My own pattern

Alright so I have been knitting almost a year now and I have decided to try to make up some of my own patterns. I am currently working on a hat, the pattern itself looks great. I'm having trouble figuring out how many to decrease in each round and how to space the decreases out and how many rounds should be between each decrease round. Can anyone please help me? It would be much appreciated!

Most hat patterns dec about 8 sts evenly spaced, every other round, but then the decs switch to every round when you get down to about 3 sts between decs. It doesn't have to be 8 some do well with with 7 or 9 or 10, it depends what your stitch multiple is - if a hat has 90 sts, then you start the first round at k8, k2tog which would give you 9 decs. A stitch number of 72 could be either k7, k2tog, or k6, k2tog for the first dec round.
