I downloaded a Sirdar (from the UK) pattern today and it says "using thumb method cast on 48". Does that mean long tail? Thanks in advance. The pattern is for a baby shrug.

I found the answer .... it's a slower version of the long tail.

Here's a video that shows you how to do it. It's listed after the long tail cast on.

Actually, it's only slow if you're not used to it. I've been doing it that way for 45 years and it's very fast, faster than the regular LT.

I may have to give it a try Suzeeq ... I wonder if it will give a nice consistent tension right from the get go. After doing alot of long tail cast ons, my hand can ache.

I find a very even tension with it. I began doing it that way on my own when I failed to get the regular one right but noticed that if I 'knit' the needle and slipped the loop over it, it came out the same. I now know how to do a one handed LT, but I have to constantly readjust the yarn on both the thumb and finger yarns so it's very slow and uneven for me. Two handed LT is great!

Yes they're basically the same, it's a 2 handed LT where you 'knit' the cast on sts to needle and slip the thumb loop off them.
