Hello! I have just retaught myself how to knit using this site. For practice, I knitted a long strip. I think this is called garter stitch? Next, I tried to do the same thing, only purl. However, when I try to purl a strip, it comes out looking like my knitting, only stretchier. Is this right? Thanks!

If you purl every single row, then yes ... I think it would come out looking like garter stitch. I suspect that it's stretches more than your knitted piece because you're knit tension and purl tension are different from each other.

In order to get your knit and purl stitches to look different, you have to combine them in the same piece of work ... like stockinette stitch for example. Stockinette stitch is alternating knit and purl rows ... knit all odd rows and purl all even rows.

Happy knitting!
