Hi everyone! :waving:

Every year, for New Year's Eve, I host a discussion in our forum to bring in the New Year.
This year, we will be offering PRIZES! Woo Hoo! :cheering:
Since I have been blessed with such a large stash, I'll be offering some skeins of yarn, and a few knitting booklets. (Sorry I don't have any crochet books to offer, but I'm sure the yarn can be used by everyone.)

To be eligible for the prizes, just join in our discussion between 11:30 & 2:30 AM (Eastern US times), and tell me (Shandeh) to add you to the drawing. At 12:00 and 12:30 for North American time regions (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific), I will draw a name out of a hat to determine the winner. The prizes will be random, so it's the luck of the draw what you'll get! (See prizes here (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1268634&postcount=7).)

Winners do not have to be online at the time of the drawing. I will notify you by private message in the forum if you are a winner.

I will also ask a few quiz questions (about Knitting Help) at various times of the night for more prizes. FUN! :woohoo:

http://bestsmileys.com/party/1.gif http://bestsmileys.com/fireworks/5.gif http://bestsmileys.com/party/4.gif

We will use this discussion thread, starting at 11:30 PM (Eastern US Time) on December 31st. I will stay in the discussion until 3:30 AM (Eastern US Time), until the New Year is welcomed all over the US.

The rest of you can have the New Year's Eve Party in your part of the world as well. Just log in to the forum, open this discussion, and start typing. We want to see the KH New Year all over the planet!
http://bestsmileys.com/globes/4.gif

Feel free to post photos of your party, as well as photos of your current knit and crochet projects in the works.
Happy New Year 2010!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you!

Just a reminder that tomorrow night is our New Year's Eve party! If you plan on joining us, bring your knitting and crochet project, and your glass of bubbly to your computer. We'll welcome 2010 together, and have fun "talking" to each other.

I'll be knitting on some bulky slipper socks during our party. I need them to keep my feet warm this winter!

I'm using the "Red Hot Slipper Socks (http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?search=Search&searchText=red+hot+slipper&craft=0&categoryKey=Any&subcategory=Any&size=Any&edition=Any&cost=Any&componentCategoryKey=Any&yarnClass=Any&searchType=0&I2.x=24&I2.y=11)" pattern from the Lion Brand website to make my bulky slippers. I gave a pair to one of my sons for Christmas, and he loved them! So, I'm making several more pairs for family members....and for myself! I'm just grabbing different bulky yarns in my stash to make them. fun!

What will you be making, Pam?

Actually...I need to make myself slippers, too! I ended up giving away all of the ones I made this year...even the ones I was wearing!:teehee:

I'll probably do the pocket book pattern...I really like it and wouldn't have to learn a new pattern.....or mess it up when it gets a little late!:???:

I've just updated our KAL to a PARTY! :cheering:

We'll still be knitting and crocheting, but I've decided to offer prizes this year, just to make it more fun. I hope this will get more of you involved! (Read about how to join here (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1267656&postcount=1).)

Some of you might be out and about, having your own party, but I'll be stuck at home as usual. (My hubby is a restaurant manager.) I'm sure there are others of you who will be at home like me. So, let's spend New Year's Eve together, knit and crochet, and have fun.

Just so you'll know, here are the random prizes I'm giving away for our party:

Sandy, this sounds like fun! Too bad we won't have the chat room!

Shandeh
12-31-2009, 12:57 PM
Hi Nathalie! I'm actually glad to not have to deal with chatting. It was hard for me to knit, type, and keep my thoughts in order at the same time with the chat room. This way, I'll be able to watch television, eat, drink, type, knit, and enjoy myself more. Ha! :teehee:

I don't know why I feel pressured to constantly type in a chatroom, but that's the way it goes. I feel more relaxed in a regular discussion forum.

