ok i would describe myself as an experienced knitter but i am struggling with the pattern given with the sole when it gets to the gusset. here is my trouble the pattern says
"with RS facing, pu 9 (11,11) sts along inside edge of heel flap (1 st is already on needle)- 10 (12,12) sts. K2 from holder,pm, work in rib pattern across 22 (24,24) sts (from holder), pm, k last 2 sts from holder. Turn, CO 10 (12, 12) for opposite gusset -46 (52,52) sts."

ok my problem is when it says "turn, CO 10 (12,12) where am i turning? am i adding the stitches from the side? i made it once with it just casting on flat and it didnt turn out AT ALL!!! so where am i adding these stitches? please help!

Turn means turn like at the end of the row. CO the sts there with the knit or cable cast on.

It sounds like the 10 sts cast on correspond to the 9 sts that you picked up (plus 1 on the needle) at the beginning. Is there a part later in the directions where it tells you to attach these cast on sts to the side of the heel flap? I was expecting directions to pick up the 10 sts but there must be a reason the pattern is telling you to cast on. Follow Suzee's directions and see if this area attaches later.

I am having the same problem as the original poster. I've knit many many socks in the round before. It seems that this pattern is getting you to knit the slipper flat, and to sew up the seam when you're done. Also, (and I could be wrong) it seems like since you're adding the leather sole, you're making these slippers without bottoms? I could be wrong, but the seam stitching is only for the cuff, heel, and gusset, and not the foot of the sock. I have spent an entire week now trying to figure out the next part of this pattern, and I'm so lost - and SO frustrated with having to keep ripping stitches out to try something else. Here's the rest of the pattern (I'm using different numbers of stitches due to different sized yarn, but the instructions are the same):

BEGIN HEEL
Knit across 17 (19, 19) sts. Place rem sts on holder for instep.
Work heel flap in St st for 2 (3, 3) inches; end with purl row. Bind off next row (knit row) tightly. Place last st on right ndl.

GUSSET AND INSTEP
With RS facing, pu 8 (9, 9) sts along inside edge of heel flap(1st st is already on needle)- 9 (10, 10) sts. Knit 2 sts from holder, pm, work in est ribbing pattern across 13 (15, 15) sts (from holder), pm, knit last 2 sts from holder. Turn. CO 9 (10, 10) sts for other gusset. 35 (39, 39) sts.

SHAPE GUSSETS
Row 1(WS): sl1, P to marker, rib to next marker, p to end.Row 2 (RS): sl1, K across gusset sts to 2sts before marker, k2tog, rib to next marker, (sl1, k1, psso), knit to end.(2 sts dec'd)Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until 6 sts remain in each gusset section- Total 25 (29, 29) sts.Rep Row 1 (WS) one time.

WORK INSTEP
Row 1 (RS): sl1,(p1,k1,p1,k1,p1),slip marker, k to next marker, *p1, k1* repeat from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): sl1, rib to marker, purl to next marker, rib to end.
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 for 7 (7 , 8) inches from beginning of gusset shaping. End with WS row.

SHAPE TOE
Row 1(RS): sl1, rib to marker, (sl1, k1, psso) 2 times, knit to 4 sts before marker, k2tog twice, rib to end. 21 (25, 25) sts remain. (4 sts dec'd)

Row 2(WS): sl1, rib to marker, purl to next marker, rib to end.
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 1 (2, 2) times. Remove markers on last WS row - 17sts.
Next RS row: sl1, rib 3 sts, (sl1, k1, psso) twice, k1, k2tog twice, rib to end - 13sts.
Next WS row: sl1, work as est in pattern.
Next RS row: (sl1, k1, psso) 3 times , k1, k2tog 3 times. (7sts)
BO all sts in purl.

FINISHING
Sew side seam of cuff, heel and gusset. Center heel on back seam of slipper bottom and center toe on front of slipper. Pin evenly around (safety pins or split ring markers work well). Use Whip Stitch to sew slipper to sole.

So I've knit the heel flap, so I have what looks like a rectangle (the open cuff) with the small heel flap rectangle attached to one half of it. I can't for the life of me figure out picking up and working on the gussets. I can pick up the stitches on one side, and rib across the 'inseam' (where the stitches remained on one needle, at the very beginning of 'beginning the heel'.) But then I'm left at the end of the row... and the other side of the heel flap is on the other side of the row, so I can't figure out how to connect it unless I join the edges and start knitting in the round.

Anyone have this figured out? I've searched a zillion websites, and youtube, and found nothing. :(

You have bound off the heel flap with one st left on your needle. pick up the sts along the side of the heel flap rows. You should then be up to the sts that are on a holder for the instep. Work across those sts in rib pattern (placing the markers where indicated). Move the needle with the sts on it to your left hand and cast on 9sts for the second gusset. I know they will be flying out there in the breeze but that's what the pattern wants. Later you'll connect them to the other side of the heel flap by seaming along the side of the heel flap. You're right that these don't appear to have soles so they're knitted back and forth over the instep rather than in the round.

THANK YOU. I had done everything you up till "Move the needle with the sts on it to your left hand and cast on 9 sts for the second gusset." The explanation of switching needles, and that there's supposed to just be a random newly-cast-on flap hanging off the heel flap and NOT attached to the other gusset side is what made this all make sense. I kept seeing the "Cast On" directions, and I assumed it was just poorly written instructions and they meant "Pick Up the stitches on the other side of the heel..." because I couldn't figure out why I'd just cast on a whole new set not connected to anything.

I'm going to try this tonight, and I'm crossing my fingers I'll finally get it to work.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Wish I had just asked this a week ago instead of trying to find the answer somewhere else!
