View Full Version : New knitter has question

I don't know how to start a new skein when the old one runs out. I'm making a small baby blanket with knit stitches only (because that's all I know how to do) and I don't know how to switch yarns between plain yarn and the fuzzy one I'm using to make a "stripe". Can someone give me really simple easy-to-follow instructions including which hand holds the new yarn, etc. I really messed up when I tried yesterday.

Here (http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips) Amy shows some great techniques on the videos. There are quite a few methods for joining yarn, depending on the fiber, the colors and your personal preferences. See if the videos can help you and if not - we're always here to help

The easiest way to start a new yarn is to leave a tail about 6 inches long and just start knitting with it. The edge will be loose, but you can fix that at the end. I sometimes tie the to ends together loosely just so it helps hold it till I weave in the ends.

There's nothing special about how you hold your hands or anything. Just be careful that you're knitting with the end connected to the skein and not the tail. (Don't ask how I know..:shifty:)

There's some info here for different joins if you want to have a look.