Sounds like fun! I'll be at church when the event starts, but will try to remember to log on when I get back. Will be CO Cozy (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTcozy.html) for a woman at church with stage 4 breast cancer and for the 10 Shawls in 2010 (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/10-shawls-in-2010)group on Ravelry. Get to co in less than 5 hours, since it starts based on Oslo time zone.

Hi! I just joined today after I saw the Live News Feed on Facebook, regarding this event. :woot:

I am just teaching myself to knit (started about 2 weeks ago) and am working on a scarf from a kit that my DH got me for Christmas. I have been crocheting, also self taught, for a little over a year. I haven't done any "fancy" projects with crocheting. Mostly hats for chemo patients. I think I'm really liking the knitting though!

I look forward to joining in tonight!

how fun!!! We are going to a friend's house... but the kids range in age from my 2yo to a friend's 9yo (and about any age inbetween) , so who knows how long we will last there before it gets ugly! 9 overtired children could be bad you know! :roflhard: I'm in the CST, so hopefully I'll be able to pop in before the party ends! :)
I am crocheting a couple of the Lion Brand cotton bunny blankets for a few babies due soon so I'm not getting into any knitting until those are done. I should be able to finish one tonight if I make it home in time to catch the party here. :) :yay:

Similar to the pattern shown. I'm using Fisherman's Wool (not very practical for a newlywed, I know). It's a cream color, which I felt would show up the cable work better.

I'm on the last tree section, and then I have to make the border.

I'm doing the scarf pattern from my LionBrand Learn to Knit Kit (Christmas present from DH  ). I finished the hat last night. I was so pleased with it.

I'm almost done with the first leg, with the garter stitch. Then it goes into the stockinette stitch. I've practiced purl but putting it into play on a real pattern has me a bit nervous.

I did a dish cloth the other night, in garter stitch. Perhaps I should do another one but use stockinette to get some practice in. Ohhh, the options.

It is also a Blue moon tonight!!

A Blue Moon occurs when we have two Full Moons in the same month. It is the second of these two Full Moons. On December 31st, we will experience such an event. This New Year's Eve is indeed a “Once in a Blue Moon” opportunity to focus on our resolutions, not just for the year 2010 but also for the rest of our lives. According to ancient astrologers, all rituals will be more powerful than usual. This is the ideal time to write down all of your hopes, dreams and wishes.

This Full Moon is also significant because it is a Partial Lunar Eclipse. This Full Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse occurs on December 31, 2009 at 10 degrees in the sign of Cancer at 11:13 am Pacific / 12:13 PM Mountain / 1:13 pm Central / 2:13 pm Eastern Time. It is the first of two eclipses. There will be a Solar Eclipse in two weeks, on Januray 14th, 2010. This two-week period, between the two eclipses, is a very powerful time of manifestation. Be sure to consciously focus your mind, imagination and emotions on what you do want to experience. Remember not to give your energy to that which you wish to be free of. This Full Moon Eclipse is an ideal time to focus on forgiveness and come to terms with past hurts. Take responsibility for any unresolved, repressed, fear-based emotions as they are exposed to you. If you are experiencing negative emotions during this day or about four days before and after this date, be sure to feel, express and release them to Spirit. The tendency of most people is to look outside of themselves and blame others for their pain. Only when we take responsibility for our own creations can we heal ourselves and evolve spiritually.

I have the back of my sweater done and I'm working on the right front. I'm getting a little nervous about putting all of the pieces together when it's time to seam things up. The only way I know to keep up with rows is to use a row counter. I don't trust myself to keep up with them in my head.

Maybe it's the knitting needles? Sometimes, I have to use different needles with different yarns, to see which ones work better together.

LOL!

the minions aren't bad, they'll be out relatively soon (or when dh gets home from work...) the good thing is that they're older and pretty self-sufficient so I'm not needed as much as i was when they were little (course when they were little, they'd be in bed by now! LOL!)

on the socks, not beginning, ending :) I'll be turning both heels this hour and then finishing them off... which will officially complete my knitting for our tribe's yule gathering on the 17th... so then it's onto a shawl (the Freya shawl i found on ravelry... using caron simply soft shadows in soft merino) :)

Some people might call it something else :teehee: I just really want this first garment to be a success so that I have the confidence to knit more garments.

