doing great- can't wait to see it! I actually think you learn a lot from un-knitting, so even though it's annoying, it's not wasted time. :)

It's all done...!
Honestly, once the blocking was done, it was clear sailing...
I learned so much with this one little sweater...
I finally learned how to pick up and knit.. I can't believe that it as simple as it is. All the time, in my 20's, knitting away... I had no idea how to do this and just picked up, knitting them all once they were on the needle... ugh! I think that's why I stopped knitting... LOL!
Of course, there wasn't this great site available at the time either... :muah:
Tinking is not a waste of time... LOL!
Running out of yarn can be a scary proposition... I did the neck a little differently because of it...
I learned I love to knit... or I wouldn't have stuck with all that tinking...
I learned there is more than one way to do the cuffs and neck edge other than k1p1...
I learned that, no matter what you think it will turn out like... it doesn't usually but that's not always a bad thing... LOL!
I am now planning on a very easy sweater for myself.... Think I better or the enormity of the situation will prevent me from tackling such a large thing...
Thank you to all of you that posted and spurred me on... I needed that at times...

Darn.... the pic won't post... says it's too heavy... I'll try to get it smaller and come back....

I feel very dumb... I have no idea how to get this pic accepted and I have no idea how to make the pic smaller... Can anyone help me with this...?
Thanks,

Great job! :yay: Congratulations on finishing your first sweater. It looks very nice, and the colors are lovely. Keep it up, and please post your progress on your next sweater.

And look how much you learned! I think that's the best part of any knitting project--learning new stuff, and building confidence in your skills.

Thanks for the cheering section... LOL!
I have to admit that I am more proud than I should be to have finished this little fellow.... but, be that as it may, it's a good thing it worked out in the end.
Now I'm looking for sweater #2... this time for myself.
I've ordered the yarn....
Good grief! :passedout:

Talked to my daughter today. The sweater arrived yesterday. She says it's a little big but I think that's good. He's a growing boy, that baby of hers...
So I'm happy!
