Substituting a different yarn....??

I would like to use a different brand of yarn for a baby blanket that I found online. The yarn it recommends (Alchemy Temple) is expensive and not easily available in all the colors. What should I look for in finding a replacement? The weight and yards? The fiber (wool)?
I know with a blanket it won't be critical, but want to find a good substitute.

What needle and stitch gauge does the pattern say? You want to use a yarn that will match that.
