OK, so being that this is the year of the stashbusting for me, I am planning on using a whole bunch of this pure alpaca (http://www.elann.com/productdisp.asp?NAME=elann.com+Peruvian+Pure+Alpac a&Season=&Company=&Cat=ALLY&ProductType=5&OrderBy=&Count=31) I have in my stash to make a sweater.

I've knit with alpaca blends before but never with pure alpaca. Can I get some advice on the type of patterns that this yarn would be suited to? Would it work for a cabled sweater? What do you all think?

You might knit up some swatches in cable patterns to see how they would work. I've heard it stretches, so you might wash and block them and when they're dry, hang them. Hanging a swatch simulates how the knit is worn in a sweater.
