I'm thinking of knitting this:

I'm at a loss to figure out what yarn might work with this. I went through Yarndex, but a lot of those look expensive. I thought maybe Lamb's Pride Bulky...The gauge for the pattern is 12 stitches to 4 inches and 22 rows to 4 inches, but the needle size is an 8...which I don't get. You'd think, for a bulky yarn at this gauge, you'd want at least a 10.

Has anyone knit this before, and if so, what yarn did you use?

That's a cute sweater. That needle size seems like it would make the fabric to dense to me, too. :??

Anyway, there are lots of bulky yarns that aren't expensive. Here's a few - I don't know the gauge on these w/o looking them up, but if they are close they will probably work.

Lion Brand Jiffy
Bernat Softee Chunky
Wool-ease Chunky
Patons Shetland Chunky solid and tweed
Bernat Alpaca Natural Blends

The above are all at local stores like Michaels, Joann, and Hobby Lobby as well as online.

This is also a good one you can get these online or an LYS.
Plymouth Encore Chunky

There's also some at Knitpicks and Elann that are inexpensive.

Ideally, I'd like it to be 100% wool or some other natural fiber.

Then Elann and Knitpicks are good choices for inexpensive yarns.

Elann has a lot more if you're will to use a blend. The one you named first is also a good choice.
