View Full Version : yarn I don't want or like....

Someone gave me a gift of yarn and asked that I make her something from a small portion of the yarn. I did and she was quite pleased. There were several lots of the yarn and some were moth/worm eaten and had to be thrown away, some I used for her project and well I just don't want the other portion. It is old and does not have a nice hand at all. I have tried multiple times over the last couple of years to knit various things with it and I just don't like anything about it.
So the question is : Do I offer it back knowing she has no use for it (she had it stored in a closet for at least 15yrs), offer it to another knitter, or circular file it ?

I would tell her that you don't need it and offer it back to her. If she doesn't want it toss it. Normally I wouldn't throw yarn away, I'd donate it, but yarn that is buggy. Blech.

Doesn't sound like she really wanted it either. Donate to a woman's shelter or something who appreciate anything to teach others to knit.

If she had it stored away for that long before finally finding someone to gift it to, I would say that she doesn't want/need it back. If anything, you might risk offending her by telling her that you don't want her gift (this depends on the person ... you know your friend best).
My understanding is that you've thrown away the yarn that was truly ruined by moths, etc. and that the yarn you have left is usable but not of a type you care to knit with. If this is the case, then I would simply donate it to a person/organization you think might be able to use it ... maybe then at least someone will benefit from it rather than just throwing it away?

Good point about having thrown away the stuff that was bad already. I didn't think of that. I'd say donate it then.

If this is 100% wool maybe it would be great for felted clogs, etc.
