Good morning everybody. I have decided to knit covers for 2 -18inch :knitting: square couch pillows, that I have. What I can't figure out is how do you calculate how many stitches you need to cast on? I am a beginner knitter.:knitting:

with the yarn you want to use knit up a small test swatch. count how many stitches you get in a n inch then multiply this by 18 to see how many stitches you would need. I would probable add at least an extra inch worth of stitches for seaming and to alow for the curve of a cushion.

eg. in your swatch you have 5 stitches per inch. 5 x 18 = 90 stitches. i might cast on 100 to be sure.

For your test piece, co about 20 sts and knit about 3". That gives you a better idea how many sts/inch you get. Then multiply that time 18" and add a couple for the seams.

On the same project, do you just guess how many skeins it will take, or is their some kind of formula? Thanks so much for answering my other question
