View Full Version : Just want some sympathy here

So, it's official. I'm screwed. I just did the math and calculated that I have used 77% of the yarn stashed for a project which is only 53% completed. And I can't find a ball band, anywhere.... And I was too dumb to write the dye lot down because I was SO confident I had bought extra yarn.

:waah:

Oh I am soooo sorry. :-(

Yikes. That hurts.

Only one thing to do..... plan another project for the yarn that is more than covered by the amount you have.

Then go get the PROPER amount of yarn (+ 20%) for this project... which you'll start in a month or so, once you've cooled down.

So Sorry!

did you put the dyelot on your ravelry stash page?

Is that the project you want some sympathy for? If so why not use what yarn you have left and put an edging on it? It may not be as big as you wanted but it will still look nice. You have done beautiful work so far. The alternative is to get some contracting yarn in a lighter shade but not too light and add to what you have already done. Look on the bright side, you can frogg it and use the yarn for something else or finish it another way.

Poor you, but DID you put the dyelot on ravelry?

I have calmed down a lot, though, and I think that what I will do is:

1) Finish the centre pannel and work the mitred increase rounds--I have more than enough yarn for that.

2) Buy another ball (screw the dye lot) to work the edging. By my calculations I should be able to squeak the edging out of 1 skein.

Here's a picture of the pattern:

In answer to the questions, no stupid me I did not put the dye lot on Ravelry, as I bought the yarn and started the project before I joined Ravelry and by the time I added the details to Ravelry the ball band was already missing. Plus even if I knew the dyle lot it's been a while since I bought the yarn so I don't know how easy it would be to get more of that lot.

I knew I was in trouble because when I joined Ravelry and took a look at other people who had knit the same shawl in this yarn, most of them used more yarn than the pattern called for.

So sorry to hear that, been there done that.
I made that shawl just a few months ago and I love it. I made it with lace weight yarn and ended up using just about what Eunny Jang estimated in the pattern. I used Knit Picks Gloss lace in Agean which is a merino/silk blend. It wasn't until I was almost done that I looked at the picture again and realized I had used almost the same color as she had.
Mine ended up being plenty long after blocking so shortening it a bit may not hurt at all.

I think your right that it could maybe have been shortened, but I've already grafted the two halves together and I'd have to seriously shorten it to make the edging go all the way around. I've seen some people's versions on Ravelry who didn't knit the edging or knitted a smaller edging, but the main thing that attracted me to the pattern in the first place was the edging so that seems to be kind of missing the point for me then. I am just going to do the edge in a different dye lot and hopefully it won't be too ugly.

...or, you could put out a wish list, and maybe one of us may have it and send it to you.

"I am just going to do the edge in a different dye lot and hopefully it won't be too ugly."

The slight difference in dye lots just may add an enhancement to the beauty of the pattern.
