For yarn that knits up to 5.5 sts =1" with size 5-6 size needles, how much yardage for a nice sized scarf? Anyone have an idea? This is always a tough one for me whenever I find beautiful yarns & may not have a pattern in mind but don't want to miss out on some great yarn...so there I am...I know this happens to others so any tips on what works for you?? :??

There's a little online resource for that here (http://www.fiber2yarn.com/catalog.php?category=Knitter)

For scarves in particular, you can look here (http://www.fiber2yarn.com/catalog.php?item=1613&catid=Knitter&ret=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fiber2yarn.com%2Fcatalog.php% 3Fpage%3D1%26category%3DKnitter)

They appear to recommend about 700 yards for an adult scarf that is 8"x54". If you prefer thinner or shorter scarves, you can reduce the yardage accordingly.

I picked up a great booklet at my local yarn store -- it's put out by Interweave Press and it's called "The Knitter's Guide to Yarn Requirements." It has charts to figure out approximate yarn requirements for TONS of different projects: mittens, gloves, socks, hats, scarves, and sweaters -- at multiple sizes and multiple gauges. It's heavy card stock and folds down to about 8.5" x 4", so not too bulky to keep in your knitting bag or purse. Very handy! :D
