View Full Version : I need help with a chart!

I started on this Flora Dress http://soknitpickygallery.blogspot.com/2008/06/flora-dress.html for my daughter, I am knitting it in size 2. But this is my first time knitting with a chart and I am a little confused on one part...
Chart A has a few cables, and I am confused whether I need to follow each cable symbol ones or twice. I did it ones for each symbol and it looked messed up so I unraveled it. Now I am knitting each symbol twice and it STILL looks messed up!! It would be nice if someone could explain this to me. This is the cutest dress I have seen so far and I want it to be perfect!!
Thanks so much.:muah:

When you work a chart, the symbols tell you what you'll end up with. So to work the cables, you work each one once over the 2 stitches. Work the entire chart around the dress (which is absolutely adorable!) however many times you need for your size.
So on the first cable row, for example, you'd
P1, k4, cross the next 2 stitches, k2, slip 1, k2, cross 2, k4, p1
Then repeat all around

Thank you Ingrid for your prompt answer. I'm sitting here staring at the screen, waiting for an answer cuz I can't wait to continue knitting since this is the only project I have going :)
...but I still don't get it. So does that mean the description of the symbol changes since the symbol crosses over two boxes on the chart instead of one?
Does that mean that I would be slipping two stitches onto the cable needle instead of one, sl 1 pwise from LH needle, and knitting TWO from cable needle? :??

The total uses 2 stitches. So for the one that leans to the right, you'd slip a stitch to the cable needle and hold it in back, knit one, knit one from the cable needle.
For the one that leans to the left, slip one to the cable needle, hold it in front, knit one, knit one from the cable needle.
They're not really cables, per se, but crosses of two stitches. It'll create a little twist, not a very noticeable cable.

I AM SO LOST!!!
I understand the cables/twist, what I was doing in the beginning was right. But the problem is my stitches are not lining up right. I seem to be following the chart exactly as it says but my knit stitches keep popping up here and there randomly, instead of lining up straight. What am I doing wrong??? The pattern says "Work Chart A 10 (I am following the pattern for a size 2) times across sts." Does that mean I am working from right to left starting from #1, moving on to #2, then to #3 and so on, and then repeating the chart 10 times or am I supposed to work row #1 10 times, row #2 ten times and knitting each row that way? I hope I am not being too confusing...
But that's not all. I have 110 stitches on the needle and if you count up the stitches on the chart, they count up to 211 sts (not counting the 2 yarn overs). That's not even two rows. I think that is why my stitches are not lining up right.
In conclusion, I really hope someone can help me figure this out once and for all.
Thanks in advance

I think I figured out your problem.
See where there are numbers in the first row of the pattern? Those are increases, and the dark spaces are no stitch. So that row would read:
p1, K1, Kpk into one stitch, k2, kpkpk into one stitch, k2, kpk into one stitch, k1, p1
Each repeat in row 1 uses 11 stitches, but after row 1, each section is increased to 19.
If you still have the 110 stitches that you started with, then that's why things aren't working on this round.
BTW, each row is repeated the 10 times all the way around, then you do row 2, etc.
