Ski hat with ear flaps DISASTER

Help...I am in the decrease part of a ski hat for my son and I just realized that this looks big enough to wear as a mini skirt ( well, almost anyway).! He is coming home this week, and I will try it on him, but I can't believe this is right. I did the number of stitches called for, but it is so huge. Is there a way to safely shrink this if it is, in fact, too big? I am so sad about this! Sally

Did you check your gauge before you started?

If it's 100% wool, you could felt it.. that'll shrink it up! ;)

Silver's right. The pattern should tell you how many stitches per inch you're supposed to have to get the size called for. If you have too few stitches per inch, your hat will be too big.
