Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to the forum. Can you please help me demystify the ridged feather stitch? The instructions that I got are:

Row 1: purl
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: Knit 1, *(purl 2 together) 2 times, *(yarn over, knit 1) 3 times, yarn over, (purl 2 together) 2 times; repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, knit 1.

I'm confused about row 4. By purling 2 together, isn't my piece going to decrease in size? I'm suppose to do this pattern for 9 inches as the skirt of a girl's dress but it's shrinking rapidly...

Please help a clueless newbie. Thank you.

The YOs offset the decreases so you end up with the same number of sts. If you count them up, there's 4 decs and 4 YOs. A YO is just a wrap around the needle and doesn't include using a k stitch.

I am using this stitch for a babys dress pattern , perhaps the same one

I am confused where it tells me to repeat from the * until one stitch remains .. does this mean repeat from the first * or the second * on the pattern row ?

You repeat what is between the asterisks.

I suspect asterisk #2 is a typo. If you repeat the sts between asterisk #1 and #3. the skirt will stay the same width because as Sue mentioned the purl 2 together and yo’s balance each other out. Does that make sense with the picture and the rest of the pattern?
(
On the other hand, ignoring asterisk #1 and repeating between # 2 and 3 gives you an asymmetry and the number of sts will increase with each row 4)

The pattern is similar to a feather and fan pattern so you don't ignore the first *, but do the 2nd one. It should read -

Knit 1, *(purl 2 together) 2 times, (yarn over, knit 1) 3 times, yarn over, (purl 2 together) 2 times; repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, knit 1. And you would work it as:

k1, p2tog, p2tog, yo k yo k yo k yo p2tog, p2tog

then repeat everything except the first k1, and you end the row with k1.
