The pattern reads (baby duffel coat - sleeve)

With 4mm needles, cast on 35 sts.
K 17 rows.
Change to 3 1/4mm needles.
K 16 rows.
Change to 4mm needles.
Inc and work into garter st 1 st at each end of the next row and every foll 8th row until there are 53 sts.
Cont straight until sleeve measures 24cm from cast-on edge, ending with a wrong-side row.
Mark each edge of last row with a coloured thread.
Work a further 8 rows.
Cast off.

could someone please explain this to me... The part i am most stuck with is from "Inc and work into garter..." to " Cast off" lol Please help, I am knitting this for my nephew and he is growing so fast, I'm afraid that by the time I finish it wont fit!! lol

Thankyou :knitting:

It's worded backwards, try this -

Inc 1 st at each end of the next row and every foll 8th row until there are 53 sts. You don't need to worry about the 'work into garter st' part, just inc at both ends of the row.

Then after you have 53 sts, just knit it without increases until it's 24cm from the cast on. Mark the sts at the ends of that row with another yarn, a safety pin, paper clip, and do another 8 rows and bind off.

hi suzeeq,

I'm very new at this so can i ask again...

you mean

1. Increase one stitch at beginning of the current row, knit across and increase one stitch at the end of the row.

2. Knit 7 more rows in the garter stitch

3. For the 8th row, increase one stitch at beginning, knit across and increase one stitch at the end of the row.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have added enough stitches to end up with 53 stitches on your needle at the end of a row.

also what is meant by mark the sts do i keep them on the needles with the other yarn in them? sorry...

do you know if there is an example of this shown somewhere?

thank you for your patients - amiee

1, 2, 3 and 4, yes.

After you've knit to the right length, mark the end sts by tieing another piece of yarn around them or putting some sort of removeable marker on the sts themselves. This will be used as a 'landmark' later on. Then knit another 8 rows. I don't know where it shows this, but you just use a length of another colored yarn, or some thread and poke them in the sts at the end of that row and leave them there while you knit all the sts including the end ones.
