I was making a center-pull ball of Paton's Wool when I found several defects in the yarn. Is there a particular word that is used to describe when the yarn puffs up this way?

I use a lot of Patton's Wool and have never seen that ... it must have missed a beat in the spinning process. If the area is not very long, you can cut it out and felt your ends back together. Otherwise, I would exchange it .

I also use a lot of Patons classic wool and have occasionally encountered a little bit of a puffy place but never this bad. I just keep knitting and they look fine.

That looks exactly like what I encountered in the Moda Dea yarn I ordered. Too bad I can't exchange it or I would.
