View Full Version : FO: Hush-A-Bye Baby Shawl

A lady in Australia asked me if I could replicate a shawl for her. It was a family heirloom knit by her great grandmother who passed away 20 years ago. She had taken the shawl to the dry cleaners in preparation for the impending birth of her baby and the 1st photo is what she got back.
She was fortunate enough to find the original pattern (folded sheets torn from a 1945 magazine) and I was able to replace her ruined shawl.

That's wonderful! It turned out beautifully! :inlove: How atrocious they ruined the other one. I think I would probably still be standing there yelling at them!!!

That blanket is absolutely gorgeous! I bet this woman is going to be so thrilled! Thanks for sharing the story with us. And kudos to you for coming to her rescue.
Note to self: Do NOT take valuable items to be dry cleaned!

No definitely should not have been taken to the dry cleaners. It should be hand washed especially if it's a precious heirloom.
Oh! That is so pretty! And what a wonderful thing to do. Hooray for you!!
:cheering: :yay: :happydance:

That is so fantastic!! So neat that you were able to do this for the lady. I'm sure she will be thrilled to have such a nice replacement since her original is ruined. How fortunate that she had the pattern for you.

What a gorgeous blanket! You really really really did a wonderful job!
Note to self: never take handknits to a dry cleaner!
I've read that the chemicals are very damaging to handknits, but what they did to that family heirloom is a tragedy! Worst case scenario!
It's sooooo nice that you were able to re-create their family heirloom!!!

I'd have been furious with that dry cleaner ruining a family heirloom. She's lucky to have had you!!! You must be her hero for life!

How absolutely beautiful your replacement came out!
As for the ruination created by the dry cleaner, there are no words to express my sadness at the loss of an heirloom like that.
But how marvelous that you were able to contribute to their tradition of hand-knitted love to pass down through the generations!
