View Full Version : Wobbly Spindle?

I have an old drop spindle that I use, but I've realized that it is wobbly and my yarn is coming out "lop sided" meaning that there are thicker parts of the wool, then thinner parts. I tried turning it and realized that it leans to one side a bit. Does anyone know if there is a way to fix the imbalance, or maybe it is my technique?

The uneveness of your yarn is probably more due to your drafting than the spindle. Practice, practice practice!!

yes, i second that the yarn being lop-sided is probably due to the drafting.
if the whorl is loose you may be able to push and adjust or glue it back in place?

It doesn't matter much if a spindle is wobbles a bit; it can still spin perfectly good yarn. But if it bothers you a lot, check to see that the hook is perfectly upright and doesn't lean to one side or the other. If it does, try bending it the tiniest bit with your fingers or a pliers -- be very gentle; you don't want to break the hook.
This might help reduce the wobbling. But it won't really help with the thick-and-thin yarn you're getting. That's a matter of learning to draft evenly. Go slow and hold the clump of fiber loosely. And (this must be getting boring) practice, practice, practice.
