Hello forum, I need some help. I am buying a set of circular needles and want to know from the group what length to buy. I am a beginner to intermediate knitter. As I a guy knitter, I tend to like to knit with larger needles and thicker yarn. I focus on making hats, scarves and socks so I am thinking about purchasing a 29" set of needles. I have run into problems in the past with too long and too short issues, please advise: Do the 29"'s sound like a good solution?

Thanks
Troy

Personally I find if you are going to use the circulars for small diameter knitting such as socks and hats, then you are probably going to be magic looping, in which case 40 inches is better.

I agree. I even purchased the 60" which comes in handy when knitting sweaters in the round.

For hats knit in the round, I think 29" is a bit big. Even 24" is kinda big (my head is only 20" around). 16" is probably what you need for hats, unless you're doing Magic Loop. For scarves, 24" works well, however, if you're knitting them lengthwise, you're going to need at least 40". I've never made socks but again, if you mean to do magic loop with the circulars, you'll need at least 40" for that as well. You may need different lengths for different projects. This is where the interchangeable sets come in so handy. :knitting:

29-32" is a good size. You can do ML or a modified single loo (http://sites.google.com/site/purplesagedesigns/techniques-1/single-loop-not-magic-loop-knitting-in-the-round)p version, with that length for hats. Socks too. 40" is just too much cord and you don't need that length for working something wide and flat. I make 42" sweaters on 29-32" circs and find that's perfect for them.

It depends on what method you choose to knit.

hats -

Single needle set in the round - 16" plus either another one for the top or DPNs in the same needle size.

Magic loop - at least 24" for modified ML or 32"+ for standard ML. Suzeeq likes shorter ones, some people prefer longer.. it's personal preference.

29" would work for various things though maybe not all. That's why many of us use an interchangeable set.

I'd never seen modified loop before, that's a new one for me

I unvented it about 30 years ago when I wanted to knit 30 sts in the round and all I had were 29" circs. That's about all that were available at that time I guess, though maybe if I'd gone to the yarn store they would have had more exotic lengths...

Learn magic loop or the two circs method and then you won't care how long they are. Buy long ones and just use the appropriate technique for what you want to make.
