I started this on 3/31 and finished today (12 days total), when I couldn’t find the yarn I needed for my next project. You can find the free pattern here (http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/PATTshetlandshorty.html).

I used less than two skeins (170 grams to be exact) of South West Trading Company Bamboo…yarn I bought in Las Vegas last year.

I made the second size listed on the pattern, and it’s a great fit! I used sizes 3 and 2 needles instead of those recommended in the pattern. I never actually did a gauge swatch (bad girl, I know), so I felt like going up a bit would be fine.

I have to say that I am so pleased and surprised. Sure, I’ve made socks, baby hats, and other cute things. But sweaters have always scared me. Completing this project, with the success I achieved, has bolstered my self-confidence. I will definitely be more inclined to take on a more intricate “wearable” item in the future.

On to the pictures!

The bamboo was soft and glided through my fingers...a joy after some of the other yarns I've knit with. It was a bit "thready" if that makes sense. This pattern has mostly yo's and k2togs, so I found myself with extra little yo's from the threading. I caught them on the next pass through.

Thank you for all of the nice things you've had to say about it.

I wore it over a sleeveless dress this morning to church. I never have clothing "accessories" to dress things up, so this was a nice change of pace.

My daughter's friend was over yesterday when I was modeling it, and she thought I had bought it! That made me feel so good.

That is just adorable. Shame on you for not swatching. LOL Actually I'm just jealous that you had such good luck without bothering. What no ripping and redoing? You were very fortunate. A perfect fit. It looks just great on you.

Ugh...I hate swatching. I do it for socks and NEVER get gauge. Ever. I know about how much bigger my gauge runs, so I can wing it from there.

I did have to tink back a few rows a couple of times. This pattern is really easy, and you know, by the even rows, if you've made a mistake. All of those yo's drive you crazy but are easily fixed.

I was going to say I hate swatching. But I don't hate swatching so much as I hate never learning my real gauge that way anyway. I do it and then usually my project becomes another swatch. I am just not a very good machine; my knitting doesn't run the same size all the time. I've thought a good knitting name for me would be "Big Swatches". LOL

I'm glad you had such good luck on this project.

You totally could! If you can pick up stitches, you can do this pattern! If you can't, there are some great how-to videos!!

It's all knit as one piece, so there's NO seaming!!!

That is a very very nice garment. What is next on the needles?

(I just nipped to Knitty to look at the original..... yours is streets ahead of their one, so much nicer.)

Oh gosh...you made me blush!!!

:aww:

As soon as I finished this project, I jumped into another...

I'm currently working on an Amigurumi Dolphin (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=23148456), but I just ran out of yarn and can't find it locally. Rabbitrescuer is going to buy me a skein at her Michael's. I'm so close to the end...ugh. It will be a gift for a lady who works at my children's high school.

I'm anxious (and I'm a monogomous knitter so I have no other projects OTN), so I cast on for the Swallowtail Shawl (http://www.evelynclarkdesigns.com/portfolio.html#gypsy), using Malabrigo Lace (Forest) that dimpledapple sent me recently.

It's my first shawl, and all of the charts have me scared stiff, but I've managed to figure out how to execute the second chart. I'm addicted. Pure and simple. I sure hope we get to watch movies in the classes I'm subbing for tomorrow.

Nathalie, that is SO stunning! :inlove: I have to say that I looked at that pattern a million times and never thought twice about it but I LOVE the one you made. Maybe it's just that I think it is more attractive in a darker color. Now I'm thinking twice.
