View Full Version : Best acrylic or washable yarns?

I want to start a blanket for our local chapter of Project Linus. However, blankets need to be machine washable/dry-able and they do not accept any wool. I've only ever used natural fibers and I don't know anything about different brands of acrylics. Are there any that anyone would recommend, particularly for making blankets for young children or teenagers that would be soft and comfortable and also durable after washes?

My favorites are Red Heart Soft yarn, Caron Simply Soft, Bernat Satin, Patons Candiana, I love This Yarn... Caron One Pound is not quite as soft, but not scratchy either.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. Very inexpensive is Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn - mucho soft. A little more expensive is Berroco Comfort, which I haven't used but have heard it's very soft. THese days I'm liking Bernat Berella 4. I don't find it exceptionally soft but it's very sturdy and seems like it will hold up well. I also like Vanna's Choice. Joann's now sells Deborah Norville Serenity yarns, another one I haven't tried but was able to pet and I found it soft.

I really like Caron's Simply Soft. They have a "brites" line that has some really fun colors for kids and teenagers.

Oooo I forgot about Vanna's Choice. It comes in a ton of colors.

Caron's Simply Soft is, well, very soft. I wonder if it holds up to washing well.

I'm making a keyhold scarf with Deborah Norville Serenity Yarn and it works up great and is so soft.

I've made several sweaters and blankets out of simply soft for friend's babies. They have all held up great! I know one sweater I knit several years ago is being used right now on the second son.

Caron Simply Soft yarns (all are soft and nice to work with)
Red Heart SOFT
Bernat Satin and Softee baby and chunky

If you don't mind buying online James C. Brett marble is very soft and stripes very nicely. It all washes great.

I agree with everyone's recommendations so far, and would like to recommend another one that I've fallen in love with recently:

Red Heart Kids (http://www.coatsandclark.com/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=9&page_id=2493696&query=red+heart+kids&hiword=HEAR+HEARD+HEARING+HEARTED+HEARTS+heart+kid s+red+)

It's softer than Red Heart Super Saver, and comes in nice bright colors. I really enjoy knitting with it, and it makes a good sturdy fabric.
