Don't know what they look like, but these are done with short rows:

I don't know if http://www.groupepp.com/dishbout/kpatterns/petal.html is the sort of thing you're looking for or not...?

What do you mean 'swirl around'? Here's one that might be what you're looking for.

makes me think of these placemats from the book "Felt It." You could make them smaller and call them coasters.

HERE (http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2009/02/tunisian-short-row-dishcloth-video.html) is a pattern that might work if you want to learn Tunisian Crochet. Just make the starting chain maybe 6 or 7 and see how the size works out.

The knitlist website went down a few years ago, but you can put the link into the 'way back machine' (http://we.archive.org) and it should come up. May take a few minutes though.

Try looking up any tutorial or pattern for a top down hat. It's the same principle. You just stop increasing when the "coaster" looks big enough. I'd suggest pulling the tail after the first round or two to close up the hole.

There are a bunch (http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/coasters.php) on Knitting Pattern Central. And there are several pages (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#photo=yes&craft=knitting&view=captioned_thumbs&sort=best&pc=coaster) in all shapes and sizes on Ravelry.