Actually, I think that is the way that ArtLady recommends doing it. I also count rows on the body and sleeves of sweaters to make sure all matches well. Also, you may want to block before seaming for the best chances of success!

The only way I know to keep up with rows is to use a row counter. I don't trust myself to keep up with them in my head.

You may be right. I might have to get off my bum and go dig mine out! (smile)

Thanks for the great advice. I will plan on blocking before I seam. I'm also glad that I'm not the only one that counts rows. I keep a little note pad and pen right beside me and make my tally marks.

We have some left over sparklers from the 4th. Do we dare let our DD's do them?

I have started on my rows of knits and purls (K1, P1?). I've managed to get through two rows of purl. It isn't as smooth as my knit (I've practiced knit more) so my tension may be awkward. We'll see.........

Well, I WAS watching football before being called out by my children to play a game of Pictionary Man. Upon going back to my bedroom to knit and resume watching the football game, my son took over my tv to play xbox and is currently chatting it up with his cousin...headphone is on his head, so i'm only hearing his side of the conversation...

"Oh cool, he stuck me."

something by my nephew

"Oh wow, he stuck me with something on the side of my head."

Wonder what the score of the game is. :teehee:

on the socks, not beginning, ending :) I'll be turning both heels this hour and then finishing them off... which will officially complete my knitting for our tribe's yule gathering on the 17th... so then it's onto a shawl (the Freya shawl i found on ravelry... using caron simply soft shadows in soft merino) :)
Excellent! Finish those socks, my friend! :cheering:

You may be right. I might have to get off my bum and go dig mine out! (smile)
Or....you could just use whatever you have around you to count the rows.

A piece of paper: tear into little pieces, the same number as the rows you're knitting. Move them from one pile to the other as you knit each row.

Coins: same thing - put out a pile of coins, the same number as the number of rows you're working. Move them to another pile as you knit each row.

You get the idea.....

Hello. I'm going to join the party. I'm knitting a ribbed cap, watching the New Year's parties on television with my cat, Delilah. I went outside to look at the moon, but it's pretty overcast here (in Central Florida). The moon finally did peak through some of the clouds and it was so clear and full and bright.

2009 was a difficult year, so I'm looking forward to 2010.

Now, if it's stockinette...it will be knit one row, purl the next row. Then repeat those rows over and over.

K1, P1 will be for ribbing or seed stitch. Good luck!

By the way, here are a couple free online Knitting Stitch Dictionaries that might help you as you're learning:
Library of Knitting Stitches (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches.htm)
Knitting Pattern Central Stitches (http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/stitches.php)

the other thing that works well for counters are those large glass drops that you can pick up at WM int he craft section. we used to use them in our aquarium (before the snail killed the other fish...) and now use them as counters for a card game called Munchkin (it's a parody of Dungeons and Dragons). they make excellent counters too, hard to lose and just large enough that a baby CAN'T fit it in their mouth if they get ahold of one :)

I forgot to say WHAT I'm working on LOL -- a present for my daughter who got married this month! It is the willow block from Jan Eaton's 200 crochet blocks, and it is in Cascade 220 superwash.

We still have the "family" afghan I crocheted when I first got married, so DD wanted one of her own. I didn't get it finished for Xmas, so now am trying to work on it like a fiend and not start any other knitting projects. My sewing room is "full" -- definitely will be the year of the stash and knitting out of books/already "in hand" patterns ... have sooo much already.

