View Full Version : natural dyes

I've been getting into dying yarns for a while and love the ability to control color before you knit it into something. :) But, I want to get a different texture with my yarns. I was thinking of moving into all natural dyes that I could add in to see what type of effect it would have on my yarn. Does anyone know some of the best ingredients to put together to experiment with this? And, if I wanted a plant instead of the powder, how I would I prepare it into a dye?

There are wonderful books on natural dying. Most any type of flower, leaf, bark, roots will give some sort of color.

There are different mordants that will affect the outcome of the final color. One of the easiest things to dye with is water/vinegar & onion skins....

Here's a post that I wrote last fall. It includes dye sources and instructions. I'd start with onion skins, and soon, there should be enough fern "fiddleheads" to work with. Let me know if I can help in any way, and have fun!http://danceswithwool.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/its-fall-plants-for-dyeing/
