i want to knit this blanket:

but i want to knit the squares seperately - i have seen LOTS of heart dishcloths, but they seem to big for this project. i think smaller squares/dishclothes would look nicer but i dont have nor can i find a smaller square heart pattern.
im terribly sorry if im confusing - i just know what i want but have a hard time explaining.
any help would be awesome!!
oh ya...and what type of yarn would you use??

Cast on less sts, keep the center the same number of stitches, but less sts and rows around it. You could use smaller needles and thinner yarn but the same number of stitches and they will be smaller.

Any acrylic weight yarn will be good, baby/fingering yarn is thinner so that may work for you.