I know that has to feel good. For 4 years we lived off my measly paycheck. Out of that came the house payment, truck payment(paid off now) insurance for both and hubby's truck plus all the bills. It seemed there was a whole lotta month left at the end of the money. DH just started drawing his retirement and social security 2 months ago. Mittens and socks are great to knit. They knit up pretty quickly if you use a thicker yarn. Last Christmas I knitted DH a pair of very warm socks(first pair ever, in fact first ever knitted project) using Wool Ease and size 7 dpns. Happy New Year everyone. It is officially 2010. And someone has ruined the evening at 12:00 am by not showing up. Ughh. I just finished a drop stitch scarf, now I'm heading to Ravelry to find a pattern to learn how to do something other than scarves.

Is this the place to request an entry to a drawing or is it the right time?
Welcome to the party, curlykit!

Ok, who is next here on the time zone/midnight coming up :)? I still have 2+ hours to go ...

drinking sparkling soda with some sort of flavoring ... not bad! Or rather I have to tell myself it doesn't quite taste like bubblegum. It is pomegranate and something else ...

35 mintues to go for central time zone.

Cometosilver is the BEST .... I use her site over and over again when I need to cast on with two circulars or magic loop -- it was the one of the few sites that I could find that would "work" for me in the instructions department. Of course once you do that cast on a few times you wonder how it could be so "difficult," but you do feel "all thumbs" the first time.

Mittens and socks are great to knit. They knit up pretty quickly if you use a thicker yarn. Last Christmas I knitted DH a pair of very warm socks(first pair ever, in fact first ever knitted project) using Wool Ease and size 7 dpns. He loved them as they kept his feet toasty during the 13 days/nights we were without power courtesy of the ice storm. Cometosilver has a great sock tutorial.

Is it normal for the sides of the fabric to curl with this stitch? The first 10 inches of this scarf was the garter stitch. No curling. Now I am working 10 inches of stockinette and I notice that the sides are curling. Perhaps its my tension?

I think the Wii is the best "video game" console created. The other game systems promote couch potatoes, the Wii promotes movement and exercise. Making it fun and part of the game causes people to stick with it. You will be surprised to see how much weight you move around to better places even if you don't change your dietary habits.

Yeah....stockinette does that. Some people will knit TWO scarves, then seam them together back to back, to keep the edges from curling.

I have the names on little folded slips of paper in a little plastic container. I also have the prizes on folded slips of paper in another container. I'm shaking the container, and having my hubby draw out one slip from each one.

Our next drawing will take place in 24 minutes!

I'm ringing in the New Year at home with my husband this year. While i'm waiting for the oven to heat for a snack I thought I'd pop in and see what was going on here. I was quite delighted to find this thread. Shandeh, please add me to your list. And thank you for doing this. I hope you all are having a wonderful New Year evening.

I'd like to go in the drawing too! Just registered on here after getting a note on Facebook. I've been knitting a placemat all evening - taking a break from the baby booties I got stuck on yesterday. Keep trying to register on the Bernat site so I can see if there's any help with the pattern, but can't get it to work. Anyway, am starting to see a pattern on my placemat, which is a cool 1st.:yay:

The videos on this site were instrumental in my advancement as a knitter. When I first learned how to knit socks, I watched the kitchener stitch video over and over and over.

congrats on getting to the end part of your afghan!

PS can someone guide me on how to reply to a message so the top part is "posted" and it doesn't keep looking like I'm replying to "air" -- I'm new to this forum (but not to using the Knitting Help site!)

If you want to include a "quote" of what someone else has said, and reply to that, just click the "QUOTE" button on their post. If you want to include several quotes, click "QUOTE+" on each post you want to reply to. Is that what you are asking about?

I use to crochet back in high school, however I've been under some stress so I pulled out my hook and made two hats. Right from youtube it was fun. Then today I ran out to Walmart and both a set of needles 1 thing of yarn in hopes I can try the knit thing again. I am not the best and lord knows I am not fast but it looks right to me. I will post pictures in my morning.

is Knitty Gritty still "on" or is it defunct? I know you can get some back patterns online, or you used to be able to....

I'm pretty sure it was canceled a while back. There was a movement to keep it on, but I don't think it was successful.
